    Breakers 2 St. Louis 0
Goals by Kelly Smith and Kristine Lilly

Well after a disconcerting 1st half the Breakers stepped up their play significantly in the 2nd half taking the attack to St Louis. Kelly Smith and Alex Scott had especially strong matches. This all in spite of a frightful performance by the referee who didn't seem to have a firm grasp on her responsibilities in this match.
But none the less it was a fine win viewed by a great crowd and the rain did stop prior to kickoff which was very nice.

Just back from the game, and agree with the above assessment. Much stronger match from Scott, and the rest of the backline for that matter.

Little cohesiveness on the attack in the first half, I still don't know how to describe the formation, or apparent lack of one, but they looked better in the second half with more flank play and much surer play out of the back. Luckenbill was right on, whatever timing or rustiness issues from game 1 were not on display tonight.

And a win is always sweet.

And kudos to the staff and volunteers, I thought everything went very smoothly, it didn't feel like the opening night for a new organization at a new venue.

And the ribs were awesome :) Now if they would just sell something to appeal to us beer snobs, we're rockin'!

So STL was noticeably better during the first half? Da*n, that makes it even more of an exact repeat of our home opener.... X-P

No, the Breakers were noticably worse in the first:)

The first half was less than attractive soccer by either side, Boston got it together and actually played some real attractive soccer for long stretches of the second half.

That Karri Hanks was your most dangerous player out there.

It was a fun experience and while the soccer was horrid at times, they really moved well to create the two goals.

Once this team gets some chemistry going and the weather warms up, I could see some much better crowds. 4,900 given the weather is not bad at all, I wonder if Marta will change anything next game?

I second the motion on the beer choices: Bud, Michelob, or Corona---yuck! I do also agree with the praise of the staff; they did a great job and the whole experience was excellent.

I also was impressed with Alex Scott and now understand why they wanted to have her on the team. I don't get Kasey Moore, though. She had a few good plays, but mostly passed the ball to either nobody or worse one of the Athletica. Tony must see something in her, so I guess we'll give her time. It was fun sitting behind him and listening to him give the business to the assistant referee and the fourth official.

The announcer sounded familiar; did he used to do the Revs matches?

Weren't there any local Boston tv stations there to film highlights?? After all it wasn your home opener. Isn't there any way to view highlights from the game?

Wbz and Nesn were both there but unfortunately the Breakers got squeezed out of the sports segments. Boston U. won the NCAA frozen 4 tonite in OT. The Red Sox snapped a 9 game losing streak to Anahiem, and the Bruins playoff preview all took the air time away from the Breakers.

So what do they do with the footage?? You guys have an extended Sunday night sports show on some stations, right? That would be a good chance where they could show the footage.

Kelly Smith said that she and her teammates saw game footage of the Athletica/Red Stars season opener. So obviously WPS must have a feed or someone is recording it for them.

WPS should be at least putting those highlights of the games on their site and it is really shortsighted of them not to. They should want the fans to be exposed to their teams as much as possible to grow and maintain the league.

In case this comes out in an STL paper, the alleged comment that Hope heard about her dad (total hearsay at this point) DID NOT originate from the Dock or by a member of Riptide. However, everything that she says she heard during the run of play DID come from us and I still say Scurry woulda saved that! :p

Thank you everyone for coming out in the cold and slop to our first game. From what I hear - I didn't see one second of the match - it was a great game and the crowd was spirited. My wife was at the field level and said the Dock was nice and loud down there.

Thank you for bearing with us on the muddy parking and learning your way around the stadium for the first time. You will see much more when the sun is out.

To hit a few quick answers - the p.a. announcer is Rob Hancock who is a (one-year) WUSA Breakers alum.

There IS a selection of additional beers at the Cactus Club stand - Tecate, Corona, Corona Light, Negra Especial.

Off to bed. Thanks for your support.

Scurry was awful again on the goal that the Red Stars scored. Shot from a bad angle and should have been reachable.

How would you know there was an "alleged" comment made?

Well, we can't wait to get Luckenbill in Saint Louis.;)

No idea exactly what was said as I was not the one that saw her talking on her cell near the team bus. And Def. no idea who said it because from what I heard, it was at the complete other end of the stadium from where we were. I only mentioned it to distance Riptide from it. That's level that we wouldn't sink to. There's low-class and then there's soul-less. But like I said, we haven't a clue as to what was said or in what context. I do know that Hope was very upset with the supporters section because she's never had to answer to away fans before that spoke English and knew about the World Cup incident. And that's the way we like it.

Well until it makes it to print, it is simply something one of our supporters heard Hope mentioning on her cell as she boarded the team bus. Oh btw, the Scurry comment had nothing to do with the Freedom and everything to do with pissing Hope off. Good luck getting to Luckenbill, her last name isnt as conducive to chanting as Solo, Scurry or Barnhart.

So your supporter's section's chanting upset Solo or was it something in particular one or two individuals said that pissed Solo off?

You know what it probably was? I'll bet she heard the beginning of a "Who's your father referee..." chant that never quite got going. I knew she had lost her father, but I just now read the part about how she never really knew his real identity due to possible military/FBI/government secrecy. If she thought it was directed at her, and not the ref for making (or not making) a call, then that might explain why she was extra pissed at us.

And I agree, something like that directed at her and her father should be off limits. The Scurry stuff though, that's all fair game!

Mostly everything directed at her was soccer/star wars related. There was a few that was about her hair, throwing her teammates under the bus and one that called her a bitch. Besides that, nothing was said about her personal life.

Anyway, steering this thread back to its original purpose, I'm glad the girls got 3 points at home and a shutout. What's even better is that both goals were scored by the Dock and Smith came running over to celebrate in front of us. Huge props to all the Breakers who came over to thank us. Classy girls.

Well most of us were far too waterlogged to risk touching a camera. Four hour tailgate kinda made us soaked in spite of the canopies, but we will have pictures from Breakers Net at some point. When the twitter updates said the rain stopped right before kickoff, they really meant it.

As for Hope, the goals weren't her fault. But we weren't going to tell her that her defense collapsed, she knew that.

I gotta admit that Solo is the perfect name for a chant being a short 2 syllable name with a vowel at the end of each syllable.

SOOOOOO-LOOOOOOO!! Is that how the chant went? LOL

But Hope wouldn't let that faze her for a second since she has heard it all before.

By the end of the match she was at midfield and it wasnt a Sooooo-loooo chant. We treated her like an MLS keeper and that's how we'll roll all season.
