US hostage fails in escape bid from Somali pirates (AP)

[IMG]AP - An American skipper held hostage by pirates tried to swim to freedom Friday but was recaptured seconds later when the bandits opened fire within view of a U.S. destroyer.

This Captain did the right thing. He had to figure when he jumped off the boat 4 snipers would kill the 4 guys left on the boat.

What is going on here? What kind of coward president do we have in office? Carter is starting to look better and better as compared to gutless wonder Obama.

The orders he should have gave the men on the ship. See your chance to execute the pirates and save the captain do it. Him diving off the boat was the Do It moment.

But, what did we do? Nothing.

No our coward president is waste. The buck stops with the president.

Our boat was only 200 yards from their boat. That was an easy shot, but they didn't take it. Why?

Our jerk off president can't make a decision on his own he needs help. That's a leader?

Because you don't go shooting 127 mm shells at something like that, and if you do anything less than that they will shoot the guy that people besides you are trying to save.
It's a hostage situation, the same as happens to police all the time. Let the officers on the scene handle it the way it is supposed to be handled. The last thing that needs to be done is have the President micromanage something he has no experience with.

The answer is to give letters of marque to optometrists with P-51s.

OR...We could negotiate for the countries who drift netted all the fish out of their waters to pay them.

You are confused. Much like Bush was confused.

Making life and death decisions ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE is not always brave. In fact, it's usually not brave.

It's making life and death decisions about yourself that reveals bravery.

So long as Obama continues to understand that distinction we'll be alright.

I mean, really, it's just ********ing amazing. There REALLY IS a significant element to right wing thinking that buys 100% into the notion of vicarious bravery. I mean, Richie here doesn't even hesitate for a second. He's totally on board...bravery is about making decisions about OTHER PEOPLE.

And that's leaving aside the inanity of thinking Obama is making tactical level decisions like whether we should have blown up the pirate ship when the Captain hit the water.

Barack Obama is a panzy. John McCain would have swam to the boat, rescued the captain, and killed the pirates with his bare hands.

So you really think that Obama is making the decision on what to do here? Or are you just trolling?

In case it is the former not the latter, then you have shown a complete lack of knowledge and understanding of how the situation or any other situation like this is handled.

As for the shot, you think 200 yards is an easy shot? Sure on a controlled range it is. Anyone who has taken BRM can make that shot with iron sights. But on a ship with it pitching, and yawing and basically moving in all directions? Not quite so easy. Plus the other boat is moving as well in different directions. Now lets add in that no one on the US Naval vessel knew the Cap. was going to jump in the water and the pirates themselves opened fire and also entered the water. So tell me, how easy is this shot again?

    Yeah thought so.

And then would have gone into Somalia and destroyed all the pirate bases by himself. Before noon.

Hopefully the Capt will make it out alive. Then someone will ask him about his decision to jump off that boat. It will be very interesting in hearing what he will answer.

It might be an answer you guys don't really want to hear.

What happens if the pirates go to that boat with one of theres that works, and take the captain and the rest of them on to that boat. What will we do then? No, that could never happen in a million years could it?

Maybe we should just hold up the conservative mantra and ask the guy to do it all himself instead of asking for help from the government? You know, because the government can't do anything right.

What will you think of him if he gives an answer you don't want to hear? That he's just some stupid liberal who let himself get captured by some wild Somali pirates?

We have snipers who can hit moving targets at a mile away. So tell me we can't hit these guys from 200 yards away?

At least with Bush we got a real type-A man figure, flight suit on an aircraft carrier, mission accomplished sign, pride in president, and the whole patriotism thing for two terms... played well with the troops and perpetuated the heroic figure. Now we have nothing. Absolutely nothing... I haven't heard of anyone proud of anything Obama has done; most are embarrassed... some extremely so. Now we have our first American held hostage - held hostage by pirates and the White House has their collective thumb up their ass! Yet another Peanut Carter while an American's life is threatened and held hostage! So sad...

Instead of a brave rescue this Easter we all Americans pray for Capt. Richard Phillips of Underhill, VT since, in absence of leadership from the White House, that is all we can do...

What's wrong with me is I read this thread. I thought the "smartest, err uh president" thread was going to be difficult to top. I guess I was wrong.

I think the captain might concede that there are a few situations in which being self sufficient can be overrated and government assistance may indeed be welcome.

Yes, from a stationary position. You watch too many hollywood movies and don't grasp the difficulty of making the shots you are talking about. Perhaps Lee Harvey Oswald could pull off this shot.

Now what snipers do we have on board? You seem to think every Naval ship has them. Not only that, but you completely miss the facts that I mentioned before. When you can factor those into the very obvious limited capacity that you have, then come back and talk to me.

Let me ask you this, have you ever qualified with any weapon? I qualified expert with a .45, shotgun, and M-16A2. And I know I wouldn't have a prayer of hitting all those targets, hell hitting one would be asking quite a bit.

You also have failed to address how this is Obama's fault. He isn't making the decision here. The commanders on the seen are. You seem to think that the POTUS micromanages everything and that simply isn't the case.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say next, it should be quite amusing.
