Singing of American anthem by visiting Canadians

anyone can sing it. just be respectful.

 

I don't knwo about any protocol regarding singing the anthem of another country. I certainly can't see how there would be any problem with it, as the above poster states, if done with respect.

Since I do not know the words to most other anthems (a few lines in O Canada) I just stand. I think that would be sufficient.

 

Not really. Last summer I went to the Fire-TFC game at Toyota Park and the TFC fans sang the Star Spangled Banner and the Fire fans didn't. They seemed genuine, so why not?

 

As long as they do not make a mockery of it it is fine by me.

 

This issue probably has went back and forth for sometime. At first, this was only an issue with national teams participation. Prehaps players gear up for participation to National Team duties. Then the hosting nation did not have to play opposition anthem, if it was not decided on prior to a certain timeframe. Like a roster submition. Now with more big buisness ties both national athems are played. Even though certain nations ties with teams. The league takes presidence and not individuals. For the most part, this holds true. And fans don't have to sing nor do they disrespect in doing so. In fact, many fans can carry on conversations as long as no violent tendiacies occur. Like fights or trajectile imposition. Thus if both anthems are being played. That usually means countries are in good standings with each other...

 

I find it disrespectful when people change the last word of the anthem. People change 'home of the brave' into 'home of the yankee's or duke' or anything else to me is offensive.

 

Bit funny really. It was written during a war with Canada.

 

In the NHL it is tradition that whenever a team from both countries is playing that both the SSB and O Canada are sung. When DCU play TFC many people sang both. It's a thing of mutual respect for one another.

 

When in a foreign port (Colombia for example) and the rendering of colors was played, our ship rendered the same hand salute out of diplomacy and respect. Even in Jacksonville, a vessel from Ecuador was moored up. The base played their national anthem and we saluted also, then came the Star-Spangled.

 

I sing both anthems every time I'm at a sporting event when both are played.

 

Just as long as you don't boo the opposing anthem, and you stand, I think you're good.

the "O" in "oh say does that star spangled banner..." originated from orioles games and has since filtered into redskins and VT games, and nationals fans, oh its hilarious, they're nationals fans, but sing the "O" total hypocrisy, but its great, its just great

 

Canadians always sing the Star spangled banner at hockey games, at least in my experience. They do it respectfully.

I sometimes sing their anthem whenever a US based team plays a Canadian team, just out of mutual respect.

 

I guess if you don't know the Canadian anthem, you probably shouldn't try to sing it right? I know the Oh Canada part and then I'm lost. Pretty sad since I have been to BMO away twice. I just give it silent respect, think that's the right thing to do.

Anyways, why would you want to sing another countries anthem unless you're a duel citizen? I saw on U-Sector's boards it's trying to one up the away fans. Kind of dumb if it's, "we'll teach them by singing their anthem louder then they can?" Don't get the rationale behind that. And, the Crew fans sing it loud and proud anyways.

But, it's not going to bother me either way. I won't hear you guys from where I'm standing anyways. So, do whatever.

 

I was once engaged to a Montreal woman. She never sung Oh Canada much enough for me to learn it, for many obvious reasons

 

I don't think anyone here is saying that they would be offended if you choose to sing it(respectfully of course). I think most people are saying you aren't obligated to sing it at all. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being upset about a Canuck signing the SSB. I would much prefer that to the idiot teenagers who are talking on their cell phones or otherwise being all-around a-holes during their country's anthem.

 

I think as long as you're not trying to do what this first poster says you're fine.

I have no problem with it. Just will make our anthem sound louder and we sing louder then anyone anyways when it comes to our anthem in the Nordecke. Also, really I could careless what TFC fans do to my anthem. I'm not going to be appreciative if a few sing or pissed if a few boo. Because I think most Crew fans have other things to worry about and we will dwarf the few TFC fans that decide to sing or decide to boo.

Just do what makes you happy. Why should we care either way? It will be sung if you decide not to and if you do sing then I'm sure we will welcome your respectful voice.

 

Montreal fans usually stand and clap politely at the end, but don't sing it. Hell, for soccer many Montreal fans don't even sing O Canada!

 

That's probably because they'd rather sing O Quebecois (if it existed, of course)

Last year, we sang O Canada both times when Canadian teams came here (Toronto Lynx/Thunder Bay), and will probably do so again this time around (Toronto/London). The fans that made the trip from Thunder Bay were singing it with us, and they had no problem with it whatsoever. We are planning a trip for the return legs this year, though. Not sure how we're going to handle that probably until we get there.

 

well there was that one yank-chap in KC with the tatoos that said "Shut-up Fu¢kin Canadian...why don't you jump back in your vehicle and get back to your own state", but I think most Americans are not going to mind if we sing their national anthem without mocking it.

 

When TFC first came to Foxboro, the travelling group from U-Sector (or was it RPB?) and the Riders got together after the game ended and sang "O Canada" and then SSB. Even got some of the other spectators involved. So I have no problem if somebody sings another country's anthem, as long as they're not trying to make a mockery of it (although the Americans who sing the anthem before games do a pretty good job of that by themselves... it's not an audition for American Idol; please just sing the damn song properly).
