You still have doubts? 19 1/2 years old, been playing in AC Milan for 14 months and scored 23 goals in the serie A alone (no penalties) while starting from the bench from sept-december 2008. Ronaldo at the same age was wowing the world scoring almost a goal a match, but in PSV. No offence to the dutch, but playing in the Eredivisie means a lot less pressure is on you than when you're hailed as the saviour of one of the most important clubs in the world. Also, scoring in the Serie A is a lot harder (by this I don't mean it's the better league, btw). I'm not dissing Ronaldo either, to me he was the greatest striker since Van Basten, and one of the 5 greatest attacking players in football history, with a career cut short by bad luck and a poor physique. Had he not had that convulsive attack before the France 98 finals, had he stayed fit during those crucial Inter Milan years, maybe we'd be comparing him to Maradona and Pele today. I definitely do. Pato is a different kind of player. Already he relies less on tricks and inventive dribbling. He is just as fast but he is more concise, more clinical and somehow "colder". He rarely amazes with unconventional moves (à la Robinho or Ronaldinho) but he has the ability to score in any way he pleases: free kicks, Inzaghi-like tap-ins, long distance shots, you name it. The thing with Pato is, you just can't put your finger on what makes him so good. What it ultimately boils down to is that he is gifted with that mix of talent and pure luck that all the greats had. It's like everything he touches turns to gold. Sometimes you see he's got the ball, and he looks up and you can tell he doesn't really know what to do. So what does he do? He says "******** it" and shoots. Goal!
no doubt pato is very talented......its his cool finishing that is starting to stand out but in terms of comparing to ronaldo.......r9 at almost the same age was playing for barca (he joined them in 1996) and was instantly player of the year for that year.....also during that time eredivisie was a very competitive league....teams like ajax and psv were one of the best in europe. now about pato.....maybe in 2 years we will start to see pato as the number 1 striker in the world, and the number 9 for brazil. At this point he just has to improve his decisions making (like the many occasions where he dribbles several players but hesitates to either pass or shoot).
Exactly. He started playing for Barça in Sept. 1996, i.e. at age 20. At Pato's current age he was still (doing well) at PSV. It being competitive...sure, I wasn't questioning that. I was simply saying that Serie A has historically been the hardest league to score in. I think the English Premier League is better than the Serie A nowadays, and it's producing the stronger CL teams by far, but it's still far more difficult to score in Italy, because of an increasingly tactical approach to matches which unfortunately diminuishes spaces in the field, entertainment value and number of goals. Agree.
