The Romanovs had barely any Russian blood, they were mostly of German/Danish stock. They didn't even speak Russian as a first language. We have to remember that Russia isn't special in this case, many European nations were rules by foreign monarchies.

Not tsars, though, knyazes. Only the first three or four tsars were of Ryurikid blood.

And they were such a mix that how anyone could say what their ethnicity was is beyond me. Starting in 11th century, most Great Princes of Rus had foreign wives.

Indeed, your wife told a lot about your place in the world. That some of the Kievan Princes had French, Byzantine and German wives, indicates the Rus' relative power and prestige at the time.

I've had this debate before many times, but for about a 1000 years until the French Revolution, hardly anyone would have identified themselves with a nation, rather with their socioeconomic standing. Therefore, it hardly mattered that Kievan Prince would marry a French princess. As long as she was of the aristocracy.

Or they would choose a marriage of convenience. Thus, Vladimir Monomakh, perhaps the third most important Great Prince of Rus was married to a "Polovchanka", from the Federation of nomadic Cuman tribes, polovtsi.

So, in essence, the progenitor of all Moscovian princes, Yuri Dolgoruki, has as much Varyag blood as Cuman.

Are you trying to decipher Sheva's origins? Good luck.

Some outlets are calling it an own goal while others are giving the brace to Shava.

I'm not an expert, but I think Arshavin should be credited for that one.

Just saw the goal, typical Arshavin burst into the box from the left with a nice finish. The Arsenal fans think the goal was was awesome but those of us who've been following AA for a while now come to expect it.

I think Voronin should stay with Hertha permanently. He's never played this well before.

That's 8 goals in 6 matches for Voronin. Why can't he play well for the UNT? I mean he scored, what, 6 goals in about 60 UNT matches?

The way he play v. Serbia made me think he'd have a hard time making it into the team, now that he's scoring like this he's giving Mykkailychenko a real headache. I just don't see how Sheva can be in the first 11 in Wembley. Its got to be Voronin and Milevsky, but Voronin just doesn't look the same for Ukraine, they partnered together v. Belarus and had 1 or 2 good combos together but nothing else. I hope Voronin and his teammates can figure out how to use him, cause I really think him and Milevsky could be a good pairing given enough time.

I agree that Sheva can not be in our starting 11 in England. Voronin must be it. Because, while Voronin - Milevsky does not sound inspiring, Milevsky - Seleznyov (or Milevsky - Homenyuk) sounds downright depressing.

Oh! I know! Milevsky - Kravets! There's the ticket!!!

Re: FSU Players Abroad (Arshavin, Sheva, Pavlyuchenko, etc)

The crazy thing is Sheva really has done nothing to get a call up. But he needs to be there in camp and during the game to help his teammates, you simply can't drop a player like Sheva that will kill the teams morale. I think Kravets has done enough to warrant a call up over Gomenyuk. Depends if we plan on taking 4 or 5 strikers...
