Big base salary raises for Simms ($58K to $150K), Doe ($33K to $80K), Quaranta ($33K to $70K), Burch ($33K to $60K), McTavish ($33K to $50K). Namoff just went from $95K to $100K - no wonder he took a while to agree to terms. In looking at all of them, Simms and Doe's increases were the biggest surprises (not that they got raises - just the level of increases. It is a huge raise for Simms - in Doe's case, I am not sure that he deserves a bigger raise than Quaranta got). We now know why DCU's salary cap is a big more tight than expected - the list excludes Jakovic, N'Silu, Kocic, Peters, Platter, Barklage and Mediate (if he makes the team).

2009 MLS Player Salaries: March 2, 2009: By Club
    2009 2009 Guaranteed
Club Last Name First Name Pos Base Salary Compensation

    DC Burch Marc D, $ 60,000.00, $ 62,500.00

    DC Carreiro Fred M, $ 225,000.00, $ 257,000.00

    DC Crayton Louis GK, $ 171,000.00, $ 178,857.14

    DC Doe Francis F, $ 80,000.00 $ 80,000.00

    DC Emilio Luciano F, $ 720,000.00, $ 758,857.14

    DC Gomez Christian M, $ 385,000.00, $ 430,000.00

    DC Jacobson Andrew M, $ 34,000.00, $ 34,000.00

    DC Janicki Greg D, $ 34,000.00, $ 34,000.00

    DC Khumalo Thabiso F, $ 34,650.00, $ 34,650.00

    DC McTavish Devon D, $ 50,000.00, $ 52,500.00

    DC Miller Ryan M $ 20,100.00 $ 20,100.00

    DC Moreno Jaime F, $ 250,000.00, $ 250,000.00

    DC Namoff Bryan D, $ 100,000.00, $ 105,000.00

    DC Olsen Ben M, $ 225,000.00, $ 225,000.00

    DC Peralta Gonzalo D, $ 210,000.00, $ 229,000.00

    DC Pontius Chris F $, 36,000.00, $ 66,000.00

    DC Quaranta Santino M, $ 70,000.00, $ 72,500.00

    DC Simms Clyde M, $ 150,000.00, $ 156,000.00

    DC Wallace Rodney D, $ 55,000.00, $ 88,000.00

In terms of base salary for senior roster players (assuming Emilio is just the DP cap hit of $400K, Perlata's loan gets his salary off the books [not sure if/how it works that way] and Gomez is on DCU's books for just $200K - Barklage, Kocic, Wallace and Miller $ do not hit the cap), the total salary $ is $2.120M. You can probably add another $250K for the following salaries and the total is $2.370M

Jakovic - $80K (hardest salary to peg - can't see it more than $100K)
    Platter - $50K
    N'Silu - $40K
    Peters - $34K
Medciate - $34K (if he sticks)

Cap was supposedly $2.3M in 2008 - gross it up for 3% cost of living and you get $2.370M so DCU would be at or very near the cap if my numbers are reasonably close, but it does not factor in any You Suck or any other allocation $ may have been used to buy down salary cap hits.

    Doe gets $80K
He had better do well or he's gone by transfer window time

We dropped more than $800k during the offseason and didn't add near that much in new player salary. I suspect that we have some cap space to play with but won't make any major moves until the June 15th transfer window.

Maybe they are planning to use Doe as a starter. I have a hard time seeing a player making 80k coming off the bench. Maybe he and Jaime split halfs during the game.

Simms must have a good agent (although Ricardo Clark at $250K explains how MLS views good young DMs) - I would have thought that Namoff was due for a better raise (not just going from $100K to $105K) given the raises for other players.

I guessed on the salary bumps for various players during the offseason and was surprised to see MacTavish, Burch, and Namoff were all dead on. Simms was the real shocker, but he now makes what is around the league average for that position. He's also got the benefit of his iron-man status, as he was pretty much irreplaceable in our line-up.

The only real surprise (to me anyway) is that Fred makes some serious coin for such a low offensive output. He needs to have a monster season to come close to justifying what he's getting paid.

He's on loan. Technically, he's still ours (we have his rights in MLS), but officially, he's not (since his contract is with MLS, not DC, and we said good riddance). Once his loan expires, I would suspect the hole thing is swept off the books.

That's the best I can come up with.

What's really confusing is the fact that a player loaned to a USL club still counts as part of your roster, even though he's playing for another team.

ok, I didn't emphasize, so I apologize. I wanted a SMART person who knows what he's talking about to explain it.

I didn't need some yahoo who accidentally found the internet to reply.

Again, I apologize for not being clear.

    :D

Jason - I'm just kidding. thanks!

There's no way Simms, much as I like him, should be making 50% more than Namoff. I think it's an injustice, and I hope Bryan doesn't let it eat away at him. And Fred gets paid an awful lot for what he does, which is look great up until he has to put the ball in the net. Luciano, you'd better contend for the Golden Boot at that salary!

And Doe shouldn't make more than Santino.

So it's just an error by the Players' Union. Go figure.

In two seasons, he's done exactly that. What more do you want from him?

Just scanning the list, Stuart Holden at $34,500 jumps out at me. He outplays guys making several times his pay. I would love to have him here.

Well, first, I wish he weren't so streaky. Second, I wish he had a better all around game, i.e., could create his own chances. And that's why I think that he has to be pumping them in regularly to justify his pay. If his goal production drops off, what else does he give you? Angel gives you more, but costs twice as much, so I guess that's fair. Twellman gets his goals, costs less than half as much, and has a more rounded game IMO. Cooper costs only 30% of Luci....and so it goes.

Not to pick on this guys quote, per se. But this is the problem with these snippets about the salary cap. They're just a snapshot of this year. Who's to say if Namoff signed a lifetime deal for 100K for the next 15 years, or Simms signed for two years at 150K per because he felt he could either cash in on a transfer fee next year, or live large and hope to sign another MLS deal in two years? Maybe Quaranta signed a deal for a relatively low salary, but with the contingent that he gets final say on any transfer deal above 1 million for example, so he's not stuck in MLS if Rangers come calling. Maybe Doe's deal includes his loan money too, who knows? Fred no doubt is being overpaid for last year, but then again he's making similar coin to Bennie based on his 2007 season which is his contribution after signng the deal. It's all crazy talk until players take the field. I susupect Jakovic will cost a very pretty penny this year along the lines of 150K and a 200K transfer (since I seriously doubt sharp Euro teams like Red Star dump a talent for pittance, and if they did we've been fleeced anyway), none of which he will be worth this year. But next year, when he's defender of the year, it's a smart deal.

Bottom line is that MLS is not really transparent even though they are trying to be transparent. I would think you should know that by now! :)

As for Luciano, he will count 415K as our sole designated player in case anyone was curious.

It's simple to look at these salaries and compare them in a one-year vacuum, but it's not realistic. It's easy to say Doe doesn't deserve more than Quaranta, which is probably true, but it doesn't account for the length of the contract, the incentives, other terms, ages and stages of their careers, and also the intangible likelihood of the player either being wanted elsewhere, or wanting to be elsewhere in the future.

I'm glad Crayton and Luci got that .14 added to their salaries. Good agenting right there. They can each buy a share of CitiBank now.

I think you've got it fundamentally right. However, the team on the receiving end of the loan may or may not be paying his full salary: normally, I'd doubt it. And even if they are, technically they are paying DCUnited, not Peralta; so one would suspect the league has some sort of complicated rule about this kind of situation, which isn't a factor in any other soccer league I know of.
I also assume the loan-ee has an option to buy, which hopefully they'll excercise, so the whole mess can be over and done with.

    Completely agree.

I've said it time and time again, using DP money on him to light a fire under his butt last season was a BIG mistake.

IMO he should still be at his last salary of 300k, which IMO is about at where hes worth. Maybe a little less actually.

I wish we could get a all around striker instead of him, IMO i wish we cut him loose last summer to rumored morelia transfer, and invested in a more angel like striker.

The shocker* for me was how much Wallace is making. Is he one of those GA guys who don't ount against the cap?

    *No, not THAT shocker!!!

Could be that the list is not 100% up to date. There are some players signed from other teams not on it, and I thought all veterans got a standard 5% increase regardless of a new deal.

    Yes, he's GA.

Though my guess is the update thing, fwiw, Simms is younger and plays a position that's considered more important in MLS (a league where generally most teams attack up the middle).

Extra uncertainties with Tino? Other than that I got nothing.

This makes no sense, at all.

You think a guy who's already bagged 20 goals in an MLS season is worth $300k, but Angel is worth all his DP money?

The standard raise only applies to players making below a certain amount. There's also a raise based on years in the league, but that may be contingent on the duration of a contract (i.e. more guaranteed years at a lower salary versus fewer years at a high salary with no contract guarantee).

Its not even goals compared to angel and what he brings to the table, IMO all emilio can do is finish, he cant dribble, his passing is no good, his speed is not great, his heading has gone down in quality since arriving here.... Last season he disappeared after somehow winning it for us vs. Chicago. Hes Streaky, thats the truth, and IMO his worth isnt 300k let alone 700k+!

Thats just me though. I wish we cashed in on him back when he had outside interest, we could have gotten a better all around forward to replace aging moreno, and possibly someone to work up top with Doe.

If Doe is our future at forward, we're screwed. He's all speed and no finishing. I'm putting my money on Pontius or N'Silu to carry the load this year.
