Why the hate against Beckham and not against Donovan?

This has been bothering me for a while and I wanted to air this out and see what people said. I see a lot of "Beckham is a dick" type posts around the situation with ACM. At the same time I hear almost nothing about Donovan or if I do it is more of a "Good for him" type message. What I don't get is that when Donovan went to Munich he made it pretty clear he wanted to leave the Galaxy and was using the loan as a try out. Why then does LD seem to get a free pass while we crucify Beckham? I just don't get it...:confused:

Maybe it's because Donovan is coming back for 2009, already was the best player we had for the previous four years (2005-2008), and he won us a championship. Or maybe it's because "Beckham is a dick".

Donovan is a player in his prime who is taking his shot at a European league. That is the normal course of events for a talented American soccer player. While doing so, he has spoken respectfully of the league and team that pay his salary.

Beckham decided that, since he is near the end of his career, he would cash in with MLS. He has one of the most lucrative deals in the game. He has made tens of millions of dollars per year while here (a tiny bit of it from me), then decided he didn't want to do it any more, so he whined in the papers and badmouthed his employer. He could have acted like a man, reached in his pocket and pulled out $10 to $15 million (a portion of what he made from MLS last year) and bought out his contract. But he'd rather whine.

I don't care as much as some people on here. I don't like him as a G because I think he's a swell guy; I like what he can do for the team on the field, and for the league in this country. But I will call him on being a whiny bitch. I expect him to back for next season and I will support him like I did before, because he plays for my team.

Landon has given us an MLS cup. We all knew he wanted to play in Germany when he came here. So when we heard, or when I heard that he was going to Bayern I was excited for him. It's no surprise he said he wants to stay there because we've known for a while. We've given him the chance. Good for him. Now come back home and gives us another cup.

Beckham came to LA to help our team and make MLS known around the world. He spoke like he meant it and went behind our backs and pulled this stunt.

Landon: A player who has brought us happiness and we knew he wanted to play in Germany since the beginning without putting down the team. OK!

Becky: Came with a smile, gave us nothing, and stabbed us in the back. NOT OK!

OK, so maybe my problem is that I am a Galaxy convert. I hated the team prior to the last year and started going because a friend generously invited my wife and I to go. It was a downhill slide from there and by the end of the season I was rooting for them. (can't believe this is what it came to ;)) This means I don't have that history to draw on and what I saw in 2008 was a Donovan who was up and down with his play (from fantastic to meh...) and talked about leaving almost as soon as the season ended. With just that as a background I couldn't understand why people weren't calling for his head.

Are you F---ing kidding me. You don't know why we are giving Beckham so much crap. DONOVAN has played his balls out for the GALAXY, and played to his fullest potential. David Beckham in the other hand has given only HALF ASS efforts. Donovan is getting payed $900k per year, and BECKHAM is payed 5M+ per year plus atleat 10m+ per year in other crap. Beckham means MILLIONS of dollars to the galaxy. Donovans TALENT sadly to say does not turn into dollars for our team. Donovan never promised to try to give soccer a better Image here in AMERICA, and stay here atleast 3 years.

B/c a lot of people on here are not only Galaxy fans but US National team fans as well, and that takes us back to the old club vs country arguement. Most would be okay with it weakening the Galaxy, so long as Donovan is "more" prepared for the next world cup.

I say, if they leave, screw them both
(PS: Pando won us that cup!!)

David, you're a hero for taking up with the Galaxy last year, of all years. Hopefully there are better times ahead. Although, if pressed I will admit there were times last year when the team was pretty entertaining. :)

As for Landon, we have some forum participants who don't agree, but he is ours. He belongs to MLS, to the USMNT and to the Galaxy. Besides the history & titles others have mentioned, he has been our best player & leading scorer, laboring on a bad team for several years now. He has been honestly saying since the end of 2007 or so that he wanted to try Europe again. Then in 2008 he went & put up a 20-goal season. He had a chance at Bayern & honestly said he'd like to transfer there. What's to dislike about that?

Beckham's situation is different. He's been practically begging for our scorn ever since he announced he wants out. It's only been getting worse lately, and his public comments have cut all existing cords, which weren't all that strong to begin with. His history as a Galaxy player was too short & too fraught with problems.

    David,
Hey that's a great explanation and a very reasonable one. Sorry that we both had to endure the results of 2008 - although it was entertaining at times.

LD has proven to be class on and off the field - Galaxy humanitarian multiple times, leader in pts every year on, and team captain for much of it. I think he's "one of us" and if after 4 years, at the peak of his career, he's interested in trying to move on to bigger and better things, that's only natural. And it's natural as fans that we'd respect that (and perhaps still want him to stay). This is a very different situation from Beckham.

But not because he wants to...because he has no other option currently.

given the choice Donovan would not be coming back, we are obviously not his first desire.

And when the chance comes he will bolt too.

When asked if a move back to California would be a defeat for him, he replied, "No, my wife is there, my dogs are there, and my team for the last four years. Plus many friends. I love the Galaxy. I've always said that I would like to play in Europe. If not now, then maybe next year. My contract expires in the US by 2011. That means after 2010, when the contract is approaching the end, it may be a compromise which makes sense for Galaxy and for me."

yet our arms are open wide, and we wipe a tear for the memory of holding cup....all those years ago.

I am begining to see the truth.....

the rot began when you arrived,

the only person with more blame than you, must be that freak of a friend (I use the term lightly) who began bringing you along.

We'll keep it all secret because nobody here will want to know you used to be a Real Salt Lake fan.....

Well for one thing Donovan kept his mouth shut for the most part, whereas Beckham seemed to use the media to further his aim. I honestly shudder to think what the reaction to him in LA is going to be should he return. Boos don't describe it I think.

Still, maybe the silver lining is Galaxy supporters finally have something to get passionate about.

Well, I didn't say it was by choice - just that it was a reason I wasn't upset with Donovan. It's kind of like this - my wife isn't pissed at me because I might run off with a wealthy supermodel some day. She doesn't have to be, I won't be running off.;)

the point is that Landon has been "sleeping around" in Germany and would rather stay there.

except the supermodel feels she is marrying beneath herself and has changed her mind.

I'd say it was more like Landon's having a cup of coffee with a German girl. I'm not saying he couldn't sleep with her, but between his worth the LA, and Bayern's roster situation, nothing's going to happen.

Becuase LD never claimed to the savior of MLS and American football. Instead he played the game, gave his all, and did his best. His mouth and love for the game was left on the field. Plus at the end of last season he played his heart out rather than looking like he wanted to be on the French coastline sipping some wine with Posh by his side.

Beck's has repeatedly made his feelings known to the media and the world regarding MLS, his desire to leave, and how much of a travesty it would be if he were to return (see the Special1 TV's recent skit about how much David claims to be tortured here). All I know is that it will be Beck's fairewell tour, so feel free to let your feeling's known -- unless you are one of the many soccer mom's drooling everytime he takes the ball on the pitch.

    Man this is disappointing. :(

Because I bet Donovan can walk back into that locker room and know who half of these new players are. I doubt Beckham even keeps up with what is happening with this team. And when he strolls in in July he will know almost no one, and probably still think he should wear the armband.

Donovan can walk back in on March 10th and wear that armband and no one would argue. It's called class and respect.

    I agree with jedimaster.

You couldnt buy a Galaxy jersey without beckham23 on the back for a whole year, you couldnt walk 3 feet at the HDC without seeing the douche's face, and now we have to spend 4 months of offseason wondering and speculating if the face of the team is returning? Its not completly his fault that hes been branded the face of the team, but when you go on saying you wanna stay in Milan and do anything to stay, youre gonna get some angry fans.

The answer to this question is pretty simple, yet not something people want to speak publicly about - namely that the reason people hate Beckham and not Donovan (who truly has no interest in playing for the MLS anymore) is because Beckham is foreign.

Donovan is given the benefit of the doubt because he's American, while Beckham is not.

Beckham wants to play in the Serie A in an effort to prolong his National Team Career. Donovan simply does not want to play in the MLS or for LA Galaxy any longer. Donovan's position on the US National team is a mortal lock; he just doesn't want to be here any longer. However, Donovan isn't as good as Beckham, thus Bayern Munich won't be picking him up.

I do wonder what LA Galaxy's fans are going to say when Donovan starts insisting on a Summer transfer back to Europe (albeit to a lesser team than Bayern, possibly a Fulham or a Deportivo La Coruna)?

Donovan said in an interview in Germany that the Galaxy is in his heart, that it is his club. Show me when Beckham has said that. Donovan has given his all through years of mediocrity on the management level. To argue that he and Beckham have given the same level of service, and therefore deserve the same support from its fans is laughable at best, malicious and bitchy at worst. You seem to have a grudge against either the Galaxy or Donovan... whatever it is try to deal with it before you post again. This foreigner vs. American thing is idiotic.

And I suppose that Donovan gets paid only $900K/year and Beckham get's $50mm is because Beckham is "foreign."

Of please tell me you don't really believe this simple clap trap that you are spouting. It is so wrong on so many levels. I don't suppose you were here to see the welcome LAG fans gave Beckham, about 10 times the attention and "love" shown to him than when Landon arrived. Is that too because Beckham was "foreign"?

After all, LAG fans have never really taken to heart any non-Americans, like, say, Mauricio Cienfuegos. Or do you think he was born in Peoria?

No. Beckham has earned the anger fair and square, by coming in and selling himself as the White Knight that was going to save American soccer, and then turning his back on LAG after they bent over backwards to satisfy his every whim. But, I guess we mere Americans are supposed to take that in stride and give Beckham a pass, because he's "foreign."
