OK - after the long winter break qualifying starts again at the end of March. At home against Brazil and Paraguay, the two teams in the best form right now. I think it's safe to say we have to be in top form and while 6 points is possible, 4 points is good, and anything less than 3 points puts us in serious trouble.

By this point, the ideal starting 11 is pretty much set, so these are the guys that need to step it up over the next few months.

    Cevallos
    Reasco Hurtado Mina
    Sombra

    Castillo Mendez
    Valencia Ayovi

    Guerron/Caicedo Benitez

I think that eventually we need to start seeing Valencia start taking on Mendez' role, since this will be Edison's last WC cycle. This will give Guerron a chance to play his true position which is right wing. I think Bolan~os needs to be given some more time on the left wing. Also, Christian Noboa needs to become a fixture in the team, the little we saw of him the other day, he was fantastic.

Shouldn't Hurtado be phased out before Mendez?

we've been talking about phasing out Hurtado for years and it hasn't happened yet...without him we're clearly a worse off defensive team...with him we're either solid if he's inspired that day, or god awful and more porous than a sponge the other day....who do we put in his spot?

Thats our biggest problem at this point! DEFENCE!!!! DEFENCE!!!!DEFENCE!!!! Without Hurtado our defence is CRAP!

Mendez is great but hes the least of our worries, we have that kid Fidel Martinez coming up.

All we saw from him was a game I believe after that he didn't play again.. I'm more excited about folleco, pinto, rojas a bit, and that defensive midfielder zamorano I think was his name. They look like they can break into the first team in a couple of years if they keep at it.

I think Vizuete's problem is finding a good equation for defence. After watching the England game and past friendlies it is apparent that the Ecuador defence is weak at best. He has clear choices in the midfield and forwards with Valencia, Guerron, Mendez, Benitez, and Caicedo. However, fazing out Hurtado is inevitable and finding the right mix of Ecuadorian backs is a problem. What is going on with Deison Mendez? Is he going to go to Europe and how do you think he will perform? Also, I think Rorys Aragon should get some more caps since Cevallos seems to be inconsistent. I've only seen Aragon play once for Standard Leige and he doesn't seem amazing but he is still young and could be a good choice for years to come.

We finally have a decent set of goalkeepers; banguera, aragon, cevallos when he wants, and that up and coming kid mendoza who has something our goalies usually don't , a shit load of luck lol.. And adding to the midfield I can't believe I'm saying this but eve ayovi has been performing at monterrey...the main problem with our CB's is speed and reaction time, they all seem to trade those two things in for strength, on the wings) and lb) no one has really claimed a spot, maybe mina but de jesus is ehhhhhh alright, reasco has just never been the same and that. Gamez guy is wack...

What is the deal with Jairo Campos? He is fit again after his injury but I haven't heard him being considered for the right back spot, that we need to fill so badly. I only saw him play in the World Club Cup, and besides missing that easy goal against ManU, defensively he played very well.

I think that jairo campos is perfect on defence. he should get called up. Christian Noboa is pretty sick i gotta say i've seen videos of the kid interesting player. he's good at free kicks too. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_AovQCIi_s"]YouTube - Cristian Tello Noboa 2007-2008 Rubin Kazan[/ame] check it out. Defense highly worries me. i would love to try a 3-5-2 formation but our defence is just not that strong. so we would have to settle on 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.
    i would put.
cevallos, campos, hurtado, espinoza, mina. valencia, guerron (pushed to the right past valencia and slightly behind the forward), castillo(or urrutia), mendez, noboa. benitez.
    what do u guys think.

    4-4-2
    Banguera
    Omar deJesus Hurtado Espinoza Mina
    Castillo Mendez (urutia)
    Valencia Ayovi (noboa)
    Guerron Caicedo

i think Vizuete might want to look at Juan Carlos Paredes who plays forward for Dep. Cuenca... did anybody see him play against Boca in Copa Libertadores? ...that kid has jets

Thanks for the video...honestly I knew very little about Noboa except that his team was first place in Russia (a strong league) and that he was a first-team starter. Then I saw how he came on against England U-21 and played a key part in changing that game from 0-2 loss to 3-2 victory. Then it all made sense.

The guy is everything we need right now. An offensive-minded midfielder, who holds and distributes the ball well. And from the video, he looks great at free kicks from the right side, perfect because now we have Ayovi for free kicks from the left. He's also young and hungry. It's a no-brainer. He needs to play.

Yea, I would say from the limited times I have seen him play he reminds me of Damien Manso. And we all know how great it would be if he became a naturalized Ecuadorian. I think Noboa could be another offensive threat due to the inconsistency of Caicedo and Valencia for the NT.

i found that video a couple months back, he really surprised me. I can't wait to see him play Champions hopefully he makes an impression on a SPL team or an English Premier team. I thik he would better suit the spanish league. I think Gerron should play in the English Premier, same for Benitez. I really hope wigan opt on buying him.

I really wish Damien Manso would become naturalized. He is our missing link.
Valencia and Caicedo need to play against Brazil. Instead I would use Noboa instead of Edison Mendez. Though I don't know how that would work out.

I hope you mean "stacked" in a relative sense. We've never really been "stacked". I think right now if anything we're stacked on the wings, and maybe even in the defensive mid spot, but not really in the offensive mid category.

Yea, I agree and even though there is a little depth on the wings we saw how missing two players (Valencia and Hurtado) in the Venezuela game really hurt the team. But on the plus side at least we don't have a huge pool which is what Colombia's problem is. Ecuador still has a relatively young midfield and good forwards but that defence is really going to be a problem in a couple of years if Deison Mendez doesn't turn out and Vizuete doesn't find any depth at fullback. Also, what did happen to Kaviedes? That ponce sure through his career out the door, and hurt some of Ecuador's exports maybe.

Hmmm, Colombia has a huge pool? Why do they suck so much then? Have you been watching football lately? And Kaviedes.....welcome to 2009 are you here???

As for the case of Colombia I think they have a huge pool in comparison to Ecuadorians but nothing near to the amount on Argentina or Brazil. At forwards they have Darwin Quintero, Rodallega, Juan Pablo Angel, Wason Renteria, Radamel Falcao Garcia, Tressor Moreno, Freddy Montero, Dayro Moreno, Victor Montano, and Edixon Perea; all of whom are having relative success in foreign leagues, not to mention the players from the domesitc league that get NT caps from time to time. Also there defence is at least 4 deep in every position. The problem is they won't call up stars like Ivan Cordoba and Angel because apparently they show up and think they are better than everyone else and bring the team down or so I hear. Luckily Ecuador doesn't have that problem (to my knowledge) and the stars on the team (Valencia, Mendez, maybe Caicedo and Benitez play decent team football) If you don't believe me just go to the Colombia forum and look at their Colombians abroad thread or ask them if they have a big pool of players to choose from. As for Kaviedes, sorry I don't know much about what he has done, someone posted on here awhile back he was playing for LDU but that is all I have heard, he still has a little youth and he could salvage a wee comeback maybe? I didn't mean to sound arrogant but I believe Colombia football is big and even though they struggle. Its a mystery. In Dec. 1996 Colombia was ranked 4th in the world by FIFA; they have options.
