I know he's had health issues recently but he belongs here not out West.

    Why aren't we pursuing him?

    Here's my guesses:

    1. $$$
    2. San Jose's place in the allocation order.
    3. United's place in the allocation order.

Yep, mostly allocation order, I bet.

But I think if he wanted to come here, and we wanted him, some kind of deal would have been worked, as usual.

So this tells us either he didn't want us, or we didn't want him.

I'm going to guess it was more a case of us not wanting him, which I think speaks to our FO's goals for player acquisition right now. Apparently they want to strengthen the team in areas other than LB/LM.

I can't say I disagree with that. CB and CM need some attention.

And fwiw, San Jose looks like playing him at ACM (if I were to guess that would be in front of two mids in a 5-man midfield). The one position at which he has the best chance to rebuild himself and become an all-star is the position at which they already have one.

I would think that under those circumstances San Jose would accept a trade for him, if DC wanted to make such a trade, but I'm guessing they don't.

I'm confused by this, too. You'd think that in this economy, Kevin Payne would be more than willing to rent out his basement again.

I'm still a Bobby fan - I saw his work rate and intensity as a young player outshine several revered veterans - Unfortunately his last 1-1/2 yrs at DCU were muddled by a pre-mature departure (complete with ceremony), a rather quiet return, injuries, frequent MNT callups, and more injuries - He's been one of those many players in the CCL/EPL that are good for a while and then get chewed up and spit out by the toils of long hard seasons often at 2 per week

All that said, while Bobby may have the gift of work rate and distribution for an AMid he really can't score to save his life ('course neither could Etch) - If I were any MLS team, I'd keep him at outside Mid or one of the holding Mid pairs in a 3-5-2

We need players that can score goals, right?

I think we could go on and on about whether that's really our biggest need. (After all, we had a solid goal scoring record last year.)

Regardless, a player who didn't score goals, but held the ball up and distributed well (if you think Bobby could do that) would still be able to help this team.

Yeah, Convey doesn't fit the bill of "Guys who can score goals". "Guys who can agonizingly tease fans by missing the goal by inches".....that's a role that Convey can fill.

Bobby always found new ways to miss each time he was near the opposing goal. I hope noone thought I was saying he was a goal scorer or a good fit for United.
Let's try something new and forget the years he was here. :D

Repped for two reasons. One, because of the inside nature of the comment.

    Two, because it's Iron Maiden.

you are aware he's played in England for a few years and scored quite a few very nice goals?

I don't know if I can speak for everyone, but I'll offer that our tempers are much less volatile than our self-esteem, so I bet most will agree with him.

Convey and Etch are two totally different players. Etcheverry finished darn well compared to Convey.

I don't recall Convey doing great in MLS as an Attacking mid. The dude was normal. Given the fact he played decently at a young age seemed somewhat promising, but I've never seen him play more then average in MLS or in England.

Not worth the DP in my opinion.

When he actually took a shot, yes, Marco was a much better finisher than Convey. The trouble with Etch near the end was that he wouldn't take a shot.

Etcheverry really never was that type of player towards the end of his career, he was turning more and more into the setup man, as his effectiveness in his dribbling in the box was going down hill, his vision was his biggest gift and FKs.

Although he did always make the best of it when he was in the box on a dribble, he never was that guy to score crackers from outside the box(at least in His MLS days).

I don't disagree, but it was getting to the point where he would have a tap in with his right foot but he would cut it back to his left, see that the shot had closed down and then pass it back out of the box.

Convey hasn't scored a first-team goal (Reading/ U.S.) in nearly three years, since April 2006.

For all the hype, he's had two good years in his nine years as a pro--2002 in D.C. and 2005-06 at Reading. I'll grant him that 2000 at DC was a learning year and he was 16, but otherwise, that's a lot of suckage for a lot of different reasons.

His career has been completely built on the hype from Bradenton and a good friendly match against Newcastle.
