even tho I dont really think what he said was actually wrong, or that he even attacked MLS (do you think Capello will continue to call up Beckham if he is in MLS? do you think many MLS players are predictable? he even said the league was improving but thats not my point here) what is the point in having a 6 page thread calling Robson an idiot and saying he knows nothing about MLS (even though he actually talked to a guy who is coaching in MLS in the article instead of just ignorantly stating it like others have in the past)... instead of saying he is an idiot and making fun of him being an official member of the British empire or of his old age, why dont we focus that passion on making the MLS better and making Robson look like an idiot by pressuring the league to put together a better product...
Yes, I've done nothing to try and advance MLS's cause because I posted in this thread. Signed, Former MLS season-ticket holder who drives two hours each way to games when he goes, supporter's club member, and someone who has written columns and produced podcasts about soccer in the U.S. I just want the day to come when someone talks about MLS in either glowing or disparaging terms and there isn't a thread about it. Bobby Robson trying to put MLS in its place has about as much effect on the league in general as does a rapper wearing MLS gear on stage. The navel gazing in all directions is just absurd to me.
I didnt say you didnt do anything to help with the league's product... I said this thread does absolutely nothing... but im happy that you have written about the sport is Robson wrong about his comments tho? I went through this thread, and no one has actually criticized the points he made about players being predictable or MLS wont get Beckham to the WC in 2010, but instead criticized the man himself and the word "second rate" as for your second paragarph, you are right... which was the point I made in my last post... its an inferiority complex many of us have when talking about US footy
Does Beckham's play for Milan not make rubbish out of his claims that MLS won't get him to 2010 WC? I mean he's playing quite well in Italy so it's not as though MLS has deteriorated his skills.
no one is saying MLS made Beckham a worse player... I dont think Robson said that... its what Capello has told Becks, which is go back to Europe to play in a more intense environment to be included in the England teams
I take no offense that Sir Bobby refers to MLS as a second rate league, or that he relies on Carver's expertise to support his opinion. However, I'm somewhat surprised after reading several pages of rants and posts in Robson's defence, no one has commented on the title of his column: Beckham must buy into the Real World Perhaps, as RichardL suggests, this is the handiwork of a ghost writer. If that's the case I'd think twice before putting my name to it. First, because I wouldn't want to insult my good friend by insinuating he's not living among us in the real world, and secondly, I'd rather avoid entertaining inquiries from my former good friend's solicitors. It was fun being part of Beckham's MLS fantasy world while it lasted. Best of luck to you in the real world.
Capello's made it very clear that he won't pick players who aren't playing. That poses a huge problem for Beckham given the long length of the MLS off-season, particularly as said off-season coincides with the European season and many European national team games. Thus Beckham is pretty much forced to play in Europe - on loan or permanently - if he wishes to play for England moving forward. I do wonder whether Beckham thought this aspect through before moving to MLS in the first place. Maybe he simply thought his international career was over when McClaren dropped him after WC '06.
that was it... he also thought he could make a lot of cash in the states too, so he said go for it... when McClaren called him back up, thats when all of the stories started about Beckham coming back to Europe...
There are many idiots out there who are misinformed, or let their lack of pride (how dare the USA try to make a stamp in the world game) get in the way of sane judgement. 2nd tier I will agree with. Behind the likes of Denmark, Norway, and Belgium? If so, then by not far at all.
You, along with the rest of us, obviously didnt get the memo that when you get anointed "sir", your word is gospel...
You, along with the rest of us, obviously didnt get the memo that when you get anointed "sir", your word is gospel...
See, there's my issue with the whole thing right there... The British press thinking all this time that he was playing in Salt Lake City...I mean, good grief...
You can't deny that the talent level is pretty bad in MLS compared to Europe. Beckham couldn't score the ENTIRE second half of the MLS season but already has 2 G 2 A in only 5 games! But Beckham isn't THAT good of a player since the truly great players can make players around him better but Beckham was just the opposite in MLS. Lower level players actually dragged Beckham down! LOL! Beckham could get the best of both worlds by coming here after his AC Milan season is over in May.
I am failing to see why you are posting in this thread at all. Why does it matter that Bobby is good friends with Carver. They did coach together at Newcastle did they not? So if you don't really have a point or opinion to make...I'm sure you can find a pointy ball thread to fill up with randomness. And so you get your facts straight. Carver took TFC up 10 points from their first season. So in many peoples eyes he did more then sell beer at BMO.
The professional victims are out in force. An off-hand, unfavourable comment in a quote that wasn't even about MLS, in a newspaper published on a different continent, and we have four pages of fist-shaking. Are people really that sensitive?
I figured MLS was maybe a third-tier league, so second-rate sounds like a compliment. Besides, I don't think you have to be an MLS-hater to acknowledge that yes, playing for against Inter and Juventus is better preparation for making the England starting XI than playing against Colorado Rapids and Kansas City Wizards.
I suppose I should't be surprised that a topic like this can still generate 10+ pages of responses. What an insecure bunch we US fans are.
Bah. A lot of it is just enjoying the chance to prick the Eurosnob, or respond to an alternative line within the thread. What an insecure bunch of US fans-- insecure over their insecurities -- abides here.
