a small point: if you want to put a shot on frame, you aim for the middle of the goal. If you want to score a goal, you go for the corner. Landon was going for a goal, so of course it means that he might not put it " on frame".

In reading the Bayern German message boards - the fans are pleased with landon.

They understand the team was basically shutting down about 5 minutes after he got on; they were very pleased with his energy, his effort and his ideas out there. They are saying they've seen more from LD in his 20 minutes than what Lukas Podolski has shown in quite some time. They're expecting "happy times" from Landon.

Well maybe. Players in competitive matches miss shots all the time.

But I bet that in a competitive game, Ribery would've run for the nice two through balls LD played into space. LD's performance isn't merely the shot, it includes what Donovan was looking to do. Now for all I know, BM aren't happy with that -- perhaps they want him to turn and run at players, which isn't Donovan's forte for some reason -- but from my perspective he tried to do some things his colleagues weren't interested in at 5-0/5-1.

for people who have played soccer: going for the spectacular play at 5-0 makes you look like a shite and is likely to get you a broken leg for good measure.

Don't know if you're referring to this game, but simple give-and-gos were not played by Ribery, who clearly was looking forward to the ride home at that point. Hardly "spectacular", but decent creating that Donovan can do.

Can anyone post the extended highlights that possibly feature the miss? It would be much apprieciated...although, they might not be out there since the scoring was so high...which would limit the chance of a network having time to show half chances...

so what exactly did Lehman get upset about w/Landon? I was watching the stream but didn't really catch it, may not have been watching very close ... but I know it doesn't take much for Lehman to get his panties in a wad, maybe Lando just looked at him the wrong way.

it looked like Landon was stepping between Lehmann and another BM player to cool things off.

No it was LD arguing with Lehmann, I have no idea why except maybe Lehmann thought that at 5-0 LD shouldn't be trying to win the ball off him near the endline and LD wasn't having it, following Lehmann back to his goal...Klose stepped in an turned LD away.

on frame, on frame, on frame, it's easy to type and easy to say

But LD on the run to his right, ball dropped back and slightly going to LD's right, Lehmann shifting across the goal left-to-right, defender closing from LD's left.

No time for two touches, no time for a side-footed shot, you go for the hard shot just inside the right post...down the center Lehman has it, to the left post the defender gets a foot on it. He had one spot to put it, and had to get it there quickly. He missed.

He can be safe, worry about making sure he doesn't miss and the chance of a save or block goes way up (though there's always the chance of a rebound), or he can try the unstoppable shot. Midfielders try to put it on frame, forwards try to score.

    I hate having a job but I guess I shouldn't complain.

Anyway, I was watching as I could while working at the same time, wasn't bugged for a second until of course LD came on, and I missed his first 5 minutes or so and apparently all of the fun.

As someone else asked, any place where his miss and his 'misunderstanding' with Lehman is archived?

Non-baseball people can move on at this point, but I'm reminded of a Whitey Herzog quote about taking it easy when you have a big lead. Basically he said that his team wouldn't steal bases, take the extra base, throw inside, etc., if the opponents would promise not to come from behind. Landon came in and at least wanted to show that he was going to work hard and hustle even if he had some very bad touches (sorry folks its true from that part of the match I did get to watch) and perhaps Lehman didn't give two *&^(s about Donovan's plight, given that he had conceded 5. But I like that LD gave his views, though LD v. Lehman would be a beatdown of scary proportions for my fellow yank...

I just spent the last couple minutes reading the last four pages of posts here... that is all I could stomach quite frankly. I have been accused claiming that YA posters in general are not realistic. Some of those posters have taken the time to get to know some of us and defend YA against such claims, but I have to admit... reading the past few pages, I still stand by my claim.

I think posters like Fraulein 96, Rainer, BruceS, and others have a real perspective as to what the climate of the game was like upon Landon's entering it, others are just simply expecting waaaayyyyyyy to much. This is the exact type of unrealistic expectations we all lumped on him during his last tour of the Bundesliga (I included!).

Look, Landon had entered the game when all else was done. Ribery did not need to play pretty 1-2's or double passes with LD, he had done his share by that point. I cannot believe people are pissed at a truly World Class talent over not sharing more of the ball with a 65th minute substitute!?!! LOL!!! (I am a fanboy of Frank Flopery, so perhaps I am not the one to judge).

Simple matter is that Landon did very well for entering the game at that stage. His impact was immediate as he started the lightening fast counter attack that ultimately ended up on his foot 15 yards from goal. So what if he shanks it wide.... did you see Philip Lahm's attempt not 10 minutes later???!!! Did everyone already forget about Donovan's brilliant volley that simply didn't have enough distance and pace on it?

Furthermore, the most impressive thing about Bayern's display that we have yet to see from them this year is the utter dominant display defensively from the entire team... hell, even Ribery was defending (eissman steps aside as lightening strikes!)... LD came on and never once relented in his energy to pressure the ball. The fact Bayern never let up off the gas (which we have been guilty of all season) was another welcome sign. Unfortunately for Landon, Bayern had inflicted all the damage by the 60th minute.

Trust me, Landon is staying and playing. He is clearly worth his weight at this point. He will see plenty of time, but just don't be unrealistic and think Jürgen will drop his previous 6-months of lineup formations to just insert LD into the front two. He will see his time likely in the 2nd half to start, and potentially progress from there. Expect the 65th minute substitution, rather than thinking he deserves more. He needs to acclimate to the league now, as he has clearly acclimated to the team. It will work itself out.

At this point, judging from his performances thus far, I hope Bayern make him an offer the MLS will be hard pressed to turn down. Keep two things in mind however....
    (a) Bayern are cheap bastards, and (b) MLS will NOT want to lose BOTH Beckham and LD in the same loan periods. So don't expect Bayern to break the bank for LD, and don't be offended by it if he goes for less than you expect. And don't be amazed if the MLS dumps the whole thing (although they owe it to Landon for all his yomans work in the league).

Hmm. I didn't see too much serious, un-realistic posting in this thread. Cheerleading? Yes, of course. Serious posters saying "he should really get a hattrick"? No.

Heck, if anything, it's been the converse. That Bayern is so hallowed, that if Donovan doesn't produce goals in every game, he's history.

Who was pissed? I recall one or two posts saying that Ribery didn't chase a couple of LD through balls, but everyone knew that was to be expected, no? Except LD, who's still playing at close to 100% when his teammates were in second gear.

Doesn't this contradict what you just said? That Ribery had done his share? It was clear Bayern were cruising when LD came on. I think everyone recognizes that. Unfortunate, because it was harder to feature in a team when Donovan is moving at a different speed with, arguably, a different motivation.

I think by the unrealistic posting he meant the sidefootsitteresque dissing of Landon for missing a shot that my dead grandma could have made, etc, and his point is that this is not exactly a game to take much of anything from considering when Landon entered the game. That's all. I thought it was a very reasonable post.

Could be. I couldn't follow from the beginning of the post. It's hard to keep straight "trolls" who "hate" LD and "fanboys" of him.

And Bunga - I know you're going to ask again that we report the posts. The problem isn't the individual posts, which taken individually are just that of a raving fricken lunatic. It's the totality of the many posts. Persistant infringement if you will.

He's a troll and he makes this board damn near impossible to read.

Fair enough, call it what you will. I see your point. We are used to a different type of conversation on our boards... very pessimistic and overly cautious and being called out on facts, etc. I perhaps need to understand and anticipate the climate of this forum upon entering it.

If you spent more time in our forum, you would know this is simple not the case.
If anything we have LD haters who are slowing turning their heads noticing a massive difference in his game and can easily see him extending his stay. Provide me with a post where you saw that, I would love to see it.

This is the type of response that irks the few of us that haven't given up on coming over to YA simply to have a chat. The oversensitivity when one simply points out something constructive simply baffles us. Again, we aren't used to that at FC Bayern forum.

And neither are we all German in there. I would dare say 80% are American based fans who actually are USMNT supporters as well. There is a vested interest in many of us to see LD succeed, but we have no expectations either. It is ultimately a win-win for Landon.

I don't believe I was trying to be contradicatory but rather simply showing that when other perceived Landon to be going at 100% and having different motivation, in fact the team had likely been instructed to simply hold the ball, not rub Stuttgart's noses in it (let's be honest, it could have been a lot worse), and thus Landon likely understood that.

I just think some hear (not all mind you) are simply expecting too much from Landon in his first meaningful match... or perhaps expecting too much from LD's supporting cast in that given situation (time of match, result at that point, tactics of the team at the time, etc).

Thanks for noticing. Like I said I only looked back the last couple pages.

LOL! That I can fully understand. Trust me. It is ridiculous trying to figure it all out. Even on our boards.

I am a fan of LD's who lost a little something for the guy when I travelled to WC06. I will admit having been disappointed in his departure from Bayer04, but it is understandable knowing the mindset of the professional footballer at that age. WC06 was a clusterfock in its own right (thanks BA), but I was not at all pleased with the lack of production from several US players, most notibly LD for me personally. However, I never gave up completely as some of my fellow Bayern forum mates had and knew at some point, he would be ready to venture overseas again. It should be stated that in the past several years I have been very hopefully vocal of a Yank one day wearing the Bayern kit, and when I heard of LD potential loan, I was excited and yet skeptical. I didn't want to mount expectation on him, I just preferred to let his play do the talking as clearly all that he was saying in the media indicated we were going to see a Landon Donovan hungry to prove himself on the European stage. I can't say that so far he has disappointed - quite to the contrary. Furthermore, he has come to Bayern in the best of circumstances... Jürgen as coach, Podolski out the door, and a load of young talent that get along quite well on the field and in the locker room.

    And that's my story...
    :D

Obviously, they need SFS to set them straight...with pearls of wisdom like a goal scoring rate of 1.33 per 90 minutes is not going to last.

Although SFS started this whole ordeal, we've been talking about him for a good 20 or so posts now...it's unhealthy.

I think we all are guilty of derailment.
