Beasley eyes MLS as Rangers departure looms

DaMarcus Beasley could be looking for work soon, and the potential search for employment has him eyeing a return to Major League Soccer.

Rangers is ready to part ways with the U.S. national team winger in January and sources tell SBI that Beasley is looking for a return to MLS, but his asking price might prevent the reunion from happening.

Rangers has been looking for takers for Beasley's services for some time, along with the services of several other players, but has yet to secure a reasonable offer for the former PSV star. If no offers emerge soon, the Glasgow club will release Beasley, which could pave the way for Beasley to make a move back to MLS.

So what is standing in the way of a Beasley return home? The fact that no MLS team is ready to pay the seven-figure salary he is looking for and has grown accustomed to in his five years of playing in Europe's top flight.

There aren't many teams in MLS that couldn't use Beasley's services on the left wing, but his Designated Player-level salary demands are an issue. With MLS teams targeting mainly foreign stars with their designated player slots, Beasley will have a difficult time finding an MLS club with the DP slot to use on him, and the willingness to make him a designated player.

Which clubs would be interested? Bruce Arena and the LA Galaxy would make a perfect fit, but would only make sense financially if David Beckham were to leave LA for AC Milan permanently. Beasley could theoretically be a replacement for Landon Donovan if Donovan were to make a permanent move to Bayern Munich (where he is set to begin a loan move next month) but the Galaxy would be unable to pay Beasley more than a max salary of approximately $415,000 a season (at least not under the current MLS rules).

A return to Chicago, where he began his career and reached an MLS Cup with in 2003, would not seem likely considering Cuauhtemoc Blanco currently fills the club's DP slot and left winger Justin Mapp recently signed a contract extension.

Beasley had been linked to a potential MLS return two years ago, with Real Salt Lake and New York the identified suitors, but that was when John Ellinger was RSL's head coach and Arena was with the Red Bulls. With Ellinger serving as Hyndman's assistant with FC Dallas, you have to wonder whether FC Dallas would be interested and capable of making Beasley an offer he would seriously consider.

A Beasley return to MLS will ultimately come down to whether Beasley is willing to take a substantial pay-cut to come home. If he were, the number of interested MLS teams would multiply.

So why would Beasley be interested in a return to MLS at the age of 26? Injuries and inconsistent playing time have hampered him the past three European seasons, and with 2009 being a busy and important year for the U.S. national team (with World Cup qualifying, Confederations Cup and Gold Cup), Beasley could be better served by spending the next year or two in MLS, which would cut down on his travel requirements as opposed to if he were based in Europe. He would be 28 after the 2010 World Cup and a strong showing in South Africa, as well as in MLS, could pave the way for a return to Europe.

Beasley has struggled to gain a regular place in Rangers' starting lineup this season, failing to even make the bench on a handful of recent occasions. Rangers faces arch-rival Celtic on Saturday.

What do you think about Beasley potentially returning to MLS? Do you want him to come back? Do you think he would be better served staying in Europe? Which MLS team could you see him going to? Think Rangers should keep him?

The only problem he wants DP money, I don't think any MLS team would give him that.

I think if you're going to steal Ives' whole article, you might as well put in the link from the site.

ya you might as well link it haha. but anyways I wish Beasley could come back but we have no room for him. We have Mapp on the one side and then Pappa on the other side. Plus he would want a lot of money and wouldnt we have to go through allocation shit again like how we did with Mcbride.

here is the link to where it talks about Beasley from a few months ago where it says he would jump at the opportunity to come back to play for Chicago when his time with the Rangers was done. So if Chicago would want him back maybe he would take that big pay decrease to come and play for us....We would have to clear some room, but maybe trade one of our wingers or something to get him?!?

A comment in the SBI post mentioned how MLS ought to consider two DP's per team: One American (or Canadian for TFC); and one foreigner. I actually like that idea a lot, and would allow for many MLS teams to bring homegrown talent back stateside (err, North American-side?), thus increasing the value and level of play on the field.

I am a strong proponent of having our best Americans/Canadians play in MLS, although I fully understand why they ought to move to Europe in many cases.

The trouble with Beas and Rangers is that he's never really found his place in the team framework.

I often wonder why Walter Smith signed him. Perhaps he was looking for any pacey player in the Peter Lovenkrands mould.

What you can say for certain is that Europe hasn't been that kind to DaMarcus, or Marcus DaBeasley as about every idiot Scottish commentator calls him.

The question for Fire fans - one that I'd ask - is whether or not he'd fit into a Fire team after years of change. I'm not sure he would.

US internationalist or not, there's something of the busted flush about the guy's game just now and going in search of past glories isn't the way to unbust your flush IMO.

Mapp would make excellent trade bait if Beasley was interested in coming back to Chicago (at a sub DP salary) - but I see it as quite unlikely.

Before an injury with PSV, he hasn't really been the same player. When he played with the Fire, he was actually more of a two way midfielder/winger and it wasn't until he went to PSV where he became more of a forward.

In the Fire's system, he would work because he can play offense and defense and the left back for the Fire, Gonzalo Segares, likes to go forward. However, for what Beasley would be paid, I don't know if it would be worth it. But he is great for quotes.

    Thoughts on salary folks?

He might be willing to dip below 400,000 but I'd actually be willing to dump Blanco and pick him up with the DP.

Move Thorrington to the middle with Pappa (Banner as backup) on the right, and the team would be realllllllllly fast.

    --------------Rolfe-----------

    -Beasley-----Thorrington---Pappa
    ---------------Pause-----------

    Segares--Conde--Soumare--Woolard

Trade Mapp to LA or United

The Fire isn't going to dump Blanco because he sells tickets. The trouble with Beasley is he is slight and injury prone. You can't help the team on the injured list.

And figure out where you're going to get the extra $ 1.5M per year to make that work.

Although I don't think it will or should happen, we could try for a second DP slot. New York has one that they're looking to unload, plus Osorio has stated that he considers Mapp to be among the best players in the league. Mapp plus picks/cash may get that slot.

I think it'd be a mistake to do so, but it's not out of the question.

It would be bad/good which ever way you see it, but if the Fire keeps having problems with Conde, I have a feeling that Conde to New York for the DP would happen.......

But then who do we put in the middle with Soumare?

Or do we move to a 3-5-2?

    -----------McBride-------Nyarko------------

    -----Beasley----------------------Rolfe--------
    ---------------Pause--Thorrington-----------------
    -----Segares-------Soumare------Prideux/Robinson----

I, by no means, like Thor in the middle and Rolfe at the right, but seeing as Dennis is still the coach, HE does like them there......

Blanco is gone after this next season. Give the DP to Beas when he leaves.

I've only seen a handful of Beasley's games over the last couple years. Do you really think he would deserve a DP slot, because I'm not so sure. He certainly wouldn't sell many tickets, and I think we could probably get a better on-the-field contributor.

I bet it would take Mapp plus Conde plus picks/cash to get the DP slot from Osorio and New York. I highly doubt they would let it go for less and, frankly, they should not let it go for less.

If that is what it would take, I think the Fire should do it. We want to get rid of Mapp anyway (so it's not a great loss), Conde has made it clear he wants to leave (so it's not a great loss), if the picks/cash are not too ridiculous, it seems to work.

Of course, no one wants to send two of the Fire's better players to a division rival, but so what? We know about Mapp, and his (in-)effectiveness, so that is not a concern. Conde in New York would be serious; that could be a problem.

Still, with a second DP the Fire could bring in anyone. I am not sure that Beasely is worth a DP slot at this point, though.

 Cabbage crates? Briny? :D Okay, inna da plain spikkin' DaBeas hasn't cut it in Europe. Is it now that he's running home to momma?

I'm of the opinion any MLS club - especially my MLS club - would be out of its mind in paying big time to have him back in the US.

Not that I wouldn't want him back, but I'd expect the Fire to do a lot of homework to find someone just as capable before it paid out to take him back.

I love Beas but at this point, he is getting a bit older and has had some injuries. He was remarkably durable when he was here given his size but we would definitely need to feel comfortable that he can go the majority of the time.

I agree that he shouldn't be the marquee DP. For better or worse, that position needs to sell tickets. I do think he is a good guy to put on the cover of the media guide and I do think he can be used to sell tickets but his effect would be limited in comparison to a guy like Blanco.

Maybe DMB should remain in our pleasant memories. I would like to see more Pappa in the midfield so I think we should make some of the moves discussed to free up space for him, not to bring in additional mids.

This is probably the last realistic shot at a title with Blanco and McBride. We should consolidate around the team we have and then potentially retool and NEED the DP slot this time in 2009/10 for a midfielder or striker.

    Agreed.

And if we trade the rights to Beasley wed better get AT LEAST what we gave up when we got Mcbride.

Not of that give the rights to Will Johnson away for peanuts crap.

I don't think we have the rights to Beasley, for the same reason Toronto rather than Columbus had the rights to McBride.

Yep. I don't recall details but we should have received some allocation slots or cash back in the day when Beas left. That would effectively relinquish any future claims to him.
