Anyone planning on going? Looks like it's to start around 10:00 or so. http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20081224/NEWS/81224006/0/NEWS01
the parade itself is a bit of a snoozer. come later in the day for the end of the parade. Each Mummer team ends the day with a strut down south 2nd street and the crowd and mummers are all on full blast by that time south below washington av. from about 6ish till late
The funds are for the parade itself. The city poo-pooed the usual after parade festivities on 2 Street.
darn, no public funding for the mummers to get hammered. i never quite understood that. get a warehouse or private land somewhere and get trashed there on private funds.
well they already have southwest sponsoring the parade and i just can't see the individual bands leasing out parts of their sequin shirts to companies like Comcast. And from what I understand, the parade brings as much money into the city as the city gives back, if not more. plus, The Matt Blatt Auto Sales Quaker City String Band sounds kinda lame.
then have a couple of title sponsors for the philadelphia comcast/southwestern/tastycake mummers parade sponsored by yuengling. commercialize the crap out of it. if it brings in a lot of money in tax revenue then maybe the city can spend more on something frivolous like building revamping run down areas instead of a party. then again, i never did get the point of the mummers.
not even close. at the ren faire i get to interact with the cast and drink legally. plus it is far more appealing to the geek in me.
yeah but you get to drink illegally at the mummers parade ... all those open containers make for a damn good time.
after being told to dump my cooler because the cop had a bug up his ass i tend to not drink at parades anymore. they only tell you to stop drinking at the ren faire if you get sloppy or belligerent.
I'll be there, but I don't know where I'll be, maybe on Washington Avenue, then move up when the String Bands perform.
I'm not big into the Mummers anymore. Was fine when I was younger, had family in Fralinger and one of the Comics Brigades. Heck, I even grew up around the corner from Two Street (Moyamensing Ave.). Spent many a weekend getting shtty at Mick Daniels at 2nd and Snyder. Don't know why, just lost the fire for it when I got older. I think it was because my birthday is on New Years' Eve, and I'm usually really hungover on New Years' Day. The last thing I want after a night of tanking down is more booze and loud music.
I kinda like the mummers, but when the city has to decide between keeping libraries open or keeping firehouses open, spending taxes on a private after-party isn't my idea of fiscal responsibility.
i'm not sloppy enough. plus i'm belligerent enough to begin with that they can't judge when i've become moreso. attempted rep. that made me laugh
