According to Ives, Damarcus Beasley is going to get released by Rangers in the Jan transfer window and is looking to come back to the states. Will anybody give him DP money though? http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2008/12/rangers-set-to-part-with-beasley.html
This is the same question I had re Cooper: can't a team offer Beas the $400K max PLUS some allocation money (like they did with Scholetto), still not making him a DP but giving him more than the league max? Anyway, I'd love to see Beas back in the states. Ives says the Galaxy would be a good fit, but they do have the well-traveled Lewis already.
As we saw with Schelotto, once the allocation money was gone, they had to have enough to make it work in a DP contract situation.
As I said in other thread. I don't know how an MLS GM could justify DP money for DMB. I like DMB, but not for DP money in MLS. JUst not feasible for what he does/brings.
I think this is a public negotiating ploy by Beasley's agents. Drop a line to a columnist and see if MLS bites. This does put the league under a bit of pressure, however. If he goes to a Danish-Norwegian side for somewhere around $600K-$800K range (free transfer), people will keep asking why MLS couldn't pull the trigger and roughly match the offer ($500K may do the trick there). By making his alleged interest public, Beez also wants to conjure up another bidder in order to make the potentials suitors aware of it. Personally, I think he should be able to get seven figures in Holland, where his speed could contribute significantly to the teams in the UEFA events. But, if someone misses there, Norway or Denmark could also be in play. And, let's not forget the Colaship.
I have always been underwhelmed by Beasley. He has good speed, but his dribbing and crossing in my opinion are suspect. He plays solid d, which is one thing I really area have respect for him. He is too fraile for rougher leagues, he needs to be back in Holland or a similar place. I don't see any team in MLS willing to make a guy with avg stats and limited name appeal, American or not, a DP.
I agree that Holland might be the perfect place for him, especially since they already know his skill and talent set and hot it fits in their league. I disagree he doesn't have name appeal in America. He's one of the most known American players we have. Whether that would translae into butts in the seats is another matter. New England could be the perfect spot for him - they just lost their left mid Khano Smith to Seattle in the expansion draft and he'd fit perfectly in Nicol's preferred 4-4-2 lineup. He might even bring in some extra fans in New England who haven't made a significant signing in quite some time.
Keep in mind being transfered and being released are two totally different things. The article doesnt say anything about Beasley being released. That means there would have to be a transfer fee involved, and MLS is not going to do that. He's not coming unless its on a free, and quite frankly, I don't think the league should take him anyway, considering what his salary demands would be.
Before he went to Rangers - 2005? - he was rumored headed to play for Ellinger at RSL. Perhaps Dallas in then an option?
Yes. Yes. Puts MLS under pressure? Why? Never seems to effect them at all when it comes to transfers. Especially Yanks. Who is gonna pu th epressure on them anyway for half a mill. He is a good part player overseas when healthy and on. He would be pretty much the same thing here. Not sure any GM could spend DP money on a part player. DMB seems like precisely the type of guy who can't fit into MLS. Good enough to contribute overseas and make decent scratch. Not nearly good enough to come here for that same scratch. It is what it is.
Why? As Ives pointed out, the idea would be to go back to MLS get regular PT, rejuvenate his career, play well in South Africa (biggest stage there is), and then like he did before make a move back to Europe at stilly only 28. Or should he just sign with the V-League and join Lee Ngyuen? Or maybe he just wants to be closer to his family? Its a viable career option and has worked for many people, including Beasley. He knows what he is getting into and he knows that MLS can often be the route to a brighter future.
It takes a half year to a year for Yanks when they go abroad to get into the swing of things most of the time. See where he is next year before sending him back.
He's not going to the Colaship. And I don't think that the Danish and Norwegian leagues are going to be able to pay that much for him. The big myth out there is that all European are just throwing money at people. Ok, they can pay your average player maybe triple what MLS can. But when you make $50,000 that is not hard to do. Marshall just turned down Mainz because MLS made a better offer. I doubt he is making more than $300,000. What is Lee Ngyuen making at Randers. Maybe $200,000. Yes the salaries and budgets are bigger, but not that much, and MLS can certainly if they want to, be competitive. Beasley was a big time player on a couple of big time teams. He demanded and deserved a hefty salary, but I doubt that teams in the second level of Europe can meet his wage demands. They may come in above MLS, but they will not be what Beasley wants. The real question is: does anyone in MLS really want him and will they make the move to be competitive salary wise? If so, he will come to MLS.
I wonder where he'd be the best fit. They mentioned the Galaxy but what other times could afford or even need him the most. I could see dallas but thats only if Cooper leaves. I'd say Kansas City or maybe San Jose...although going to those kinds of teams might not generate enough interest for another contract in the future in Europe.
If the money is right. I'm always amazed at how things change because of that...for or against depending the situation. I think MLS might be very good for both parties right now. I just don't see someome paying DP. If you were a GM of an MLS team would you? Remember, DMB is really effective when he makes his runs and has the ball put into positions where he can use it. The longer it's at his feet the worse it gets. In MLS he isn't gonna be on that type of dominant team that controls things and he isn't gonna have the quantity/quality of balls he got overseas. I don't think DMB would be that big of a force in MLS. Good player, but not top notch. I wouldn't DP him. Couldn't justify it. I'll be inetersted to see if he garners interest (he will) but at what price. LA should have taught even the most foolhardy a lot...I would hope. Also, Houston should have to...for other reasons.
At the risk of repeating myself, maybe this is the time for Kraft to open his walletbook for once. They just lost their left mid (Khano Smith to Seattle), his team needs a little upgrade, and he'd fit in perfectly in Nicol's 4-4-2. Still, like most here, I don't believe any team, much less MLSHQ, wants to spend a DP on DaMarcus so I don't know how they could get around that.
I would love to see DaMarcus come back to the U.S. He is worth DP money. He would bring more people to the games for sure.
yup, don't go to kc. we're a blackhole and no one will find, or look for, you here. wait... what do you mean an epl team bought a kc player last year at this time for like $6M?
I know the money doesn't work, but he would be a great fit in DC. We could use a good attacking wing player that can play D. Oh well, I can dream, can't I?
