Argentina just had one. I'm looking at old tables from England and see that in 1971-1972, Derby County won with 58 points and Leeds United, Liverpool, and Manchester City had 57 each.

In 06/07 the Dutch league title was decided on goal difference. It wasn't by a margin of 20 goals or anything, but one. One goal swing in results and he history books are rewritten. Hard to believe it could get closer than that.

Woah. Just remembered. England 1989. Even closer. Both Liverpool and Arsenal had the same goal difference, but Arsenal one the league because they scored more goals. Better yet, they met on the last day of the season (actually weeks afterwards due to Hillsbrough). 2-0 would win the title for Arsenal, 1-0 wouldn't and instead it would go to Liverpool. With 10 seconds left of the match and of the season the title was heading to Liverpool as Arsenal were only winning 1-0. Then with virtually the last kick Michael Thomas scored to make it 2-0 and bring the title to Highbury. Most dramatic moment in football history.

.... sorry, fixed your post... :p

Anyhoo... yeah 1989 was very dramatic with the goal coming in injury time...

German Bundesliga 1991-92... Stuttgart pipped Borussia Dortmund & Eintracht Frankfurt to the Bundesliga title on goal difference... I think it was also in injury time that a succession of goals occured that led to these final standings if someone wants to expand more....

Real Madrid won the league on head-to-head results after both them and Barcelona finished tied on points.
This was, 2 seasons ago under Capello.

French League 97-98 was decided on goal average. Lens and Metz were at 68 points each but +5 goals for the first.

The closest part about that season was the matches the week or two before. Barcelona were playing Espanol at the Nou Camp, while Real were playing a lowly team away. In the 88th minute of later Barcelona were winning and Real Madrid drawing, looking like the title would go to Barca. Then, almost simultaneously, Espanol equalised against Barca and RVN scored the winner for Madrid. That was crazy.

Oh, that reminds me the '99 season. Last day: at the 38' Pirès scores at Nantes and Marseille is champion; while Bordeaux is held by a 2-2 (Wiltord twice) at Paris. And at the 89', Feindouno, a 17 year old player who just entered for his first professional match, scores the 3-2 for Bordeaux who wins the title.

The fans of Marseille still find it hard to swallow, especially as every trophy escapes from their hands since 1993; they have always accused PSG to have given the match to not let them being champions.

Seem to recall the Dutch league of around 89 - 90 being close as well.

Think PSV won it over Ajax by a couple of goals.
Cant remember if it was 89-90 or 90-91.........

    Real Madrid

That was a crazy season. After El Classico, Barcelona was leading by 5 points with 12 games remaining. Real Madrid was 4th behind Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla. No one thought that Real Madrid could catch up with Barcelona.

Week 34(week 38 is the last game)
Real Madrid played against Espanyol on the 5th game from the last game of the season. Real Madrid was losing 3-1 at HT. But Real Madrid made a comeback and won 4-3. Higuian scored the winner on the 89th minute. On the follwing day, Barcelona lost a 89th minute goal against Real Betis that made the game 1-1. Real Madrid was tied with Barcelona on the table, but they led the table by head-to-head record.

    Week 35
Real Madrid led 2-nil at one point against Recreativo, but Recreativo equalized on the 86th minute. All hope seemed lost. Real Madrid sent in Higuian as a late, late sub. He made a blind run at the middle that ended up with Roberto Carlos scoring the winner on the 91st minute. Real Madrid and Barcelona remained tied in points.

    Week 37
The most dramatic weekend of all: Barcelona met Espanyol and Real Madrid met Real Zaragoza simultaneously.

Espanyol took an early lead, but Messi equalized with his infamous "hand of God" goal wich people compared it with Maradona's one). It seemed to have broken up the spirit of Espanyol. Messi scored another one to take a 2-1 lead.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid was losing 2-1. Zaragoza was leading 1-nil for most of the match. Then, Real Madrid equalized, but Zaragoaza answered back instantly and the second goal seemed to have taken the stream out of Real Madrid.

And then, suddenly, Real Madrid eqaulized to make it 2-2. Fourty seconds later, Espanyol also equalized to make their game 2-2. Both team remained tied. Seville was 2 points behind.

    Week 38
Real Madrid played against Mallorca at home while Barcelona travelled to Gimnotic. Mallorca took a HT lead, but Real Madrid scored three times in the 2nd half and won the title. The two winning goal were scored on the 81st minute.

That season was more than just that one game.

Real Madrid also made a dramatic comeback against Espanyol with 4 games remaining. Espanyol was leadibng 3-1 at HT. Then, Higuian scored on the 89th minute to make it 4-3. The following day, Barcelona gave up a 89th minute goal against Betis. That weekend, Real Madrid tied Barcelona on points on the table, but they led by better head-to-head record.

The following week, the same thing happened again. Real Madrid was leading 2-nil at one point against Recreativo, but Recreativo scored to equalize on the 86th minute goal. Roberto Carlos scored the winner again on the 89th minute.

Then, came the game you mentioned above. Messi also scored his infamous "Hand of the God" goal on that match. Real Madrid equalized against Racing Zaragoza on the 89th minute. Then, 40 seconds later, Barcelona lost a goal against Espanyol. Seville was only 2 points behind and they also drew that weekend.

On the last match day, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Seville all could win the title. Real Madrid made a comeback win agains Mallorca to win the title.
