Is the 21st Century footballer driven as much by money as he is ambition and desire to succeed on the football pitch?

I have entered a blog exemplifying Craig Bellamy's recent revealing quotes, that can be found on the link below:

And would like to know what you make of the attitude of him and other millionaire footballers.

Is there too much money in the game?
Should the FA impose a salary cap?

The sensationalist tabloids are speculating that Bullard, whose contract is up at the end of the season, is looking for an £80,000 weekly wage…

I imagine they have come to this valuation as being on a Bosman the midfielder wont cost a transfer fee and with the recent call up to the England squad his profile has been raised somewhat. Still, is Bullard worth that figure? I’m not convinced.

I think Bellamy speaks the truth! There is alot more money in England, and thats why it is so much more popular. Money in the Prem is probably in excess, but the fact that 3 of the 4 teams in last years Champ League semi's shows how dominant English club football is right now! And I think a salary cap is just not feesable to keep their dominance!

I see your point - but surely if a salary cap was set at, still a preposterous, £100,000 a week not many footballers could complain. it’s sickening to see, for example, the likes of Lampard grabbing the Chelsea badge on his shirt, kissing it, in what is a childish gesticulation of apparent loyalty when the man could only agree to a new contract that is worth an alleged rough estimate of £130,000 a week (if not more).

When you put sponsorship deals on top of that, plus bonuses, it is absolutely out of control. These players are so ludicrously rich that what does an extra £20,000 a week mean to them? It is a combination of agent trying to get the most out of it and simply the players ego of his own valuation.

When you consider clubs in the lower leagues are falling into administration, the FA need to act. I honestly feel the FA could do with imposing a system that generates money more fairly around its leagues. It would be a lot more helpful than the current penalty of deducting 15 points from teams who go into administration- which is harsh to say the least when the circumstances are genuine.

It seems like too much bother to maintain three accounts to carry on poor quality imaginary banter, but I guess we should be thankful that it keeps you off the streets.
