Hard time selling Gore's Global Warming manifesto when... Will Canada see its first white Christmas since '71? Updated Sun. Dec. 21 2008 9:19 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNe.../winter_storm_081221/20081221?hub=CTVNewsAt11 The first day of winter brought wind-chill warnings, snow and a bevy of storms to cities across Canada on Sunday, potentially laying the groundwork for the first cross-country white Christmas in nearly four decades. Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips told CTV Newsnet that "it looks like a very good chance" it will be a white Christmas for all parts of Canada for the first time since 1971. SEVERE COLD WAVE TO HIT EUROPE AccuWeather - Joe Bastardi's Europe Column POSTED: 6:40 a.m. December 19, 2008 http://www.accuweather.com/ukie/bastardi-europe-blog.asp?partner=accuweather The development of a major blocking high pressure system over the north atlantic and its subsequent backing west is about to throw most of Europe into the coldest winter weather pattern in many a year. In fact, Temps over the next month or so are liable to average 6-10 degrees F below normal over the center part of the continent with the northwest coldest last, but still getting into the games. Intuitive with this is the likelihood of more than normal snow and ice. As the upper block backs west, arctic discharges from the north and east are liable to bring shots of severe cold back into England and with it enhanced snowfall. Winter visits with a vengeance from East to West Dec 22, 8:06 PM (ET) By POLLY ANDERSON http://apnews.myway.com/article/20081223/D9583L4O0.html The weather outside was frightful from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Ore., on Monday, with last-minute holiday shoppers shivering and stranded travelers hoping for the best as Christmas rapidly approached. The little town of Eustis, Maine, got nearly 3 1/2 feet of snow. In Marysville, Wash., north of Seattle, heavy snow collapsed part of the roof Monday at the Whitley Evergreen factory, which makes modular buildings. No one was injured, but inspectors were dispatched to make sure other buildings in the business park were safe. Live Chill Map http://vortex.plymouth.edu/uschill.gif Snow in Las Vegas and California? That was last week... Las Vegas gets heaviest snow fall in 30 years http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...egas-gets-heaviest-snow-fall-in-30-years.html The desert city of Las Vegas, celebrated for its balmy air and 24-hour casinos, has given gamblers a surprise with the heaviest snowfall in almost 30 years...
I believe the theory of global warming applies planet-wide, so your selective observations that yes, indeed, it gets cold in the northern hemisphere in the winter is, uh...pointless. Global warming does not imply that it will be warm all over the planet all of the time. But nice try though. Merry ********in' Christmas.
Of course, you try explaining that to many Canadians who haven't seen a White Christmas, let alone the cold temperatures that come with it.
It will be in the 60's in Columbus Ohio on Friday. Also, the media loves covering the weather, it's a cheap and easy story.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5io8-mhR216BbP-65r8IrK1C6y8ZQD953PNG00 the reason we haven't heard about global warming as much is the basic economic theory that as people and the economy are better off, they wanted a better environment. there hasn't exactly been a booming global economy recently, thus less of a demand for stricter environmental policies. never mind the fact that the economy is a much hotter topic for the news to cover. also remember there's a difference between weather and climate. i would have hoped that they covered that in your elementary science class. just as every hurricane isn't automatically a result of climate change, a freak "white Christmas" doesn't disprove global warming. it's the trends that matter.
You've all been too busy exporting those "Arctic Chills" and "Cold Front dropping down from Canada" and "Cold Canadian Air Masses" for the past 35 years to have any snow left for Christmas! Just look at those arrows! Cut it out DoyleG! I don't mind this kind of story, I just expect that when it's hotter than heck next summer, ItN will start a HOLY CRAP GORE IS RIGHT thread then, too! Incidentally, just a week ago the World Meteorological Organization announced this was the 10th warmest year since measurement of global averages began in 1850. The key change has been weather extremes, which is what we have now.
Meanwhile average Sierra Nevada snowpack continues to plummet, while average Sierra Nevada precipitation amounts remains more or less unchanged. Hmmm ...
glaciers melt even when the earth isn't warming. And they disappear even when the world is cold. Its called precipitation, and continuous precipitation is necessary regardless of world temperature.
I think a more interesting phenomenon is how quickly global warming dropped from the global political agenda. Some policies that have been aimed at stopping and reversing global warming have been analyzed to pull the world into a recession...I wonder if the global warmers will still be pushing for aggressive action once this recession is over. I still feel about the same as I did when this whole thing became a prominent issue. Sure, we cause global warming, but our impact is minimal compared to natural forces, and we could never stop it even if we wanted to. And all policies should be weighed on a cost-benefit basis...which means we must understand the benefits before we can know if the costs are worth it. Since nearly every climate model we have has been wrong, and have been under revision, I don't think we can make a good cost-benefit analysis. We should be focusing on possible solutions that can also accomplish other worthwhile goals, such as energy independence, transportation infrastructure improvements and technology, congestion reduction, etc.
No. I'm saying that some of the policies proposed were also analyzed as possibly pushing us into a recession. We haven't done anything yet that could have pushed us into it.
Say it with me...can you hear me all the way in the back of the short bus? "Climate change." Sound it out if you have to, and just to keep it easy, I will link to the easy-to-understand definition of climate.
Considering the average person's grasp on global politics is dependent on news wires that run with fantastic headlines and severely dumbed down science, and there are more fantastic headlines to run with these days, it really is hardly surprising. And some policies haven't... Actually, there is a good chance we could stop it...ahem...cold, but the detriment to the global climate is unknown, though it isn't likely to be good. A long term solution is needed, unfortunately I don't think there is a solution that is both scientifically, economically, and socially viable right now. That is propaganda. Yes, some climate models have been terribly wrong, but most, while not exceptionally accurate, have done excellent jobs of giving general trends - which is really what they're for. Those who don't understand the science look for weatherman in SanDiengoesque predictions and scream "foul" the second they don't get that. It is laughable. Spot on. All of these solutions are being worked on, though because they aren't likely to generate those previously mentioned fantastic headlines that the news services and the general public love so much, they don't get a lot of press.
I understand the propaganda aspect to that argument, and you wont find me arguing that extreme. But the simple fact is that the most prominent model has been very inaccurate, to the point where they have had to make major revisions to their theories. And those major revisions have also accompanied major changes in how climatologists understand how ocean currents affect our climate. The general trend is there, yes. But similar to what you have already said, we don't understand our climate well enough scientifically to be able to make set projections as to what will happen...especially when they claim things like how we are on the border of a positive feedback loop that will spiral out of control. And it seems like the opportune time to do so for a Keynesian-adhering president. Personally I think its a good thing that these things stay out of the hysteria limelight.
It was warmer than usual in Liaoyang, China. Ok, I was still freezing, but less than last year in relative terms.
You don't think that perhaps people might be a bit more concerned about the free market policies that actually did lead to the recession, rather than saying "well thank god we didn't do any of those global warming policies - they could have been a disaster!"
Oh yes, this is a good one. All those Toyota Prius' and solar panels and ethanol caused the global recession. You think it might have has something to do with the fact that 70% of the economy is consumer spending, and most of the consumer money that was being spent was related to out-of-control housing prices and easy "no job, no income, no asset" loans, and then when people stopped paying back those loans, the banks froze up like Chicago airport on a winter's day? Nope, it's Al Gore's fault. That fat bastard stopped eating all the pies, which really were the basis of the global economy.
ITN lives here locally in the DC area. I'll be sure and bump this thread in the middle of August and he can tell us what his views are on global warming then.
Hey! I like Al, he seems like a good guy (other than his disastrous choice in women), but dammit, I gotta draw the line somewhere. Those. Pies. Are. Mine!
If you're truly interested in the topic and a good, semi-detailed overview of the science, I highly recommend Ice, Mud and Blood. It is hardly a definative work, and the author does support the theory of climate change, but for most of the book he is objective and thorough in his explanations (so thorough in some cases that rereading pages is necessary).
No, never had the pleasure. He used to post and list himself as a DC United fan back in the day. He still lists his location as Northern Virginia aka commie land or NOT the real Virginia.
He's probably the ultra-liberal guy who keeps handing you the bottle of Captain Morgan Special Reserve at the tailgates and is one of our friends. He just adopted this persona while finishing up his thesis in Creative Writing for Psychopaths and can't stop himself
