http://http://www.prsoccer.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=186&Itemid=2 I found this bit of news this morning. About midway through the page it says that the PRSL is in talks with DC United to have them use a new 18 thousand stadium in Mayagüez. From the context I think they mean for DC United to start a feeder team in the PRSL much like Pachuca, Sevilla, River Plate, and Flemense. The following is from WIKI: "Mayagüez will host the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games for which the local and commonwealth governments have provided an investment of $250 million for, among other things, building two new stadiums (which are being built at the former site of the Isidoro García Baseball Stadium)" I would like to have DC United spread their brand in PR. Lets see if we hear more news about this in the future.
Well I'm going by this forum's standard that if Goff hasn't reported on it it's a rumor (rumour for you anglophiles)
Considering that Goff reported that there's rumo(u)rs of cutting team rosters from 28 down to 24 but increasing the number of senior slots, we'll need a decent feeder team.
Yeah but if this happens United fans will complain that the ownership is throwing money away on high priced norte-americanos and looking down on Puerto Ricans. I can see it now, Dynachenco becomes a DP. PS I don't really have anything against Dynachencho. I think more has been expected of him than is probably warranted & has been played out of place at times especially in the midfield. I couldn't resist the joke though.
This would be very cool. I lived in PR for 3 1l2 years. I actually played High School soccer down there. I scored two goals in my High School career. The bad news: they were both own goals.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2008/11/mls_news.html Goff reports that there will no longer be a reserve division in MLS. This news could potentially correspond with DC talking with the PRSL to start a farm team.
there must be a used black and red barge somewhere we could get our hands on Perhaps some of Sarah Palin's friends could get us a bridge built in time .....
"En cuanto a Mayagüez, el estadio de los Centroamericanos, que estaría situado al lado del estadio de beisbol Isidoro García, sería el primer estadio construido para el futbol (SSS) específicamente para el futbol profesional. Este estadio no ha comenzado a ser construido, y por ende no estaría habilitado para el 2009, lo cual hace menos probable que Mayagüez sea escogido para albergar dicha franquicia para la temporada entrante." I found this news from http://futbolboricua.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2008-11-11T11%3A40%3A00-05%3A00&max-results=7. Basically there will be two stadiums in Mayaguez. One is a reconstruction of a baseball field. The other is going to be Puerto Rico's first SSS. I'd love to see a DCU affiliated team play in a brand spankin new SSS. Hopefully this partnership becomes official.
Reportedly the USL side Puerto Rico Islanders are in talks with DCU to play a friendly (or friendlies) against each other early next year. Wonder if this means DCU is planting roots in Puerto Rico
I was thinking the same thing. This is a smart move by DC. Spreading their brand in a new market that loves sports. Next time I go down there I need to catch a couple of games.
Do the Islanders play in a baseball park? I remember watching a game a few months ago that was part of either SuperLiga or CCC that was right after a torrential downpour. It looked kind of weird because the stands were like 50 yards away.
How come Puerto Rico can spend $250 Million for a month or two and fenty can't pony up $150 million to last 20 to 30 years. DC Govt is cheap. DC Residents, would be in favor to raise taxes to finance a soccer stadium?
