Pic from Dinho's Official Main Site IMHO, if he makes it with Brazil in the 2010 South Africa WC & becomes perchance champ, bye-bye Romário, Hagi, Baggio, Ronaldo, Zidane, Henry, Messi, Kaká, Cronaldo as the greatest player of the last 15 years ... 'Nos vemos próximamente' means: 'See you soon'... Pueden cobrar.
We'll see. He's 28 now and in 2010 will have the same age of Pelé in 1970 (and the King last full successful World Cup had been 12 years before, almost twice as much as Dinho)... Nobody forgets how to ride a bike, agree Trib? ...
Don't use that example, KK. Don't even try. Pele had already set his status as the best player of his generation far before that 1970 WC. Pele had basically a monstrous career to back him up when he entered that tournament, breaking tons of records in the process and offering display which make Ronaldinho's performances fade like a candle near a lighthouse. That before bringing into the discussion the disparity in terms of ability and professionalism. You can become too fat to use it, though.
Riquelme for a start. It should also be noted that, despite what some might claim, a player like Davids was far more influential to Barcelona's revival. Although if we want to have this discussion I suppose it would be best for people to define the period of time they consided Ronaldinho to be the best.
I'd say just off the top of my head 2004-mid 2006, although you could possibly stretch that back further if you want to include his 2002 WC performance. And Davids was key in Barcelona's revival, but certainly not 'far more influential' than Ronaldinho, IMO. And Davids wasn't there when Barca started winning titles. So unless you consider Ronaldinho's prime to only encompass the 5-6 month period when he played with Davids then the latter has no place in this discussion, IMO. As for 'Riquelme for a start', presumably that means you have others as well?
Whistle!... Off-side, dear friend. Nobody here compared them quality wise. We're dealing here exclusively with the last 15 years. Pelé was just cited as another among many examples of a player who 'failed' in a Cup and came back (even at an 'advanced' age) in another. In that sense I could have also cited Maradona or even Dunga. As I added, in 1970 'the King last full successful World Cup had been 12 years before, almost twice as much as Dinho'. Besides Dinho might not have had Pelé's number of titles or levels of performance, but in the last 15 years, in function not only of his masterful destruction of England in 2002 (the game that really decided that Cup) but also of his performances in Barcelona, I don't see anybody who's been technically better than him in that period (I do defy you to cite me one) ... He is thin and happy now. Beforehand he was not even 'fat' (that's a R9 priviledge): he was simply 'sad'... With him riding again and Robinho 'pedalling', better watch out ...
This thread 'fit as a glove' (Brz expr.) in the present moment, since the Italian championship ('one of the hardest of the world', as some fill their mouth with) is only in its beginning and only 1 1/5 year separate us from South Africa. Within the next months we'll see who's right ... If I'm the wrong one, I'll be glad to concede it. Regardless Tribune circling the 'mortal rests' of Ronnie... Do make your bets, folks!
You don't think Zidane is. You don't think Gaucho is. Frankly, what's your choice? (an Euro one: you already showed you love Riquelme) ...
I think the magic is gone. He's definitely not the same player he used to be, and never will be, quite frankly.
Why does that apply? Simply because I disagree with you, and did so respectfully, does not mean you need to challenge my opinion by asking what club I support.
Just intuition. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/league?id=ita.1&&cc=3888 You're Lazio, aren't you?... PS: Why asking what's your club is so much disrespectful? ... PS: Don't play the 'pure' guy, will you?...
It's very easy to say that in 2008 after reading all those encyclopaedias. But, immediately after 1966, ANY European (including you) would say: the 'King' is done... Even him himself said: 'I'll never play a World Cup anymore' ... And he did play it - and was his best. In spite of ALL of you. Precisely the same way it could be happening with Ronaldinho (watch out, Trib)... By the way, I never aked you: what's your team? ...
Are you high or something there lol? My username is "Scolari". Common sense would tell the average poster here that either I'm a Brasil junkie, or simply a Chelsea fan, or both.
Ronaldinho's chance might be gone, but he is a joy to watch and humble for a footballer (unlike CRonaldo) so i can understand why people are hung up on him. IMO, in his prime he was one of the most talented, technical footballers i have ever watched and many aspects of his game went underrated (ie his range of passing and his shooting). He became really commercialized but he definitely deserved player of the year those few years, contrary to what others have posted.
I don't think he's that humble, humble compared to Cronaldo, definitely. But he did claim Barcelona was better than Chelsea going into the tie that ended 4-3 Chelsea.
That's not really much especialy compared to most of today's elite players. I remember one interview when he was in his prime that asked him if he thought he was the best player in the world (when he clearly was), and he responded something along the lines of 'best player in the world? im not even the best player on my team'. This is a huge contrast to players like ronaldo and even kaka who repeatedly thought they were the best in their respective years.
