So, the Breakers got the 2nd pick in the international draft, and drafted the rights to Kelly Smith of England, Fabiana and Maycon of Brazil, and Shinobu Ohno of Japan.

Interestingly, Marta was selected 3rd, by LA, which means that the Breakers passed her by. It could be that Marta said she would only sign with LA, or that her contract demands were more than the Breakers were willing to offer.

Looks like we have some offensive firepower, and some youth in 19-year-old Fabiana and 24-year-old Ohno. Will Kelly Smith be lured away from Arsenal? What do you think of the Breakers selections? And what gaps need to be filled in the next draft on Oct. 6?

I believe that that was probably what it was with Marta. maybe her agent was only going to deal with LA or maybe what she wants, only LA is willing to talk about or both.

I was surprised by the draft order and by some of the picks, or at least the order they fell, Marta-to-LAEG-3 notwithstanding. Guess thats why no one will pay me to run a team :)

I was surprised by some of the ordering too - I'm guessing it has something to do with the teams knowing more than we do about the players' intentions. There's no sense drafting the best available player if she doesn't want to sign with you.

Hopefully, we can actually sign Kelly Smith. I found this article in the Guardian which says that the English FA is concerned about the WPS taking their best players. Apparently, Kelly would be interested in coming. "I love being back home and playing for Arsenal," she said, "but if a big offer came in from America I'd have to consider it."

Or if your business plan doesn't allow for her salary. Tony sounds confident about signing all 4 (I guess he is supposed to sound that way) and if he can the core has been balanced. If not, they could be hurting.

But I will take this approach over the LA one. Hope Marta works out for WPS as Beckham has for MLS. Lots of fannies in seats across the league, but LA on the outside looking in at playoff spots.

I would be fine with this. :)

Marta's one of those players that's so easy to love to hate. I'd love her if she were on my team, but I'll be perfectly content booing her if (hopefully when) she comes to Boston next summer.

not only will we be booing her....we'll be heckling her at every turn!

That being said, I hope she was the one that made it clear she would only play in LA...Because if she wanted Boston and would have agreed to the salary we would offer, it would have been stupoid to pass on her...IMO she's far and away the best player in the world..

I do like Kelly Smith...But I hope the Breakers are confident that they can take her away from Arsenal...If she stays there it would be a disaster for the Breakers and WPS..

I'm looking forward to the next draft...hopefully it's a bit more above board than the last two...

    :D

I don't know...maybe I'm old school and dont think 'Booing' is...whatever the right word is here.

At the Galaxy/Revs games recently a bunch of zipperheads (you know the type, drunk with no shirts on with '23 sux' painted on their chest) were in the stands booing and heckling Beckham...why? He's a good player and has done amazing things for soccer and MLS.

Can you imagine someone booing Bobby Orr or Larry Bird?

Again...maybe I'm old school and taking it too seriously (very possible)...applaude their ability I say.

    I don't know....

Opposing players get booed pretty consistently at Revs games and most pro matches from what I have seen.... Orr then Bourque were treated unmercilessly in Montreal and NY and Bird got his share of jeers outside of the Gahden.... and when they are over-rated OR overhyped, a la Beckham and Landycakes it just becomes more vehement and personal. And when it is a whole team that people love to hate, like many Revs fans feelings for the Fire for instance, it grows even more. It's the nature of the beast.

Maybe some lines get crossed, but I would expect that Marta will hear her share, as will some of our own USWNTers when they show up in enemy colors. But I would hope WPS fans would support their teams and diss the visitors with as much passion as is seen at men's matches.

Are you saying fans in Montreal and New York didn't boo Bobby Orr? Or that fans in Detroit and L.A. didn't boo Larry Bird? IDK what games you were watching!!:D

Are for Mr Posh? I have applauded him before and after matches...But for the 90+ minutes he's playing against my team...He is my enemy!

I remember the looks I got when I booed and heckled Mia Hamm at Nickerson after her constant diving and complaining...and cheered whenever she was carded...Before and after the match there's no bigger supporter of Mia than I am!

I've called Landon Donovan and Brian Ching some very nasty things when they're in their Galaxy and Dynamo jerseys....and gladly shook their hands and supported them to the fullest when they have their USMNT kits on...

To me that's not wrong at all....It's just being a supporter!

Then again, maybe I take it to seriously!:D

So you were the one other person heckling Mia! Took some heat off me IIRC lol..... I thought the soccer moms and PTH's were going to have me run out of the stadium for getting on MIAMIAMIA.....

Don't even get me started about Donovan...

To take the baseball approach, Derek Jeter is one of the best shortstops ever. I absolutely hate him and I (if I could afford the Sox) would boo him in a heartbeat. That being said, he is definitely worthy of my respect. Same thing with Brett Farve, though the respect disappeared a little after the GB fiasco. Tomorrow night at Gillette I will boo Pat Noonan and Schelotto (sp), but believe me, I respect them both. As for Marta, unless she's playing half her games at Harvard, she gets raspberries from me. Carli Lloyd too, which will be hard for me...

I'll "applaud her ability" when she's playing against someone else.

And there were other people heckling Mia... by year 3 anyway. In 2001, heckling Mia brought on a lot of dirty looks from other fans. But I vividly remember one play from the playoff game in which Maren Meinert stole the ball from Mia (and made it look easy). Mia, frustrated, tackled Maren and got a yellow card. About half the crowd around me were booing/heckling Mia and cheering for Maren. Sometimes it takes a while for home team allegiances to develop, but they do.

I'd certainly boo in a situation like the above but not in a general sense or when a talented player touches the ball.

On another note....no one better steal my seats Saturday!!! ; )
