Has got his first team place back and played very well against both Feyenoord an Utrecht as attacking midfielder. We won those matches with 2-0 and 5-1. Haven't seen him playing that well since he came to Eindhoven.

Here on the Ecuador boards, we all know what an excellent, complete player Mendez is. I think he had a bad 2007 season because he literally became a victim of his own success and high expectations.

The reason I say this is because his debut with PSV in 2006 was abnormally good, even for him. I mean 2 goals in his debut match, and several other great goals during the season including the winner against Liverpool in the Champions League. He was clearly inspired by his new life in Europe, and playing at a level that we had not even seen in Ecuador. Frankly I think in 2007 he simply came back to Earth, and couldn't reproduce the magic.

Now, he seems to be more mature, and playing the type of smart, hard-working soccer we all know he can play. Mendez has never been a magician or top goalscorer even in Ecuador - but he has always been a solid multi-purpose midfielder with good passing and a precise, powerful shot. I think he has now finally settled in at PSV and is not trying to do too much, but just play his game, which means he should do very well.

We rate him here for his physical power, workrate and smart-play. We haven't seen that much of his great shot yet. He makes room for players like Afellay, recover balls, great tackle and has a good cross-pass. Especially in European matches a Mendez type of player is very useful, even when he was in a bad shape.

I did talk once with Mendez in Eindhoven under Koeman, when he played terrible. I still remember what he said fast to me, "Siembra defensivo". I think it's great for his developement that Koeman left and Stevens came. He never liked Koeman and Vergoossen.
