BenHouck--- I am only going to consider the Roland Kirk song if you volunteer to play TWO saxophones at the same time, a la Rahsaan, and the Crew Supporter's motto is changed to "Does Your House Have Lions." Yours in the revolution, BG13
Back to Working Class Hero (and I am sorry if this turns out to be a threadjack, really) but I don't think it is negative---or anymore negative than being working class is to begin with. Yes, I believe the song is an indictment of the condition and status. However, there is also something Sisyphean and uplifting about it, too, as in going about your life, and your life consists a lot of things you didn't choose, and your burdens, and giving the universe the finger while doing it.
I think working class hero is a little too political as well. I think we should try to stay away from political stuff in our group. Some groups like Section 8 with their camo and Che Guevarra do enough with the political edge to their groups. I think we need to find something that a)is uplifting b)has some kind of crew connection and c)sounds good with people singing it. I still think "Yellow" is the best suggestion so far
i dunno, whenever you start changing lyrics it always seems really tacky to me. like you're stretching too hard to make it fit. maybe changing just one word or something is ok, but i'm not a big fan. on that note, i will vote the same way i do with beer- the more local the better. gotta be an ohio band or a columbus band out there that we can use. wasn't howling maggie's biggest album released in 1996? same year as the crew starting up. maybe something off of that. i think "alcohol" would be a pretty fitting song for most the nordecke, or "i'm a slut" for others.
Yeah I agree. Changing lyrics is tacky. "Look at the Crew and how they shine for you." Just sounds incredibly lame to me.
If we basically just change the "you" to "Crew" in Yellow it would be perfect. It would sound awesome too. Look at this video of Coldplay at Glastonbury in 2002. The crowd sings it from 1:30 to 2 minutes in the video. It is MASSIVE How awesome would this be? If we could get the FO to play it on the loudspeakers after the game (or before) It would help even more. I think they play "Youll Never Walk Alone" on the PA as The Kop sings it at Liverpool
I am putting in my vote for "yellow". I also wanted to share that I just got back from lunch, where I booed some stranger who was wearing a TFC jersey. But they invented ignorance, so he was completely oblivious.
I like Yellow as a tune to be sung and the lyrics work pretty well. The sentiment is appropriate and I particularly like the skin and bones line as a reminder that these guys are top athletes. Changing you to crew seems awkward. Can we also sing "Crew'll Never Walk Alone"? Picking an anthem seems like serious business. I wouldn't mind hearing more ideas or fleshing out some existing ones. edit: but it does look like the process is starting to wind down. I stumbled on a good pregame song, Born Toulouse-Lautrec by New Bomb Turks. http://www.amazon.com/Born-Toulouse-Lautrec/dp/B000QP5WDE
I would be fine with the original words, but someone on here had a competely reworked version to fit with The Crew posted earlier on here. Someone had said not to change the words, which I agree with mostly it was just the reworked version had the "You" replaced by "crew" such as "I came along, I wrote a song for Crew, and it was called Yellow" which I think could work. Think about this: (a slightly modified version) Look at the stars Look how they shine for Crew And everything The Crew do Yeah, they were all yellow I came along I wrote a song for Crew And all the things that Crew do And it was called yellow So then I took my turn Oh what a thing to have done And it was all yellow Your skin Oh yeah, your skin and bones Turn into something beautiful You know, you know I love you so You know I love you so I swam across I jumped across for Crew Oh what a thing to do Cos you were all yellow I drew a line I drew a line for Crew Oh what a thing to do And it was all yellow Your skin Oh yeah your skin and bones Turn into something beautiful And you know for Crew I'd bleed myself dry for Crew I'd bleed myself dry It's true, look how they shine for Crew Look how they shine for Crew Look how they shine for Look how they shine for Crew Look how they shine for Crew Look how they shine Look at the stars Look how they shine for Crew And all the things that Crew do
It sounds awkward and doesn't really make sense. I like it as "you" because in context the song is being sung about players on the field. It's all glory to them. The stars shine for them. To say the stars shine for Crew is more saying the stars shine for Crew Nation to borrow a terrible phrase. That's more like saluting yourself.
With a song like Yellow or really most pop songs the issue is that you are always a slave to the context of the song. It doesn't elevate itself beyond that. With a song like You'll never walk alone the context is irrelevant because the song is universal. That song is about a woman who picks the wrong guy. He winds up getting stabbed during a robbery that him and his dickish friends pull. For some reason she mourns and her friends remind her that she'll never walk alone. Then his ghost comes back and sings it again even though she and their kid will walk alone cause he's no less dead.
Except at the time when YNWA started at Anfield, it WAS a pop song. It was in the British charts by Gerry and the Pacemakers, who were a merseybeat rival of the Beatles. The fans sung it because of some civic pride of their local boys making a splash on the charts in the early 60's. From wikipedia- Gerry Marsden told BBC Radio how, in the nineteen-sixties, the deejay at Anfield would play the top-ten commercial records in ascending order, with the number one single transmitted last, shortly before kickoff. Supporters standing on the Spion Kop terrace would sing along, and once You'll Never Walk Alone dropped out of the top-ten, says Marsden, they continued to sing it. The song was originally written by Rogers and Hammerstein in America for Carousel. The cover of it by Gerry and The Pacemakers was played at Anfield at it stuck with the fans, much like "Hang on Sloopy" by The McCoys that was played at The Horseshoe in the 60's. I think the McCoys were an OSU band and that led to the popularity. So i guess the solution is we need OAR to cover "Yellow" then we can sing it Yellow would sound great, the lyrics work, and Coldplay are a great band I think the only other option that would sound as good would be "I cant help falling in love with Crew"
Radiohead are Coldplay without Radio play I like Radiohead, but I dont understand all the Coldplay haters either. They arent Nickelback or the Jonas Brothers or something
Yea I don't get it, I guess 40 Year Old Virgin gave them a bad rep... But this would be monumental if this actually went through with the FO and we actually executed it.. I'm all for Yelllow
this would be key. especially with a long song. without the music maybe just a portion should be isolated. possibly starting with "I swam across...." and ending at "...for Crew I bleed myself dry" if the group was going to just do it on their own. The verse with "...for Crew I bleed myself dry" seems to be everyone's favorite.
I liked Coldplay when they first came out. But they have really latched on to that syncopated eighth note rhythm so that many of their songs sound to similar. I guess I find them boring now. But I didn't like Beck for a while so what do I know?
OK, I originally wrote out the modified verses to Yellow as just a self-entertainment exercise in creativity. I like that it sparked some extra interest in the song and that we're having this discussion now. My personal preference would be to just sing Yellow the way Chris Martin wrote it. It makes sense when we sing it who we are singing it for. And I agree the line "for you I bleed myself dry" would be the most emphatic of what we feel for the team, and should thus be included in whatever way we end up singing the song. I don't see why we couldn't get the office folks to play the song after each game and we sing it then, win or lose. We can't get it beforehand because of the mandated MLS anthem being played when the players come out. As for changing lyrics being tacky, well, I guess you just do think about any of the chants and cheers that we do, which are predominantly songs with wording changes yet kept to the original tune.
