Harbour View midfielders Jermaine Hue and Keith Kelly have been included in a 23-man local-based squad to begin training for the country's upcoming World Cup qualifier against Canada.
[IMG]Jamaica's Jermaine Hue (left) being tackled by Wayne Bridge of England during an international friendly at Old Trafford in 2006.
Both players, despite their obvious qualities, have not been a part of the national team set up for some time.
Hue, a long-time Harbour View player who lit up the local Premier League, ventured to North America to play in the MLS for Kansas City Wizards in 2005 where he stayed for one season. The following year he moved to Mjallby, Sweden, for a short stint before heading back to Jamaica.
The 30-year-old Hue, who made his debut for the country over nine years ago, was last invited to the national squad in February against Costa Rica in an Ash Wednesday friendly international.
Kelly, 25, was once seen as the brightest talent on the local horizon. That belief seemed justified when at 17 years old he was picked up by famed French club Paris Saint-Germain. He was later loaned out to Belgian club Mons before returning home where he represented Arnett Gardens.
He made another move abroad to Trinidadian club San Juan Jabloteh in 2005 where he suffered a badly broken ankle. That injury kept him out of serious action until last season when he returned to Harbour View FC, his first club.
Kelly, who made his senior team debut in November 2001 and who last played for Jamaica against Barbados in 2005, did little to convince until recently in a practice game against the national team while playing for Harbour View. In that game both himself and Jermaine Hue impressed technical director Rene Simoes enough for him to invite them to the squad.
"They are playing like new people. I like what I see now," Simoes said of the duo, who showed good mobility while providing defence-splitting passes for their forwards.
Besides Hue and Kelly, seven Under-20 players will form a part of the camp. Central defender and team captain Andre Darby, his central defensive partner Keithy Simpson, right-back Levaughn Williams and Andre Campbell, have been included in the squad. Of that four only Darby has been invited before.
Forward Andre Clennon earned his first call up, while central midfielders Evan Taylor and Davian Thorpe, both of Reno have again earned the right to train among the big boys.
Also included in the squad are goalkeepers Donovan Ricketts, Shawn Sawyers, Dwayne Miller, while O'Brian Woodbine, Eric Vernan and Jermaine Taylor complete the list of defenders.
Keniel Moodie and Hugh Howell earn call ups as central midfielders, while Ricardo Cousins and Jevaughn Watson are listed alongside Hue and Kelly as offensive midfielders.
The trio of forwards Kavin Bryan, Keammar Daley and James Thomas have kept their places in the squad.
Camp begins on August 7 and breaks on August 14. Jamaica open their account in the penultimate round of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers on August 20 in Toronto.

Girlz face Haitian test for group honours

    Karyl Walker
    Tuesday, August 05, 2008

Port of Spain, Trinidad - Jamaica's Under-15 Reggae Girlz need only a draw against Haiti to take group honours and a berth in the semi-finals of the Caribbean Football Union Youth Cup in their remaining preliminary round game at the Queen's Royal College in Port of Spain at 10:00 am today.

The Girlz have so far scored 13 goals without conceding, while the Haitians have scored three and conceded one. Both results came against Aruba.

The Girlz were forced to replay a rain-ruined match against Aruba after leading 6-0, and responded admirably by trouncing the Arubans 13-0 the following day. Since Saturday's resounding victory, the Girlz have been in training and according to coach Oniel Thomas, his team is prepared to go all the way.

"We are conditioned to score goals and we will continue in that trend," Thomas told the Observer, as his team cheered on the Under-17 Reggae Boyz at the Royal Fatima College yesterday.

The Girlz will look to Trudi Carter, powerhouse striker Davia Morrison and the silky Teola Caine to provide the punch up front, while midfielders Shenika Williams and captain Shanise Powell are expected to provide the support in midfield.

In the Aruban encounter, goalkeeper Shernay Henry was never tested, but today's match should be different against a technically efficient and physical Haitian team.

Likely starting 11 - Shernay Henry, Renae Freeman, Kryshania Gordon, Chantae Brown, Sashean Wilson, Shanise Powell , Shenika Williams, Davia Morrison, Natani Traill, Trudy Carter and Teola Caine.

U-15 Girlz whip Haiti 3-0 to reach semis

    KARYL WALKER, Observer staff reporter
    Wednesday, August 06, 2008

St Augustine, Trinidad - Jamaica's Under-15 Reggae Girlz maintained a clean slate with a 3-0 demolition of Haiti to top their group at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine grounds in the Caribbean Football Union Youth tournament yesterday.

The Reggae Girlz ended the three-team round with maximum six points after scoring 16 goals for and none against. The team's cause was aided by goals from Teola Caine, Sherika Williams and Trudy Carter.

The Girlz will now play Bahamas in the semi-final tomorrow, while hosts Trinidad & Tobago tackle the defeated Haitians.
The Girlz started out tentatively as the Haitians packed the midfield and tried to muscle the Jamaicans off the ball with rough tackles.

But the Jamaican team would not be easily intimidated and soon settled.

As the game dragged on, the Jamaicans moved the ball along the turf confidently and kept their opponents on the backfoot as the leather remained in the Haitian half for long periods.

Caine broke the deadlock after she chested down a left-side cross and rammed home through a crowd of Haitian defenders past goalkeeper Coby Alexenore in the 36th minute.

The Haitians launched a few counter-attacks centred around captain and wily midfielder Tirus Perlin.

But the Jamaicans, led by central defender Renee Freeman, defended stoutly and repelled the temporary Haitian onslaught.

At the other end, the Haitains escaped being two goals down after Jamaican captain Shanice Foster combined with powerhouse striker Davia Morrison to send Williams free, but the latter's low drive sailed just wide of the far post, with Alexenore beaten all ends up.

The Haitians barely had time to settle at the beginning of the second half when Williams made amends with a sweet volley off a pinpoint right-sided delivery from Carter.

The second goal seemed to hit the wind out of the Haitians and the Jamaicans started to taunt them by possessing the ball for long periods and launching several attacks down the flank.

Three minutes from the end Carter finished off a move with a shot from the edge of the penalty box to send the Jamaicans further ahead.

    Teams:
Jamaica - Shernay Henry, Renee Freeman, Keyshawn Gordon, Shantea Brown, (Delicia Grey 65th), Sashea Wilson, Shanise Foster (c), Sherika Williams, Davia Morrison (Remoae Hype 27th), NataniTrail (Chantal Gelly 46th), Trudy Carter, Teola Caine.
Subs not used: Chantiel Graham, Shanice Powell, Shyraffadean Thomas, Shenelle Briscoe.

Haiti - Coby Alexenore, Desoria Sebone, Tirus Perlin (c), Rateau Clarette, Rejuoi Rosemonde, ( Jo Baptiste Diewiese 32nd), Rateau Clarone, Jeudi Carmelle, Jean Francios Hayana, Jevne Sindy (Michel AnnFrancios), Jean Yves-Lam, Luarie Saint-Louis.

U-17 Boyz face Guadeloupe in CFU quarter-final

    Karyl Walker
    Wednesday, August 06, 2008

St James, Trinidad - Head coach of Jamaica's Under-17 team, Christopher Dawes, says the young Reggae Boyz will be upping the ante in today's CFU Youth Cup quarter-final clash against French territory, Guadeloupe.

The team plays the feature match of a double-header at Guaracara Park, San Fernando, in the south of Trinidad at 8:00 pm (7:00 pm Jamaica time) against a Guadeloupe outfit that is somewhat of an unknown entity.

According to Dawes, the Jamaicans are hell-bent on giving fans at home something to cheer about.

"We will be treating this match as a cup final seeing that we know very little about them, but as the match goes on we'll assess them and make any necessary adjustments," Dawes said.

In first-round play, Guadeloupe netted 15 goals and conceded one in their three-team group which included Suriname and the US Virgin Islands.

The Reggae Boyz scored 12 and also conceded one in their three games.

Yesterday the Boyz were taken through tactical drills by technical director Walter Gama and Dawes in heavy underfoot conditions at the George V Park.

A heavy downpour, the result of a weather system which is passing close to the twin-island republic, lashed sections of the island and more rains are forecast for today.

The Boyz will welcome the return of influential captain, Ashani Fairclough, who sat out the final group match against Dominican Republic after receiving two yellow cards in the first two matches.

Also, towering central defender Jhamie Hyde - who the coaching staff opted to rest because he had received a caution for an overzealous tackle in the team's second match against the Netherland Antilles - makes his return.

The strike trio of Kavarse Bloomfield, Prince Samuels and the pint-sized Ashani Walker should start up front, while Fairclough is expected to marshall the midfield along with Carl Reid and the skilful Marvin Morgan, while Hyde is expected to be partnered at the back by Omar Lawrence, with Neco Brett and Javes Morrison playing the full-back roles.

Goalkeeper Shawn Lawes, who has shown a safe pair of hands in the tournament so far, is expected to start between the sticks.

In the opener, the tournament's leading goal-scoring team, Cuba, will tackle the winners of the Bermuda-Guyana match which was under way at press time.

In other semi-final action, resurgent hosts Trinidad & Tobago tackle a dogged Dominican Republic, while Haiti face St Vincent & the Grenadines in the opener at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya.

KING AXED from Boyz squad for World Cup qualifier

    Thursday, August 07, 2008

[IMG]KING... not summoned for World Cup qualifier against Canada
PROLIFIC Jamaican striker Marlon King has not been summoned for the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying game against Canada, scheduled for Toronto on August 20.
According to local website JamaicaWin.com, King - one of the leading strikers for the Reggae Boyz over the past four years - has not been recalled to the Jamaican outfit by national technical director Rene Simoes.
Yesterday, Simoes confirmed that all the players for the crucial match against the North Americans have already been officially notified.
"All the players have been called. The final list will be made public when we finish the camp (on August 14)," the little Brazilian told JamaicaWin.com, which means the busy forward is effectively out.
Meanwhile, King's omission seems to have been verified by the media manager of the striker's England club, Wigan Athletic.
"He (King) has not yet received a call-up for that game (against Canada)... Maybe he will get a call soon," was the response when the Premier League club was contacted yesterday.
King last played for the Reggae Boyz in the first of a two-leg World Cup qualification tie against the Bahamas at the National Stadium in June, where he scored a cracker of a goal in a 7-0 demolition of the Caribbean side.
However, he sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes in the second game at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium when the Jamaicans ran rings around their opponents on the way to a convincing 6-0 shut-out.
In a letter to the media last month, Simoes hinted that there could be surprises in a squad inundated with foreign-based stars. In his usual discourse on discipline, self-control and developing a winning habit, Simoes said:
"... These are the things we are working (on) with our players; some will be there, some will not. I will not compromise my principles in the name of a player, or the clubs or the persons who are connected to them," he said.
"We have to work as a team," Simoes declared a few days ago as he waited on his players after a practice match in which they beat Premier League team Harbour View 2-1.
"I have no time to work with those who cannot fit into the unit. When I came here the first time I had enough time to make changes as we went along. On this occasion, we have to work with those who can fit into the team."
According to Simoes, football has changed over the years to the point where any team can do without any one player.
"Manchester United has not done badly since David Beckham moved to Real Madrid," he offered.
King was suspended for two years in 2006 by the previous Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) administration - led by Crenston Boxhill - for indisciplined behaviour in England ahead of a friendly international against that country.
He was reinstated by the Captain Horace Burrell-led administration last November following its victory at the polls.
King made an auspicious scoring debut for Jamaica against Venezuela in April 2004. Two months later he followed up by notching a hat-trick against Haiti in a World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Kingston.
The well-built striker, who scored twice when Jamaica beat El Salvador 3-0 in San Salvador during the last World Cup qualification campaign, is currently involved in a protracted transfer from Wigan to Hull City.
Meanwhile, Simoes said the players for Jamaica's second game in the qualifiers against CONCACAF kingpins Mexico on September 6 are yet to be decided.
"It's a long time between the two games, so we have to wait and see. It could be the same players, or we may call others," he stated. "The door is never closed."
In his first stint as technical director, Simoes gained dubious renown for excluding some of the country's more celebrated players at times - most notably, Walter Boyd and Onandi Lowe.

King is a far better option that both Shelton and Burton. I agree that Simoes has some type of love affair wit Burton and is living in the past. I havent been convinced wit Simoes' player selection and team tactics for several months now.

Girlz edge T&T 3-2 to lift CFU Youth Cup
    Monday, August 11, 2008

[IMG]Reggae Girlz captain Shanice Foster (right foreground) collects the winner's trophy after her team's 3-2 victory over Trinidad and Tobago at the Marvin Lee stadium yesterday. (Text and photo: Karyl Walker)
Macoya, Trinidad - Jamaica's Under-15 Girlz football team pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory over hosts Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean Football Union Youth Tournament at the Marvin Lee stadium in Macoya here yesterday.
Boosted by a double strike from the Most Valuable Player of the final, Sherika Williams, and another from Chantal Gelly, the young Girlz pulled off a stunning victory and silenced the partisan crowd inside the stadium.
Talented striker Jo-Marie Lewis and Kaysha Taylor netted for the hosts.
[IMG]Reggae Girlz' forward Davia Morrison (left) challenges Trinidad and Tobago's Khadidra Debisette during yesterday's final of the CFU youth tournament at the Marvin Lee stadium in Macoya, Trinidad. The (Photo: Karyl Walker)
Winning coach Oniel Thomas said despite the short time his squad had to prepare, the girls fought tooth and nail to the end.
"The real Jamaican fighting spirit was on show here today. Full praise is due to the entire squad for this victory and we dedicate it to the Jamaicans at home," an elated Thomas said.
Matches between Jamaica and Trinidad are always keenly contested and yesterday's defeat left a bitter taste in the mouth of the home fans, who roundly booed the victors during the presentation ceremony.
The Jamaicans displayed true character as they soaked up early pressure from the home team who were cheered on by their supporters. After 20 minutes the Reggae Girlz settled and began to move the ball sweetly on the artificial surface to gain the ascendancy over their more fancied opponents.
The opening goal was the product of one of the Jamaicans' many forays into their opponents' penalty area. On the stroke of half-time, as forward Davia Morrison was being treated for an injury, Williams pounced on a ball in the six-yard box and buried it to the delight of the Jamaicans. In the moments following the opener, the silence inside the stadium was eerie.
At the resumption, the homesters came out determined to level the scores and were duly rewarded in the 51st minute when Lewis rammed home from a goal-mouth melee.
But the Reggae Girlz were stung into action by the equaliser and responded like champions.
Immediately after the equalising goal, the Jamaicans launched an attack, which ended with a fighting Chantal Gelly, finishing off a sweet move with a low drive past a hapless Trinidadian custodian, Linfah Jones.
Before the Trinidadians could respond, the Jamaicans went further ahead when Williams scored her second with a sublime finish to break the hearts of the home fans.
But the Trinidad girls were far from finished and went into overdrive in an effort to peg back the Jamaicans.
They were handed a lifeline in the 71st minute when goalkeeper Shernay Henry was ejected for a professional foul on Lewis, after the latter broke free just outside the penalty box. The ejection forced the Jamaicans to bring on reserve goalkeeper, Shantel Graham, in place of midfielder, Teola Caine.
The resulting free-kick was struck superbly by Taylor and ended up in the top left corner of the Jamaican goal to send the previously silent Trinidad supporters into a frenzy.
But the Jamaicans, although down to 10 players stuck to the task and defended stoutly to take home the CFU trophy and avenge Friday's defeat by their Under-17 male counterparts, while tears streamed down their opponents' faces.
The Girlz ended the tournament with 22 goals for and only two against, both conceded yesterday.

    Squad for Canada

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    August 13, 2008

Canada Squad for World Cup Qualifier

Harbour View midfielder Jermaine Hue cemented his return to the Reggae Boyz band when he was named in a squad of 20 selected for Jamaica’s opening encounter in the semi-final round of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

Hue, 30, only returned to the national squad earlier this month after his last call up for the Ash Wednesday friendly against Costa Rica, in which he did not feature. Accompanying Hue’s return was confirmation that 28-year-old striker Marlon King will not play a part in the game against Canada.

The squad was a largely local-based one with 18-year-old Reno midfielder Davion Thorpe set to travel with the senior team for the first time while fellow youngster and clubmate Evan Taylor who made his debut in June against St Vincent and the Grenadines, keeps his place in the squad. Sporting Central midfielder Jevaughn Watson could earn his second cap for the country following his El Salvador debut as he too is on the list along with Colorado Rapids forward Omar Cummings who made his debut in the same game. Technical director Simoes was full of praise for the hardworking player, especially his movement on and off the ball a quality which will serve the team well.

Also included in the squad are the ever presents in captain Ricardo Gardner, Tyrone Marshall, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, Rodolph Austin, Demar Phillips, Luton Shelton and Andy Williams. The team will depart Saturday morning for Toronto, Canada and return Thursday, following Wednesday’s game.

Meanwhile the officials for the game are Referee Carlos Batres, Assistant Referees Rodolfo Gonzales and Alejo Mendez all from Guatemala. There countryman Walter Lopez will be the fourth official while Francis Cezair of Trinidad and Tobago has been assigned the duties of Match Commissioner and Carlos Ortiz, Referee Assessor.

Full squad: Goalkeepers – Ricketts, Shawn Sawyers; Defenders – Marshall, Ian Goodison, Keneil Moodie, O’Brian Woodbine, Demar Stewart, Jermaine Taylor; Midfielders – Austin, Thorpe, Evan Taylor, Watson, Hue, Gardner, and Wolry Wolfe; Forwards – Deon Burton, Cummings and Williams.

VERY disappointed that Phillips is not part of the squad.

As for Bibi in the midfield..dunno, but he's looked fairly comfy in the role....especially in the late 07. You'd a like him play the same way him play fi Bolton?

[IMG]HUE. makes return to national set-up
Technical director of Jamaica's football, Brazilian Rene Simoes, has selected a 20-man squad of mainly local-based talent which includes one debutante, three rookies and a midfield discard for next Wednesday's CONCACAF World Cup qualifying game against Canada in Toronto.
The new player is 18-year-old Reno FC midfielder Davion Thorpe, while clubmate Evan Taylor, Sporting Central's Jevaughn Watson and Colorado Rapids' Omar Cummings complete the list of those making recent debuts at the Senior level.
Taylor made his debut on June 3, in the team's 5-1 win over St Vincent and the Grenadines at 'The Office', while Watson and Cummings had theirs in a 0-0 draw with El Salvador in Texas, USA, on July 26.
Simoes was particularly impressed with Cummings and cited the striker's ability to move on and off the ball as a valuable asset to the team.
Meanwhile, Harbour View's mercurial midfielder, 30-year-old Jermaine Hue, is making a return since he was last summoned for the Ash Wednesday home friendly against Costa Rica, but the tricky player did not take part in the game which ended 1-1.
A notable absentee from the squad is 28-year-old England-based striker Marlon King, whose omission comes as a surprise as he has been one of the team's top goalscorers since making his debut in 2004.
King, who played in Jamaica's 7-0 demolition of The Bahamas in the first leg of the two-way first-round tie at the National Stadium on June 15, was kept on the bench in the second match at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Complex three days later as the Reggae Boyz won 6-0.
The squad is a shift from the top-heavy foreign-based group that competed against The Bahamas, and only seven of those overseas-based professionals have been recalled.
They are captain Ricardo Gardner, Ian Goodison, Andy Williams, Tyrone Marshall, Luton Shelton, Deon Burton and Demar Phillips.

Yes Bibi's position that he plays in Bolton is his natural position. I think he is a better attacker utilised that way. He can contribute alot more going forward. Phillips I have to agree. He should be in the team. Dunno why he isnt. The only person who I hate watching play for us is Fuller. He shouldnt be anywhere near our squad.
