I think you need to let that one go, it does not sound good in Englsh or Spanish.

I know some people like those names but as a personal matter I really hope if and when Arizona gets an MLS team we won't go that route. I would be sorely, tragically disappointed if we ended up FC Phoenix or Phoenix AC or something equally dull and unoriginal. I can't help it. I'm afraid I'm firmly entrenched in the Lions, Tigers, and Bears school of team names. Any reasonably dignified NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL-style name would be light years better than having no name at all or some copycat name to ride the coattails of established European teams rather than forging our own identity.

Small problem with marketing this name.

Nova- cool in english space terms
No va- "No go" in Spanish

Basically to our entire Spanish speaking population we would be the team with no go in them.

(they had this problem with the chevy nova too. Don't worry, you weren't the first)

I like Scorpions or Phoenix Rising, but realistically are we getting a team? I don't think so. Any millionaires want to start a team on this board?

No, it doesn't seem like a team is in our foreseeable future. Best thing we can do is to do what we can to make sure that MLS knows Arizona has a bunch of fans just waiting to buy season tickets.

Anyway, not that Nova was ever my #1 pick but I still like it!

    From Wikipedia:
"A popular urban legend asserts that the Nova sold poorly in Latin America because the phrase no va means "doesn't go" in Spanish. In reality, if a Spanish-speaking person were to say that his car was not working, he would more likely use the terms no marcha or no funciona, ("does not run" or "does not work/function," respectively) instead, just as an English-speaking person would be more likely to say "this car doesn't work," than say "this car doesn't go."[1] The word nova, as opposed to no va, exists in Spanish with the same meaning as in English. Also, the Spanish word for "new" (nuevo or nueva) is a cognate to nova, which originally meant "new" in Latin. In addition, the Nova actually sold well, exceeding Chevrolet's expectations."

As a former boarding schoolboy in Paradise Valley (the defunct Judson School), I am happy to see a push for a Phoenix team. However, for the life of me, even after scouring this thread, I continue to be at a loss for a good name. I'm alost hoping for some corporate action similar to RBNY, so we don't even have to worry. What companies are big in The Valley?

"Phoenix Rising" sounds great to me. Nice and simple without a hint of FC, Sporting, Athletic, SC, United, etc in its name.

    DJTanner,

Love this shield. The Arizona state flag has something similar with the beams of light. Maybe you could incorporate that into your design. According to the state govt's website, there are 13 segments (or beams if you will), 6 yellow and 7 red. Check out the link.

I'm taking an astronomy class in school right now, and we saw pictures of some of the telescopes in Arizona. That's why I think the name should be Nova or Super Nova, either one. The shield could be a nova over a desert sky, with the top of the Arizona state flag flowing from the nova.

"Hellfire" is an interesting one. I am not one for names that project heat, mostly becasue I hate the summers here, but that is not bad. Reminds me of the missle. I wonder if it is possible to use that name or would Lockheed Martin be against it.

    Phoenix FC
Phoenix United (Although the initials of PU could give us grief)
Phoenix Hotspurs (Tip of the hat to Tottenham. Plus relevant to desert and old west)
    Phoenix City FC (PCFC)
    Phoenix Wanderers

I like the idea of it being English influenced.

Chivas USA. LA does not need that team. We should take it. We would already have fans with the kits at the game. Just a bit different. They already know the chants.

Phoenix Rising is the perfect name. I'm actually surprised no pro sports team has taken it yet.

FC Phoenix (aka The Phoenix Wild Fire)

I like the old school names like FC Phoenix, but let's be honest, we live in the USA and it's all about marketing and merchandising, so they need to have cool jerseys that fans will wear.

Oh, and we would have a cheerleading team called the Phoenix Hotties.

    I would like "ASC Phoenix"

ASC could stand for Arizona Sports Club / American Soccer Club, but on the other hand it is also short for "Ascending" as in "Ascending Phoenix".
The logo should be something that's upwards pointing, lika a triangle.

Maybe something like that (was bored):

No clue about the colors, though. I took the purple/white from the Flag of the City and added the copper star from Arizona's Flag.

if a team in phoenix doesn't go with Phoenix Rising FC it is a totally wasted opportunity.

As for what to name our team, I don't care so much.

I'd prefer to just call it Phoenix SC/AC/FC and let the fans nickname the team.

I'm more concerned with what the kit will look like. I want a jersey that I will not be ashamed to where to the mall.

No way will you see me in a Phoenix FC jersey if it looks like those clown outfits that Dallas FC, Chivas USA and the like wear.

Come up with something that looks nice without exotic textures or clashing colors.

Oh and we need to start the try outs for our cheerleading team, "The Phoenix Hotties".
