Goff is reporting that DCU signed its first Colorado School of Mines Oredigger in Craig Thompson, a 5'8" 160 lb. right-sided midfielder who played forward in college. He was the 2007 Rocky Mountain Athletic League player of the year and scored 17 goals in 2007. He was drafted by Houston in the 2008 Supplemental draft but did not make the team as he missed pre-season training camp while he finished school and then just had a quick trial with the Dynamo. He played a few reserve game appearances for DCU as a guest player this season. With recent injuries to Quaranta and Mediate, he may get some playing time with US Open Cup and more reserve games on the horizon. He takes the developmental roster spot vacated when Jeff Curtin retired.

The Colorado School of Mines has a high-level soccer team? Do they play underground?

Even better - I love that they're known as the Orediggers!

    Sir:

Alas, they are a low-level soccer team.

    There it is

(Ok, feeling silly after the victory...)

Did you know that, before he was released, Franco Niell made up a small percentage of the DCU roster?

Couldn't tell ya, but it's been there since the 1890s.

    --

Colorado School of Mines' conference, the RMAC, has the best set of nicknames ever.

Grizzlies, Eagles, Cougars, Mountain Lions, Orediggers, ThunderWolves, Skyhawks, Mavericks, Roadrunners, Lopers, Cowboys, Rangers, Mustangs, and Mountaineers.

Is it bad that the first thing I thought was I hope he get cut before the end of the season so all his gear is available at the equipment sale? :D

When I saw Goff's post, I immediately thought of JH6.....and what he wouldn't do to get cut rate stuff with his name on it. :D

Or you could just donate all of Jason Thompson's stuff back to DC. Sort of like an "on loan" deal for your collection. We can all go out to reserve games and watch your equipment in motion. So when Thompson II gets the axe, you can get back all your swag. And maybe anything new he sweat on :)

    Thx,

    Jay!

Hmmmm, obscure dude from a no-name school in Colorado ... is this Chad Ashton's influence? ........ didn't he coach for the mighty U of Denver Pioneers?

    Orediggers is an awesome nickname.

Good idea, but in reality JH6 already owns all of United's stuff, and just leases it back to the team.

Question...I've been thinking about this for a while...

When I was back home in Nebraska a couple months ago, I could've SWORN a read an article about two Omaha players getting signed with United. I believe one of the players came from Creighton Prep High School, and I think the other one may have been from Pius.

Does anyone know where I kind find this information out? The Omaha World-Herald's Web site is pretty much horrible for looking up old articles...

Been there. It is about an hour up the pike from Denver. It is in the same town we can thank for Coors beer. Stupendous mineralogy museum. And, no, not known for its soccer program.

He might not help our midfield, but if he's smart he can parlay this into a job at the US Geological Survey in Reston.

I'm a little concerned about the costs of an oredigger to United.

I'm willing to bet you'd have to take a shaft down just to get to the locker rooms. ;)

ok - let me set the record straight, I've never seen this kid play.

Creighton's Tony Schmitz was drafted in the 4th round, but didn't make the team out of training camp. I believe that he's originally from Omaha.

Stupid NCAA. We had to change our mascot from Indians to Mustangs even though we had the blessing of the Kiowa tribe. Now we have to be lumped in with SMU for god knows how long.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is also the same conference that produced John Cunliffe for Chivas USA and Daniel Woolard (Go Indians!) for the Chicago Fire.

Gotcha. Thanks. I figured both of 'em didn't end up making it through, just cuz I never saw them on the roster or heard anything about them....It would've been sweet to have a fellow Omahan on the team though...
