All who are willing and able supporters should come sing and jump for Metro! Also to show Thierry that Americans have the fever too and he'd be much welcomed in '09 in our new digs. Unless of course, you are a Madrid fan.
I agree. It's likely too late but a formal showing from Red Bulls fans with some additional gesture, maybe a Red Bulls jersey presentation and banner, could have some effect on the great Thierry. Is it too late?
don't get me started on this...if they are good enough to play here they better be playing Saturday....
My guess is this will be less than full-throttle competitive football. If Claudio and Juan are participating in light training with the team, this will amount to about the same thing. None of these guys are going to risk new injuries or the aggravation of old ones. I wish I could be there! It's going to be stars in shorts chasing a ball. Enjoy.
I can't go, as I have to work (in NJ) and don't get off til 6pm. If anyone of you is going, please take some pics/video. Would have been nice to see TH14 play in Chinatown.
I was there today. It was very exciting. I was up front so i was basicaly on the field and could touch them when they passed by. The place was pact and you had maybe 5,000 people trying to watch in a field thats capacity was 100. so you had people climbing on top the high surrounding gates and watching it there. You also had people climbing in the trees trying to watch. Jozy Altidore, Reyna,Henry,Fowler,Kalou,McManus, and Berhalter. Also Gabriel Ferrari was watching from the side and Juan pablo Angel did not play. You also had Baron Davis, Jason Kidd,Steve Nash, Barbosa,Raja Bell and a few actors. I took pictures of the match, as well as a solo picture with Jozy. I will post them shortley. Highlight of the day for me was when Henry did a seal dribble down the field
Juan Pablo did not play, and Altidore took it easy. But from my memory (I only watched the first half), these were the teams: Reyna Berhalter Jason Kidd Solomon Kalou (yes, pretty random but I was pleased to see him) Altidore Baron Davis and a couple other space fillers... against Nash Robbie Fowler Steve McManaman Raja Bell Barbosa Henry and a couple space filllers... Luckily they found a couple men's league type goalies who tried hard. These were my impressions: Kalou and Henry stole the show with their skill and quickness. Most non-US fans probably thought Berhalter was some sort of non-soccer filler. Nash is pretty good. Baron Davis was a joke, by far the worst player. Jason Kidd read the game pretty well and made good decisions, despite not have much soccer skill. He assisted on Kalou's opening goal and easily jumped into the flow of the game. Kalou megged Nash pretty bad in the beginning before I think he realized it was Nash's gig and he should not tool so hard. Reyna played the same as usual, good possession. McManaman and Fowler know what they're doing, but they don't have the touch or creativity to stand out in a small-sided game, like Kalou and Henry, who tooled. Kalou at the beginning and then Henry later on. Barbosa is probably better than half the guys in the MLS. Altidore understandably took it easy and really didn't do much. It was a good atmosphere and people were going wild over Henry. I would say a couple thousand people were there. The field has zero seating, it is a converted basketball playground court with fencing around. And 8v8 size field and I'd say the crowd was six or seven back from the fence.
Woot I was there today it was awesome, I got autographs from Henry, Fowler and took pictures with Altidore and Reyna. It was great to see Kalou there as well but David Lee didn't make it The game was fun to say the least Baron Davis was one of the funniest guy on the pitch. it was a great ambiance.
Aha! One of those guys must have been Alessandro Nivola, who played troubled striker Gavin Harris in that Goal! movie. His IMDb bio says he is a fine player who has appeared in other charity events. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005273/ I thought he looked familiar. That's me, I have a talent for spotting lesser-known celebs. Most recently, it was Stanley Tucci walking up to an ATM in the Rive Gauche and the boy minister from There Will Be Blood coming up out of the 7 train by the NY Public Library. Now that's talent!
that was a blast, wasn't it? really surprised they didn't capitalize on the crowd and at least sell some t-shirts for the foundations; could have raised an extra $10-20,000 did you see Richard Roth intensely covering the event (?) -- CNN report to follow?
I thought they introduced Rob Jones for the yellow side, but, I couldn't recognize him if he was out there {non-bobblehead version}
If you puase it at the 0:06 mark i Am the person in the Black shirt and tan Jean shorts taking a picture with my camera.
ahh you were right next to me then, we were the only kids with NYRB jerseys on. I got to snap this quick picture some of the guys there have a ton of pics, we also got to pose with JPA and Jozy and our ESC scarf. Some of the "officials" were taping us when we were posing with Jozy so gotta look out for news and such..
