I am planning--though nothings official yet, on going there with my wife over New Years (arriving either 12/31 or 1/1 - leaving 1/4/09). I realize 1/1 is an important day, is that a bad time to arrive in town? are things closed for the holiday, is that a super busy time with tourism, etc...?

Does anyone have some travel suggestions, especially tips in effectively planning/reserving a place to stay. How soon in advance should I book a place, etc. What kind of places to stay should I look at. I prefer the city to the beaches. I'm not looking to be super adventurous--We prefer staying in a hotel to a hostel or a guest house or whatever.

I am not looking to party it up, I just want to be there and check some things out.

Any advice or resources would be great, thanks...

Do you and/or your wife travel on something other than US passports? It's getting harder and harder to sneak into Cuba if you're American.
There was a thread about this in the US supporters forum a while back, when we were discussing the prospect of an away match in Havana. I'll see if I can dig it up...

    Edit: Here's the thread.

If you fly from Mexico or Canada, you'll be fine. Cuba doesn't stamp passports. They staple an entry visa to your passport and they take it out when you leave.

As was discussed in the thread I linked to, that's getting harder to do.

I'm not worried about any of that. We are going through Tijuana. It is not mandatory to show passports when you reenter the country through the border, a birth certificate + drivers license works all the same. Also, were staying in Cancun for a few days.

Thanks for the Cuba vs US thread, I looked at it a while back but totally forgot about it.

Well...I went and it kicked ass. I'll share more about the trip later on.
