What other MLS teams transmit in HD? I know Comcast Mid-Atlantic's (DirecTV channel #629) production of DCU's home games are in HD, but I don't know of any other teams. Either way, this is still a positive step.
Anyone know the status of HD at Televisa from Mexico (the video source of all Mexican league matches on Univision/Telefutura)
DirecTV just added -1 HD channels (if the game is on 693, the HD version will be on 693-1) for all their MLS Direct Kick channels, and have the revs/red bull game scheduled for saturday night in HD.
my guide has been saying a good deal of programming is in HD when certain channels don't even have the capability. I noticed it on FSC also.
Re: Champions League Final in HD It looks like we'll be getting the Champions League Final in HD. TSN (in Canada) is advertsing the Final in HD, and someone on another forum reported that he got an email from ESPN confirming that the final will be in HD.
Re: Champions League Final in HD What i hate is that we have to be talking about this, like we have to beg these networks for HD. It should just be in HD, we shouldnt have to ask for it.
Re: Champions League Final in HD Well, again, it's not necessarily up to the local networks who broadcast it here (ESPN, TSN, etc.). If they're not offered an HD feed by the production company in Russia, then they can't show it here. And while HD has grown a lot in the past year, in a lot of parts of the world it's not as commonplace as in North America. FWIW, if you go here and scroll down to May 21st, it does appear that the CL final is listed in HD.
Re: Champions League Final in HD It turns out that some of the Euro 2008 matches will not be in HD in the USA, simply due to the fact that ESPN2-HD is only one channel, and sometimes two matches are simultaneous (copied from a post in another Forum, and I have no idea if the information is accurate - it's obviously incomplete):
Some more brand new info on who has what in HD for those considering satellite: The only possible direct soccer impact to the above are: - ESPNews in HD for Euro 2008 highlights - Comcast Sports Network in HD in the two missing locations, in case you follow the Revolution or Earthquakes. - Possible Olympics coverage on USA-HD, CNBC-HD and/or Bravo-HD
Can anyone confirm that the C/L final is really truly going to be in HD one ESPN2 HD next Wednesday? I was looking at the ESPN schedule and I thought that in the past the listing for C/L games on ESPN2HD does not have "HD" on the end of it. For next week's game it does indeed say "HD". Can anyone confirm or deny? No guessing, no conjecture, facts only!
perhaps you're just not aware, but 720p is actually more suited to sports and frame for frame is actually a higher resolution than 1080i. 1080i only draws half of it's lines each frame, leading to each frame being only 540 lines of resolution, where 720p is 720 lines of resolution. 1080i draws every other line of the picture, and when you see fast motion in 1080i you can see jittering and blocking. 720p does not suffer from the jittering at all because it draws every line every frame. For movies and news and tv shows I would always prefer 1080i for extreme clarity (which it only has in non-moving shots) but for sports and fast motion I would prefer 720p (until 1080p becomes used in broadcasting)
There is one more direct soccer impact. To make room for these channels Dish Network removed all of the Voom channels including WorldSport HD which featured 1 spanish game per week. Also, the revolution aren't carried on Comcast SportsNet, they are on local over the air channel 38, and not HD. Also the quakes games on Comcast SportsNet aren't HD either. With the loss of WorldSport HD Dish network no longer has ANY soccer advantage over DirecTV, and DirecTV clearly has the HD advantage over dish, as dish has no room for any more HD channels than their current 60, and DirecTV has another whole SATELLITE they can use to supplement their already superior 106 HD channels (not counting HD pay per views)
106 HD Channels on DIrectTV? And 60 on Dish? DirecTV's website says 95, and DirecTV's (yes DirecTV's) website says 73 for Dishnetwork....Dishnetwork is currently advertising over 100 National HD Channels by years end. And the reason DirecTV has 20 or so more HD channels right now, is because they get a lot more subscription channels in HD. Dishnetworks VIP 722 HD-DVR is also the highest rated DVR at CNET.Com with a 8.7 vs DirecTV's HR20 with a 7.4 rating. And finally most Dishnetwork channels broadcast in 1440x1080, vs DirecTV's 1280x1080. But yah, the fact that Dish no longer gets WorldSportHD is probably reason enough as to why I may switch to DirecTV when my contract is up in a couple months.
DirecTV has far more HD RSN's that help pad their number. One of the main reasons I'd never go to DISH is because they refuse to carry YES. Actually all of the new HD channels DirecTV has added since last year are MPEG4 channels, and they're already moved over a number of the old MPEG2 channels to MPEG4. There are about only 4 or 5 HD stations still broadcasting on MPEG2, all the rest are now MPEG4. D11, they're new satellite they launched in March will broadcast all HD channels in MPEG4 as well.
It should be noted that all of DirecTV's mpeg4 channels are full resolution 1920x1080 for 1080i and 1280x720 for 720p. I have a favorites list set up to only show HD channels and it has 114 channels in it. It is counting my locals, the 5 MLS Direct Kick HD's and all the regional sportsnets (pro sports get blacked out, college and repeats don't). It is not counting pay per view channels. Directv's website was counting the voom channels in dish's full count of channels because that section of the site was written before it was made apparent that dish got rid of 15 channels to make room for the new ones.
Sorry but DirecTV's channels are either 1280x720 or 1280x1080 And sure Dish got rid of the Voom channels, but they added even more HD channels in the process Dishnetwork will have 100+ channels by the end of the year. They are also using MPE4, but MPEG4 does not necessarily = 1920x1080.

A few still are, but ALL the new channels they've been adding since September of 2007 ARE MPEG4 channels. NOT MPEG 2 like you're claiming. D* has been migrating the MPEG2 stations over to MPEG4, ALL HD channels will be MPEG4 by the end of the year if not sooner. DirecTV will have over 100+ HD channels by the end of the summer, since DirecTV 11 was launched in March and it's almost set it in its orbit it should be broadcasting by August, if not sooner. ALL HD channels on that WILL be MPEG4. Whether it's 1920x1080 or 1280x720, they're still MPEG4.
I have heard this in a couple places but every time an MSG HD feed of a red bulls game is on Direct Kick (live) it is indeed the HD feed because it has the special MSG HD sidebars, but the game itself is still 4:3 and standard definition. You're right that MPEG4 does not mean full resolution in the big scheme of video compression, but on DirecTV all MPEG4 channels are available at full resolution. You have bad information. When DirecTV only had 8 HD channels and they were only MPEG2 they were lower resolution. Those 8 channels still are (for the next few months) but the remaining channels are definitely full resolution HD. Many people doubt the 100+ channels promised by Dish Network or at least doubt the quality they will be getting because they recently launched a satellite to hold those channels that failed to reach orbit and did not have a backup on hand. Instead while they build a backup and launch it, it is speculated that if they add new HD channels they will be bitstarving them and the existing ones, as well as running the resolutions down on all of their HD and SD channels to make room. I'm in the industry and know what I am talking about.
