Get in there! 2 goals and a clean sheet. By gad, we needed that. If anybody deserved a break today, it was Kuijt. And hats off to the whole of Anfield tonight. What a cracking atmosphere. Best in a 'coon's age, as they.

Sorry, I'll disagree with most here about Materazzi. Both yellows may have looked soft but were after a series of cynical, tug-the-shirt-as-the-player-is-about-to get-into-his-stride fouls. He wasn't trying to play football at all. That said, the referee was gash-- there was one particular instance when Cruz deliberately tried to barge into Babel, tripped over his own feet and won a free kick. But I don't care; he'll answer to his bosses. Now for black nectar.

The first was a simple clash of legs, no intention, freekick but no yellow.

Second one, i think, Materazzi was foolish to put his arm on Torres' shoulder, but still Torres didnt cover himself in glory, falling to his knees a while after the contact was made. But still, Materazzi's reputation goes before him. Happened at the WC too. If that was Samuel, i doubt it wouldve been a yellow, though Samuel wouldnt have been so foolish.

as for Cosmo Kramer Materazzi: I understood the first card -- he'd taken down Torres three times in less than 12 minutes; second card was more surprising -- did The Mouth say the wrong thing, something like "Mr Referee, he goes down quicker than your wife did last night"

After watching both replays again, he was much unlucky; I take it all back. The referee was dire, though.

On a point of curiosity, what is Inter's first choice central defensive pairing? I ask because quite often we (Liverpool) are accused of not knowing our best team.

I think the first was the ref losing patience and a build-up of continual fouls by Inter because we were pressuring them.

The second looked like he grabbed his shoulder and pulled him back, so I have no qualms with the second. It was unlucky for him that he got the first before that.

You saw it tonight, Materazzi and Cordoba though a fit Walter Samuel should give Materazzi a run, at the very least he isn't prone to stupid mistakes like Materazzi today.

I thought Cordoba had a fine game today and when he went off I thought the chances of keeping a clean sheet dived drastically.

Same here- I was very relieved as a Red to see him go off, as it made our job easier. Any news on the injury yet?

he was terrible, shouldve given you guys a penalty too i thought for Vieira's handball (who incidentally, was utter shite!). But good display, Rafa got his tactics spot on, and you guys were on top even before the sending off.

And like the other guy said, Samuel and Cordoba.

    FINALLY...something to be happy about...
First of all, that red card was an atrocious call and we should have been given, at least, one PK.
The boys started fantastic, full force and took it to Inter - I loved that.
Negatives - our fullbacks were useless in their crossing - very disappointed in Finnan.
Kuyt you lucky, lucky, lucky dog - 1-0
    Fantastic shot by Gerrard 2-0.
Majority of goals Inter concede and we score come in the last 15 mins.
What a great setup for the game in Milan - there will be goals:D.

anyone else catch the post-match interview?

avoided giving credit to Rafa specifically

is Gerrard just being as neutral as possible or what?

It's reeeeeeeeally hard to diss Kuijt after he smacks that goal. Perfect execution of a bang-it-into-the-turf strike. Gerrard and his seeing-eye goal, thru 19 legs and inside the post. Amazing.

The thing I liked about the match is that Inter had almost no real chances except for the Cambiaso shot. It probably won't be like that at the San Siro, and I expect Vieira to play a bigger role, but it's pretty encouraging.

Materazzi prolly didn't deserve the red card, but Vieira's hand ball wasn't called.

I hope Ivan Cordova isn't hurt too badly. He's a quality back.

Fantastic game. Dominated from start to finish, smashing goals at the death! Inter's game was beyond dirty. Disgusting!
Hope all goes well next round at the San Siro.

Just to clear up - his first foul was not for a yellow, his second was...but since it's Materazzi, who gives a damn:D.

Why all this bulshit about the red card..???

You get a redcard for taking your shirt off to celebrate.
You get a redcard for kicking the ball away when a throw or free kick is called.
You get a redcard for spiking the ball if you don't like the call.
You get a redcard for disagreeing with the linsman.

And among the many many other reasons for getting a yellow card for is pulling a player back who is totally embarrassing you for speed.....or lack thereof.

I have no sypathy at all with the big wooden bastard. Torres may not have been in a shooting lane right then but he was behind the defense with support.

I watched 3 matches today and saw a yellow card dished out when all the guy did was take the ball away from another player, the player rolled on the ground until he got the foul and a yellow. Nice camera work showed no contact plainly.

If you guys want to change the laws of Association Football, to make it legal, to pull a player back who has just blown by you, then petition FIFA.....Don't come bitching here.

the first yellow was marginal. foul, yes. free kick, yes. card, no. the second had to be given because it was a bookable foul. but i really don't think the first yellow, that early in the match, had to be given. a severe ticking, but a card?

btw, you cant spel whin your made. ;)

ps: i think Materazzi is a clod. he would have gotten a red card eventually.

Great result and it puts us in the driving seat. Amazingly I have read some newspaper reports about Liverpool and Rafa this evening and the rotation of 5 players since the last game by Rafa has not been mentioned! Outrageous! Can they not see how awful it is to change a team's lineup. Oh wait, Mancini rotated again as well so that is why Inter lost! ;)

    Using stupid logic...Barnsley > Inter :D

They say watching Barnsley is like watching Brazil. Watching Inter is like watching Argentina! Whereabouts in Buenos Aires do Inter play their home games?

It's only half-time but Liverpool have shocked Europe again and beaten the 'bestest team in all of Europe and the entire World' in the last 16. Last year it was Barca and this year it is Inter. Of course Liverpool knocked out Barca but have not actually done so to Inter. We must respect Inter and realise we are not through to the QF's yet. The San Siro will be a tough venue for us but if we defend well we will knock Inter out. If we score 1 goal then they will need 4.

Inter are an incredibly strong side and have an awesome squad. However their 29 match unbeaten run was ended at Anfield. Gerrard scored his 50th goal at Anfield and the much maligned Kuyt scored a goal described by Lampard as a perfectly executed shot.

It was ironic that a former Evertonian was sent off at Anfield to help give Liverpool a famous win that will reverberate around Europe.

Anyway, let's go to Argentina and finish the job and get to the last 8.

    And Allez Lyons!

    classy words from cesar...

    from goal.com:

"We held up until five minutes from the end, and we were unlucky too. For their first goal the ball would have finished in my hands if it hadn't deflected off Maicon.

"Compliments to Gerrard for the second, but I have to say that Chivu covered my vision a bit. I spoke about it with him at the end, but if Cristian hadn't made that sliding interception at the end, there would probably have been a second own goal.

"It's a pity, because with ten men we played an almost perfect match. They held the ball up well but only had one chance through Torres.

"Unfortunately that deflection off my friend Maicon changed a game which could have finished in a draw. "

    Torres A Diver

He concluded by speaking of Marco Materazzi's sending off for two bookable offences.

"Materazzi's bookings? Torres dived for the first yellow," he said, mincing no words for the Spanish striker.

"The booking was undeserved and the second was excessive. Marco is sad now and I understand him."

    .................

let me sum up -- the loss is to be blamed on maicon, chivu and torres, apparently...

well made up for the lads. Almost makes me wanna moove back to Liverpool!!

What an atmosphere it seemed like at the pitch, haven't heard it like that for a while.

Who needs the premier league? You dont get that kind of excitement or nervous stomach farts from a PL match!

Tactically, i thought our tactics were a bit off today. But Rafa's way is possession football and it worked on the scoresheet at the end of the day.

Everyone seemed to play 'out of their skin' for the first 20 minutes which caused the italians to revert to hitmen.

How f'ing quick are babels feet? JEEZUS! In the first half were he breezed by 4 of inters players by dribbling right through them, i hope thats a taste of things to come. Made it look easy.... then he did a shit pass right to them...

Couldnt be happier for Kuyt. Was going to post mid game and say that nothing seems to go right for him, eg, when you kick it at the opposing player, and it goes out for a corner.. When he tries that, it seems to bounce of the guys legs into one of his teamates. 2 goals in last 2 matches, and you saw him smile at the end, haven't seen that for a while.

    ALL IN LADS!

ps, how fucking classy is cesar, he should be shot.
