Preston North End have had an improved offer of $3 million rejected by the MLS.

Preston are in a false position and play some excellent football under their new coach of Alan Irvine, who is very highly respected in the English game and is renowned for improving players on the training ground.

This is a deal which could have benefited the American National team because the standard of the Championship is improving each season as teams drop from the Premier League with extra finance and stronger squads and the MLS really need to have a second thought on this one because the decision would be crucial, not only for the player, but it would be beneficial for the strength of the American National team and it is ultimately the success of the National team which has a filtering effect on the popularity of each Nations domestic League tournament.

This is not terribly shocking, given what happened with Noonan this past week. Although I have a lot of sympathy for Twellman, who may truly be missing out on the chance of a lifetime, I will be very, very surprised if the Revs sell him at this point.

tell me, how is the quality of English football, especially that of the Coca-Cola Championship, benefitting the English National Team?

Let it be a lesson to all the young kids, do not sign a contract with MLS. Try USL or other 2nd, 3rd divisions around the world.

Or if you do, make sure your agent is smart enough to get you a buy out clause should you get into a situation like twellman

    Great.

So how would this benefit an organization which doesn't know how to spend money to acquire players?

Or, more accurately, don't sign a 4 year contract if you're interested in transferring less than a year later!
Let's not forget that Twellman played at a good club in Germany - probably better than PNE. This would be his 2nd chance of a lifetime.

Or more more accurately, don't sign a 4 year contract when you have been in the top scoring last couple of years and getting some Nat looks, that does not have written in an escape clause, a sell-threshold clause, or make sure your agent is not Darren Lamb.

Not that it really matters because the Revs dont get all the money and dont spend the money they do get to improve the team in any way, but I wouldnt start considering this until it got to 5 million dollars and up. He's to valuable to the team and league to give him up for less when your selling EJ for 6(I know his younger, but still.)

I think it's tough to put a $$ value on him because he is sort of a unique player. Fringe national teamer, proven American (MLS) goalscorer, and locked into a lon-term deal.

I think the only way the Revs can afford to let him go is if they already have someone lined up to replace him....and the odds of that happening aren't very good.

I'm not sure that "escape clauses" are on the table. Is there any other MLS player with such a clause in his contract?

Everybody, well said. You would think that his agent would have included a buyout clause. Don't they teach this in Agent 101. Like someone said leading scorer for the team two years in a row and playing for the NT and being exposed to all the world might get you interest from other teams. I just do not get it. Well if I'm him, I would take care of myself not to get injured and play lousy so that I get fired. That would surely be my payback, even if I don't ever play again.

It was reported that Eddie Johnson had a "MLS must accept a transfer offer over $x.y million dollars" clause. Not strictly an escape clause, but you get the picture...

I know he had a buyout clause, where if the transfer fee was $XX, he actually has paid off the league and still made a good amount of the transfer fee.

yeah he bought out the remaining year of his contract and then kept the difference on the transfer fee for himself.
