    LA - Herbalife
    RSL - Xango
    Houston - Amigo Energy
    Chivas - Comex
    New York - Red Bull
    Chicago - Best Buy
    Columbus - Glidden
    Toronto - BMO

I believe these teams could use an extra $2 mil a year:

    New England
    DC United
    Kansas City
    San Jose
    FC Dallas
    Colorado

DC will have one in short order.
They did not clear the 3 stripes off the 2008 jersey for nothing. I'd think
    Dallas might too.

Something tells me New England or Kansas City will be the last to make a deal.

Do you mean at the beginning of the 2008 season or at the end of the 2008 season?

At the beginning I think only DC will have added a sponsor. By the end, perhaps other teams can convince companies that its the way to go and add some sponsors.

I think for 2008, we will see DC United 1st, Dallas 2nd, San Jose 3rd, and Kansas City at the end of the season at 4th! I think Seattle may seriously have a sponsor before Colorado and New England...

It's a damn shame, but true. I think the Revs will be the last to get a sponsor. No SSS, no shirt sponsor and players abandoning ship. Maybe its time for Kraft to sell the Res.

It's a shame that the Revs are not going to sell out and have a cheesey sponsor on their shirt? I think that is awesome. I agree they do need their on SSS. Why would you want the richest owner out of the league? I'm not trying to chap your ace but I am not a fan of the sponsor crap. I understand it brings in money but is it worth it?

Could someone posts how much money the league/teams make off shirt sponsors?

    $2mil/yr

thats the salary cap, or its the salary of your designated player

if i was a gm, i'd take a shot at getting a shirt sponsor

    plus...

with mls increasing in value, the $2mil/yr could go up as well

if you take that into account, maybe kraft is waiting for the price to increase to find the right sponsor

From what I hear the Rapids are looking around and are gaining intrest from some companies. No word on who they are, but it was mentioned we will get one hopefully by mid season. If not sooner....

Elsewhere on BS, I seem to recall a mockup of an 08 Rapids jersey that had no sponsor but no wordmark either. IMHO, it looked really sharp (for lack of team wordmark, not the lack of sponsor). Are they intending to go blank until a sponsor is gotten, or will they have the team wordmark?

Fair enough but do you really want to see Pine-Sol United on the front of your shirts?

The Rapids workmark is put on the kits by a local company, so odds are you saw a jersey that didn't come from the Rapids FO and came from Adidas or the league office. The jersey that Burciaga wore in the Nothing but Nets promotion and the jersies that Telefutura has for their set don't have the Rapids wordmark, because they didn't come from the batches the Rapids FO had modified.

We will either be last or 2nd to last. What business sense would it make for someone to shell out $2 million for space on a jersey you can basically only find online and at the stadium?

Can Chivas fans get Comex shirts yet? Will Columbus be selling Glidden ones? Doesn't make a lot of sense to have a sponsor but not be able to buy the jersey...

Doesn't make sense for Kraft to sell. He could never make the money he's lost on the team since '96 back. He owns the building. The team fills in a space between concerts and the Patriots. Like it or not, he's not going anywhere unless someone with incredibly deep pockets materializes on Route One.

Maybe a team can get ALPO to sponsor a shirt, for old times sake.

First of all MLS cannot, and I repeat, cannot be turning down money in any form. Second part of the reason why jersey sponsors have become such a big business in soccer is in part because of lack of commercial timeouts.

Thirdly the potential for sponsorships as the league grows is astronomical. Eg. AIG is paying Manchester Utd. over 100mil over 5 years. Yeah,... it's worth it.
