I think Ianni will definitely be on the senior roster this year. Would be surprised to see another F show up-but probably from another team
This brings up some interesting questions on MLS rules. Ianni I think will have to take up a senior spot based on age. However, Ashe is still young enough to qualify for a development spot. Plus, with his salary last year we would have to more than double it to move him to the senior roster. Is there any other distinction beyond age? If not, he would be a development spot. The net result is the same, we have three spots open if Nate returns and four spots if he does not (with one of those going to a GK). Can anyone shed some official light on Senior versus Development roster? I thought it was just age and defined salary minimums.
Thanks for starting a new thread - I was going to do that, but wanted to start with the thread from last year so everyone could see the background on the roster from a year ago. Troutseth - as for Ianni, he is still young enough to be a Developmental roster/Generation Adidas guy. The issue with him is that there is supposedly some regulation that once a Gen Adidas guy has played a certain amount during a season, he has to be promoted to the senior roster. What I can't find anywhere are the specifics on how much playing time that would be. For your comments on Ashe, he was on the senior roster last year, and he made the minimum salary ($30,000). (for more information on players salaries, go here ). Yes, Houston could move Ashe back to a developmental roster spot if they want to (he has to agree, but if he doesn't agree they can always cut him). To answer your question about Senior versus developmental, here are the basics: Each team gets to have 18 guys on the Senior roster, and 10 guys on the Developmental Roster. They don't have to fill all of the slots. Developmental roster guys have to be 24 years old or younger during the calendar year (except goalkeepers, they can be 25), and they get paid peanuts - $12,900 for most developmental roster guys, and $17,700 for the "senior developmental roster" guys, I think there can be 3 of them. Also, young guys who signed with MLS before finishing college and are called "Generation Adidas" players count against the Developmental Roster. MLS signs these guys to contracts, and they can be paid very well - Ianni was signed to a contract that pays him $70,000 guaranteed and up to $103,000 with incentives. Senior roster guys are everyone else - the minimum salary is $30,000 and the maximum is $325,000 (except for Designated Players spots). One other distinction, the developmental contracts can be terminated any time, and the guys only get paid during the season from what I have learned. Senior roster contracts go year round.
If Ianni is changed to a senior roster spot does that mean that his salary will start counting against the cap?
If anyone really wants to learn the MLS roster and salary restrictions, play Worldwide Soccer Manager. I'm not kidding, that game has everything down to a T and it's how I learned all the minute details of roster and salary restrictions in MLS. The most recent version still distinguishes between SI and YI but other than that, it's exactly accurate. Sadly, I've never had to deal with the Gen Adidas question so I can't say if Ianni is eligible to be Gen Adidias based on his minutes played or not. That said, dynamofan pretty much gave the perfect explanation.
wow...had a crazy team last night. Waibel traded for allocation $$$$ + draft pics and Ianni moves to the starting spot. Then team announces they had a press conference coming up in a few days. Thing was that we all thought the press conference was about the Waibel trade and not about the announcement of a DP signing to the team and the date construction of the new stadium would break ground. but i'll continue dreaming.....
everyone keeps talking about this game-gimme some cliff notes. Can you get in at any time or are their leagues that you play with others? How much time are we talking to do a good simulation?
Thanks for the explanation . . . I could not find the actual regulation on Gen Ad players moving to the Senior roster. I DID find a wiki post that does not show him as a Gen Ad guy anymore as of last year. So if this is accurate It would seem he moved to the Senior Roster last year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Adidas
Cliff notes version...I'll try. You don't play with other people. The other teams decisions' are simmed by the game. You decide what leagues you want available to you to work in and it has every league in the world...even some of the non pro leagues in England. You can either start unemployed and take whatever job you can get as it becomes available or you can start as manager of whatever team you want. That said, if you start as manager of a superclub, you will have very little room for error from the board and the fans. As far as time, it's not that bad really. I started unemployed and eventually got a job with the LA Galaxy in August 07 when they fired Yallop (I know, I felt unclean doing so but beggars can't be choosers) and now I'm in June 09. I've signed a contract till the end of 2010 but I'm really hoping a team from Europe comes and gets me before then. Getting that far took me about 24 hours of game time for me but it could be less if you don't obsess as much as me. All I will say is that it is VERY in depth and initially, it might take some time to familiarize yourself with certain aspects of the game.
Nah, just 20s and d% dice. Waibel's elbow does 3d12 damage. Alexi Lalas says 2d4 stupid things a day to the press. Jose Mourinho can take 10 and still always pass his gamesmanship check. Dom can cast "Summon Corey Ashe" as a standard action 4 times a day.
I have been wanting to check that game out but wasn't sure because there is no actual footy play, is that correct? Plus you can manage in games like Pro Evolution and FIFA so...
Well, you can watch the games and make detailed tactical adjustments during the game but you don't control the players they way you do in FIFA 08. You can't really compare FIFA 08 to WSM because they are two different games. The management portion of Pro Evolution and FIFA 08 is nothing like the management of WSM. But if you want actual footy play and do crazy ball tricks and supergoals by pressing L+R+L+R+Up+Up+Down+Down then WSM isn't for you. If you want to build a new stadium for the Dynamo, take them to the CCC and eventually, World Club Championship, by making trades, draft picks, tactics, etc. then it is. It's as close to being Oliver Luck and Dominic Kinnear as you can possibly get. More Kinnear than Luck though. Anyway, this thread has gotten waaaay off topic. Back to the 2008 roster.
Holy crap - should I feel ashamed for understanding every bit of this post? Jeez, it reads exactly like I remember some of those letters in "Dragon" Magazine all those years ago...
So here's the update based on Jaqua leaving, and the expectation of the new keeper being signed: Senior Roster Onstad, Unnamed Keeper from England/Scotland - GK Barrett, Robinson, Waibel, Boswell - D Mulrooney, Clark, DeRosario, Mullan, Davis, Holden, Ashe - M Ching, Wondo - F 4 open spots, but the new keeper will fill one of them. A second one may be filled by Ianni. Developmental Roster Ianni, Steve Wondo, Chabala, Ebert - D Hayden, Ustruck, Cameron, Barlow, Alcarez, Hall - M Thompson, Georgeff - F 12 guys competing for 9 slots (the 10th development spot will be used for a third keeper) As for salary cap, here's a summary of the changes (I used the guaranteed compensation numbers for each guy, as that is what counts against the cap from what I understand): Out: Cochrane ($51,149) Ngwenya ($51,148) Jaqua ($112,500) Dalglish ($96,000) Wells ($50,400) In: Boswell ($30,870) Ianni ($70,000) --> if he graduates Gen Adidas, he moves to the senior roster and his salary counts against the cap Net change: -$330,327 (if Ianni is not promoted) -$260,327 (if Ianni is promoted to senior roster) Note that all of this is based on last year's salaries, so there will likely be some increases for Boswell and Ianni. So, that means Houston either has $330,327 for 4 senior roster spots, or $260,327 for 3 senior roster spots, depending on the Ianni situation. As I posted in the Jaqua thread, I really can't see them using the money to promote any of the developmental players to the senior roster (other than Ianni), given the fact that none of them have ever been in a match. But, if that is a direction that Dom wants to go, then you'd have to guess that maybe someone like Chabala might get a chance to get a senior roster spot.
Thanks for the cap work dynamofan. My guess is they take the cap money and try to get a couple of $100K forwards and see if they can coach 'em up or if a change of scenery helps. I could also see them waiting until the summer to try and get one more expensive guy to kind of do what Dalglish did a few years ago.
Ok, I've seen lots of comments about how much worse the team is now than it was in the previous couple of years. I'm not sure I agree, if you compare the team as it was at the end of January the past two years to what it is now, I'm not sure I see anything that says things are that much worse this year. The key is that you have to compare it at this time of year - Dom and the Dynamo have made moves during the year the past couple of years, and there's no reason to believe that they won't do that again. 2006 Houston Dynamo Senior Roster Pat Onstad Zach Wells (newly traded from New York, for Jon Conway) Craig Waibel Wade Barrett Chris Aloisi Kevin Goldthwaite Eddie Robinson Kelly Gray Dwayne Derosario Ricardo Clark Brian Mullan Brad Davis Danny O'Rourke Brian Ching Alejandro Moreno Ronald Cerritos Chris Wondolowski Development Roster and Draftees Ryan Cochrane - Gen Adidas Julian Nash - Developmental Tighe Dombrowski - Developmental Robby Fulton - Developmental Bret Rodriguez - Developmental Aaron Lanes - Developmental Patrick Ianni - 2006 draft Andre Schmid - 2006 draft Mike Chabala - 2006 draft Mpho Moloi - 2006 draft Tony Donatelli - 2006 draft Hector Guzman - 2006 draft Josh Fender - 2006 draft In Feb 2006, Houston acquired Marcus Storey for a draft pick In Mar 2006, Houston traded Danny ORourke for Adrian Serioux In April 2006, Houston signed Stuart Holden, and traded for rights to Martin Hutton In September, Houston signed Paul Dalglish 2007 Houston Dynamo Senior Roster Pat Onstad Zach Wells Craig Waibel Wade Barrett Kevin Goldthwaite Eddie Robinson Kelly Gray Dwayne Derosario Ricardo Clark Brian Mullan Brad Davis Brian Ching Alejandro Moreno Ronald Cerritos Chris Wondolowski Paul Dalglish Ryan Cochrane Developmental Roster/Draftees Pat Ianni - Gen Adidas Mpho Moloi - Dev Mike Chabala - Dev Martin Hutton - Dev Marcus Storey - Dev Corey Ashe - Draft John Michael Hayden - Draft Nick Hatzke - Draft Eric Ebert - Draft Eric Ustruck - Draft Mike Sambursky - Draft Justin Douglass - Draft During the 2007 year, the following roster moves were made: Signed Jordan James (around March/April) Traded Goldthwaite and draft pick for Mulrooney (April) Traded Moreno for Ngwenya (May) Traded Gray for Jaqua (July) Waived Ronald Cerritos (August) OK, so I wanted to make two major points. First, the Dynamo have made several significant roster moves in the past two years between February and September. How many of you even remembered that Holden was not signed until April in 2006? Second, if you compare the roster right now to the roster the past two years at the end of January, I don't believe the argument that our roster in previous years was that much stronger. Even with the losses at forward, with the addition of Ashe last year, the breakout of Holden, and the continued development of Wondolowski, I could easily argue that having Ching, Wondo, Ashe and Holden as forward/offensive midfielders compared to having Ching, Dalglish, Moreno, Cerritos and Wondolowski last year is not that much different. As others have noted, having Holden frees up Mullan or DeRo to play forward, and either of them is as good, if not significantly better, than Moreno, Cerritos or Dalglish. So, everyone should just relax a little and give Dom and the team some time to make the roster moves that they need to make this year. And maybe this year Wondo and/or Ashe can really break out and contribute like Holden did last year.
The only problem with this is the fact that we are now out of Moreno/Gray type players to trade.... Guys who are getting significant playing time, but nobody is going to sweat losing them. Now a trade is almost certainly going to hurt, unless Dom can con someone into taking a couple of reserves/draft picks for someone who can contribute.
Thank you, this is the point I've been trying to make for a couple of days now. There's no fat left on the team to trim, only muscle or bone. The well has been gone till dry.
DYNAMOFAN . . . I responded in the Craig thread and I should have done it here . . . . so I will add it here and delete the other one: I think you are pretty close but it is more on the upper end of the range (and I think we have three spots open). I believe you counted a new keeper twice above unless you think we will carry three senior and one development. I have a spreadsheet (posted somewhere else) with all of last years salaries. The cap raise was a couple hundred grand . . before the signing of Craig we had about 400K and 4 spots open assuming Pat and Wondo both were on the senior roster (Pat was actually moved up last year I think - he no longer showed as a 2007 Gen Ad). If you assume 50K we should have about 350K open and three spots. Now I do not know what BM got as a raise and if there were any contract raises (only those under 60K are given auto raises), so your 330K sounds pretty close with the chance to add three players (we do not have to use them all). We also have the DP and 6 international spots open for trade (potentially allocation money).
