I was looking into buying a USA jersey, especially now that they're on sale at ussoccer.com and worldsoccershop, presumably because the new jerseys will be unveiled soon.

My question is related to players changing their jersey number. I know Landon Donovan used to wear 21 and now wears 10. I want to get an Altidore jersey and Wikipedia says he's worn #14 for his two senior team call ups. What are the chances of him changing his number? It wouldn't be that big of a deal to have a kit with his old number, but it got me thinking and I was wondering how often it happens.

Jozy wore 17 in africa and 14 last week.

Donovan will always be 10, Adu wears 25 but in a world cup or confed cup numbers can only go up to 23 so i guess he'll have 11 unless ching is there which i doubt.

Dempsey is 8 but has worn 2 but 8 iam sure will be his for now.

Johnson is 9, Beasley is 7 and Edu seems to have 19, 6 and 16 i think.

Bradley is 4 and benny wears 5.

The jersey number changing thing is annoying but with so many possibilities for the team it is hard to set any number in stone other than donovan. I bought a Kenny Cooper #19 after that Denmark game last year (lol). The problem is i like buying the jerseys of more abscure players and they are the ones who have to play musical chairs with their numbers.

Even if Bradley becomes more of a playmaker on the national team, you think Donovan will keep #10?

I think our expectations for Bradley are becoming a bit high...

I don't think so - he is always exceeding our expectations. :)

    hahaha....

yea i think landon's got dibs on #10.

but in a major competition, IF mastroeni is playing, i think he has dibs on #4. then bradley, #6. unless cherundolo is playing. haha. our numbers are all over the place.

kinda like DMB and #17 and 7 whenever lewis is or isn't playing.

but heck. michael bradley's scoring so many goals now...give him the #9.

its a positional thing too, the traditional DM number is 4. And 10 is usually your playmaker goalscorer type.

I've only been watching highlights, so I don't have a great idea of his position thoughout the game, but it seems like Bradley is become more of an attacking mid, not sure if he's a playmaker, but if so, wouldn't he deserve the #10?

    maybe for some teams.

but with the U.S.'s team, the numbers are pretty much "claimed" by the player, and landon pretty much has dibs on #10.

unlike, say, england, where the starting lineup is numbered 1-11, the position doesn't dictate the number for the U.S.

so like i said earlier, our numbers are all over the place. dempsey's worn 2, a traditional rb number, several times while our rb wears 6.

    all teams are different.

i just bought the USA L/S Blue jersey from us soccer store. I got an Altidore one and put #17 on the back..

    reasons for this include
    - he wears 17 for RBNY
    - he wore 17 for his first cap in South Africa and so even if his number changes, you can say you were there from the beginning (his first senior team cap)
    - conrad and spector have both worn #17 for the senior team in the past, so we'll see what happens but i got 17 cuz i can say I was here from the beginning

i may be wrong, but someone told me it is picked on number of caps a player has. whoever has the most caps picks the first number, then the next and so on. that is why eddie lewis gets 7 over beasley, because lewis has more caps. did anyone else hear this?

I might do the same. Still undecided about which color jersey to buy, but it will definitely be long sleeve. I'm also concerned about the size.

I tried on a medium at the USA/Sweden game and it seemed to fit, but I had a lot of layers of clothes on (it was tried on top of a hoodie I was wearing). The sizing chart makes me think small is the correct size based on height, (I'm 5'7), but the same chart says I'd be medium based on waist (32). So confusing. I might go with small since I prefer the Taylor Twellman fit. I bought a large Galaxy jersey and realized after I had taken the tag off (stupid me) that it was way too big. Don't want a repeat of that.

That's exactly right. That's why Donovan wore #21 whenever Reyna was in the squad, and #10 when Reyna was not there. Similarly, before Donovan, Reyna wore #21 whenever Ramos was in the squad, and #10 when Ramos was absent.

yeah i bought the medium.....i am about 5'11 or maybe 6'0 feet and the medium seems to fit great...it is a bit long in the sleeves but not too much to feel uncomfortbale and it should fit for a long time...idk if this helps or not

Yes, that helps. I'm 5'7 so small is probably the best fit for me. Thanks.

God no. Just because a midfielder scores a lot of goals doesn't make him a #10... If you look at Bradley's goals, they aren't really based on situations relying on his creativity. Michael Bradley is not a playmaker, people, in its accepted definition in the footballing world. He's a holding mid who has the tactical awareness to know when to get forward and finish off chances. That doesn't make him a #10.

And I haven't even addressed the seniority issue in determining player numbers, which many others have already discussed.

I don't know where you get your jersey's. I am 5' 8" 155lbs ish and i have two medium jerseys and they are taylor twellman esq. How could the sleeves be too long? This doesn't make any sense.
