After 11 years of MLS soccer in KC, are people finally starting to realize the value, much less the name? I know among us, the recognition of the sport is an intense topic, and the KC Star and now the community is starting to see it as a viable entertainment option. But then i see something like this, pointed out to me by a fellow season ticket holder: http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_8049376 ...and it stings a little bit again...
I would suggest that we flood the e-mail address of this paper letting them know about their flub. The e-mail address I found was feedback@dailynews.com . The articles author is Lindsay Czarnecki. Have at it.
I saw something with this on Ryan McMahen the other day. Some bio of his from a library in northern Illinois (his home town?) said he was selected in the draft by the Kansas City Monarchs. I emailed them. Not sure if they changed it. I sent an email for this dailynews story above - it's probably better to use the email link at the bottom of the page as it adds the subject. Here's her email addy: lindsay.czarnecki@dailynews.com
I have never understood this type of mistake. Especially from PEOPLE WHO COVER SPORTS IN A TOWN THAT HAS A TEAM IN MLS.
I sent an e-mail. How ridiculous. I can almost understand not knowing the name of an MLS team if you dont follow the league but she put in the name of an NBA team!
I sent an e-mail as well. I compared her error to having the LA Kings hockey team called the Sacramento Kings. I also asked them if they had anyone who proofread the stories before they were posted. We'll see if they do anything about it.
I would say that as someone who admittedly disrespected the Wizards for years and has now has become a Wizards fan, that they're gaining respect. I have even recruited 2 people to the Wizards in the past few months, and it didn't take that much convincing to do it. I watched the SuperDraft and found it amazing that they were actually discussing a KC team before, during and after the draft(I realize that a lot of it had to do with having the #1 pick, but still ESPN usually loves to act like KC doesn't exist in any sport.) I love that there is so much communication between the fans and the actual team with things like BigSoccer and the new Hillcrest Road blog. It makes it very easy to start to fall for this team. I can't wait to attend my first MLS game March 28th. Also, more on subject: to hell with LA or even East Coast reporters, they don't respect the midwest, nor will they ever respect the midwest, so its for the best to just ignore anything they say about us.
Anytime my friends give me shit for watching the MLS or the Wizards this is the first thing I hit them with. Man, I remember sitting in the Cauldron at Arrowhead right next to the player entrance and high-fiving nearly every Wizard that came out of the tunnel. As a youth soccer player I was one of the kids they let line up outside of the tunnel that the players run through before the game. I remember screaming "I TOUCHED PREKI'S HAND!!" for about a week afterward. That combined with Robb Heinemann getting on BigSoccer and actually ASKING what the fans want to do with all the new changes.... you just can't get that level of intimacy with any team in any other professional sport.
Are we even sure we can tailgate? The actuall CAB parking is quite small, the rest is essentially The Legends Mall parking and I'm not sure open container drinking and kicking balls about the place will fit in like it did at Arrowshed.
This is sloppy journalism, and I can see how KC fans are rightly annoyed by it, but the article is essentially positive about soccer generally and MLS in particular. It says that players are psyched to be chosen for MLS and that being drafted #1 is a big honor and going to the Wizards is something to be proud of. On balance, this is a writer who respects soccer. So my suggestion is go easy with the correcting emails. I've written my fair share of articles about sporting events, and often someone writes in with an email that correctly identifies a marginal error. This can be done in a way that compliments the writer but points out the flaw, so that they are more likely to write good stuff about the team/sport in the future (e.g., "Liked your piece on the SuperDraft, but wanted to mention that the team is the KC, not Washington, Wizards."). It can also be done in a way that pisses off the writer and makes them disinclined to write positive stuff in the future ("Hey idiot, you obviously know nothing and disrespect soccer and MLS because you can't be bothered to even get your most basic facts straight"... etc.). I hope anyone who writes in chooses the latter route.
Well I could be up to my old pipe dreamery tricks, but am I remembering correctly that there was going to be a site in the parking lot set aside for WoaS tailgate? Also, tailgating is done by some fans at T-Bones games, and I can only presume suds are somehow involved in that. I kind of figured that was the biggest reason OG chose CAB was because you can legally serve alcohol (and presumably consume it in the parking lot) there.
As a matter of fact, that was one of the first things I asked on my first trip out to tour CAB. As Sam replied, we are still working out the details, but I don't anticipate any issue with having our tailgate per usual.
Yeah but what about everyone else's too. There were numerous 10's of pods about the asphalt oaisys a the Red Relic. In KC tailgating is a right of passage with sports and I'm sure home opener there will be some conflicts going on if the attendees suddenly can't because Legends decided to enforce code or something not our of the possibilities. If that did happen, some big ass hospitality tents could be erected as public drinking area's like many places do during St Paddy's day to extend their occupancy.
I received a reply to my e-mail: "I'm well aware of the mistake, thank you." I was not at all rude with my e-mail either. I was polite but firm. She must of gotten several e-mails regarding the issue.
Season Ticket holderswill be parking in the lot attached to CAB, and as far as I understand, tailgating will not be a problem there. Non Season Ticket holders will park in the Speedway lot just to the south of CAB. I would suspect that tailgating there will be fine as well. Of course, final word will need to come from Sam et. al.
None of the parking plans for CAB are finalized yet. That may be the plan as of today, but it's far from set in stone.
