In all the hoopla and movement of Yanks during the frantic winter transfer window I'm suprised Gooch's name has not popped up anywhere. Is there interest? From all accounts, he's rebounded from the nightmare (depending on who you ask) loan at Newcastle and is in fine form leading Standard 1 point from 1st place in the league table. It just strikes me as odd nothing has been rumored. Have clubs been turned off by his unsuccessful loan spell? Have clubs been interested but Standard have said no as they focus on winning the Juliper League? Am I correct he could leave on a free this summer? If this true makes not selling Gooch while they can get some cash seems odd as well. I wonder if his name pops up on deadline day. It wouldn't surprise me!

Edit: Standard's site say he's contracted thru '09

I was thinking about this as well, but it seems our question has been answered. No.

No links, no whimsical rumors, not a sniff. Either SL are the making the journalists in Belgium as irritated as Canales or he's not for sale/not garnering interest.

SL would be stupid to sell their best defender when they're having a very good season and battling for the title, but I'm still surprised we've not heard a peep. I don't think he was horrible (Newcastle is), he still didn't show well with Newcastle. The effected his play with the nats as well, but I think he played solid minus the OG against Brazil and Sweden. He seems to be back, but it seems those failures are the most poignant memories for big-3 league clubs.

I don't know, I'm in the same boat. He wasn't good with Newcastle, but good lord, Titus Bramble still has a job at Wigan (and had a hilarious blunder last weekend). Surely Gooch is good enough for Ligue 1, Bundesliga, or low-level EPL.

I hope so, for 2010's sake. You may not like Gooch, but we need a defender like him to make the next step to do damage in 2010.

almost posted a thread on this last week too, quite surprised his name hasn't popped up. It may have been a rough go in Newcastle, but he still is young and has the size and tools to play in the bigger leagues. I think he would be a nice fit in France, lower EPL teams, or Scotland. Even the CCC would be a step up from the Belgian league I would have to guess, as far as talent. But if he continues to show well this season then I'm sure his name will pop up more this summer......

While CCC mayb be a step up from the Jupilier League, CCC won't give him Euro competition. If Liege stay this high in the table they'd at least be in UEFA Cup, if they win the league, then it's CL.

He has the necessary physique to make it, but that spell at Newcastle really damaged his chances at getting to the top quickly. Liege won't sell him now, it would be a stupid move. Maybe in this window a year from now. Either way, I think it'll be a long torturous road back to top football for him.

After that Newcastle fiasco, Gooch stock has been adversely affected. Too bad:(

yea, too bad that was one of the worst calls in the tournament. A picture of the Koller goal may have been better. I just watched the Italy match again the other day, Gooch had a monstrous game against Toni. I realize Gooch isn't solid, he's very streaky, too much so for a starting CB, but he's capable of great games. It's nice to have a strong, tall, athletic CB for the WC. If Gooch can get a move in the Summer window and develop a bit the US MNT would be far better for it.

Well, that picture is actually from when Gooch's header just flew over the bar (which is why BmB and Deuce are in the pic) but your point is well put anyway.

That's actually a picture just after Gooch missed a header off of a corner. Notice McBride right next to him. And notice no Bocanegra behind Dempsey, where he would have been standing having just played a wonderful looping header high into the 18 . . .

If my eyes don't deceive me, I just saw Morrisey in a Chivas LA shirt, please confirm.

As far as Gooch is concerned, if he stays and plays prominently at SL and they stay near the top, he will get offers in the summer. But time is running out.

Terrible call. If anyone wants to relive the horror:

Hopefully it's the worst officiating mistake we ever see (called against us;)) in a US World Cup match. We had such bad luck in the last World Cup (red cards vs Italy, Beasley's goal called back, Gooch's penalty), hopefully we've got some good karma in the tank for 2010.

The Beasley call would have been a terrible noncall if not made, and the Mastro red was defensible (probably more so than the second yellow later in that match). The PK was the only putrid call against us.

The Smiths and Morrissey solo are acquired tastes, but if you think that the songs suck, you are just dead wrong. The man may be terminally depressed but there is not a better lyricist in the world.

When I first heard The Smiths, I thought, "Wow, what a great band, who is this f'ing buffoon singing?". Of course, it didn't take long for me to realize that Morrissey is a genius and I'm the buffoon.

Grab a copy of "Meat is Murder", "The Queen is Dead", or "Strangeways, Here We Come", give it some time, and you will be converted.

He's in a good place right now I think. Belgium is a beautiful country with a solid third/second-tier league. If he and his team keep up their competitive play, he will be playing in UEFA or even possibly the Champions League. If he were to leave I'd like to see him go to France to a mid-tier to top team, as he seems to be someone who needs to have a high comfort level to succeed and France wouldn't be a huge change for him. Let's let him relax, I mean all the interest from Real Madrid, Lyon, and Chelsea must have made him a little tense. :D

Shit, we should have a karma reserve tank for the Germany 2002 game. I don't think he's saying those were all bad calls. It just seemed like every 50/50 decision in the tournament went against us. The Beasley goal, the Mastro and Pope reds, the Gooch penalty, these are 50/50 calls, that could go any way during the run of play, they all went against us.

let's face it, the US should always go into the WC with the mindset that the whole world is against them. We need to be perfect, we're not going to get the calls Italy or Brazil get.

and I should've looked at the picture, I saw sad gooch and a trainwreck and assumed it was a reference to the penalty.

I'm not too concerned there's been no rumors this window, a little I guess, but if he's not moving in the Summer it's a sign that the Newcastle gig really hurt his chances with the big league clubs.

We need Gooch to be a solid starter, he's too talented physically, I just hope and pray he finds his head and keeps his hands down in the big games come 2010.

I'm not sure how accurate that is... I think he usually works an 'I' in there too with a 'Z' and the end. Something like:

This is one of the strangest, most random posts I've ever seen. I think it's safe to say that Gooch has a better track record in soccer than The Rock. I also think it's safe to assume that the poster was suggesting that we need a physical presence in the back, and Gooch most obviously fits that role as long as he keeps his blunders to a minimum. Was there an objective in this post?

if Dwanye can mandhandle Toni and Borgetti, and do pretty well against Ibra, not to mention make the Best XI in the Belgian league a few times, I'm all for The Rock to make a US MNT appearance.

You sir, have one of the dumbest posts in BS history, CONGRATS!!

That's what I was trying to convey. Those 50/50 calls always seem to go the wrong way in the most crucial moments. Sometimes I can't help but wonder if it's because we are perennial powers in the other major sports of the world (in which we're participants) such as basketball, track & field, tennis, and the Olympics. Soccer is their game and we're the world's only superpower and in a time when we've been dictating the international scene, they'll be damned to let us have soccer too. For the record, I'm not a crazy conspiracy theorist.

I still get worked up over the Germany game, but I have a really good feeling that we'll perform well if not in 2010 definitely in 2014. We'll put that karma to use!

As far as Gooch goes, moving to England was a poor idea. I feel he would have done much better in Italy, Spain or France. I hope he'll get a chance to move this summer. I like Gooch, but I wonder if he should be a day in and day out starter for us. Like others have postulated on here previously, maybe he should just be called in to mark a certain player or to play against a team with a certain style of play. I'd like to see what DeMerit or Parkhurst could do.
