I recently bought a VAIO laptop with Vista installed on it. My original plan was to wipe it out and install XP, but much to my surprise I actually like it!

I figured this would be a good thread to talk about all things Vista, share tips and tricks, etc.

Also, do you have a favorite Gadget? So far I'm using the Multi Meter and Feed Headlines. Any others you like?

I have the Home Premium edition.

    dual core 1.8ghz
    80gig
and a 256 video card...well its not actually 256...its shares 128mb from the memory.

I have a Dell Inspiron with the Vista Home Premium Edition. I like the Vista, but since I have so used to the XP layout, it takes bit to get used to how things are layed out.

    Mine is a Sony VAIO VGN-C290. It's a Dual Core 1.66Ghz with 2gb RAM.

I'm not sure about the video, I'm pretty sure it's integrated.

I'm sure you can disable this if you want to. You definitely could in XP.

I bought a new desktop for a great price right wen Vista came out (home premium). I have used macs my whole life, and at work I still mostly use macs (although I used to have xp, so there wasn't a huge learning curve). But the financial realities of college forced me to take a great deal on this PC. After two weeks I finally got all the settings the way I want them, and 6 months later I have no complaints. If you know what you're doing and can change the settings to be what you need, Vista is a fine OS. If I had the money easily I would still buy a new mac, but Vista gives me little motivation to save to do that.

I wanted a mac too. My plan was to create partition so i could run mac os and windows vista. but money was the issue with me too. But im happy with what i got.

I bought my laptop with xp media center. i got the vista update for free from dell...i only payed for taxes which was like 7 bucks. i got a good deal...plus i payed like 250 dollars less for my laptop cuz i used a coupon..hehe

We're buying or building a new computer and I need to make the Vista decision. I figure I'll go with Vista. I'm certainly not attached to XP.

Yup, SP1 is coming out sometime next year...theres going to be a beta version out first for a small audience

"SP1 will be released to a "moderate sized audience" in the next few weeks and will be available to the general public by the first quarter of 2008. An exact date for release will be set after Microsoft evaluates customer feedback from SP1 beta."

just started running vista ultimate, lots of pros and cons and lots of issues to be solved yet, I still have no sound as my crappy sound card just wont work with vista and lots of games dont run at all, which is odd when you consider some of the promo for vista included promises of great gaming.

im slowly catching up though, in the end once I get stuff caught up and running with Vista I can tell I'm really going to like the system in general.

I bought a cheap lap top for comuting to and from work. It won't run any new games. They crash or are incredibly painfully slow. The cheapness is likely 1/2 the factor in that. But I've had windows explorer crash a couple times. HOW? I've barely installed anything on it so far.

I have to dig in and turn off some of those security pop-ups. They're incredibly annoying. No need to ask me twice if I want to install something especially when I'm on the admin account.

Overall though I've found nothing compelling about using it. It's one thing to be "nice"; it's another to actually be compelling. Given it being a memory hog, I'm likely to put XP pro on it at some point soon. There isn't anything I've found with Vista that I actually need. I've only found it's pretty needy when it comes to having fancy hardware.

Just got a sweet deal on a Toshiba w/ Vista installed. Primarily got it to watch soccer matches while @ school, but I'm not comfortable w/ Vista's security features. I need to fool around w/ it some more and erase most of the pre-loaded crap, hopefully w/ time I will grow to like it.

A co-worker bought a nice new Sony Vaio laptop with Vista on it. It ran like an absolute tortoise. I convinced her to check out Ubuntu and helped her setup a dual boot. Even with all the fancy 3D effects turned on in Ubuntu the machine absolutely screams. She's considering wiping out her Vista partition and just putting XP on it for the handful of Win apps she sporadically needs to use. She's also considering just using Crossover Office, Virtual Box or a Vmware image to run them as well.

It's from beyond the valley of tortoise. If I actually turn it off and have to start (or god forbid restart) I can walk down to the cafeteria at work and back to get something in the time it takes to finish starting.

Vista needs ram... even "Home Basic" needs at least 2 gigs. I just bought a new laptop, and ended up having to upgrade it after the fact from 1 to 2 gigs of ram, and that REALLLLY helped. like hugely.

OT but, depending on what she's running, I'd suggest VirtualBox. I've used it for a while now to run some genealogy software and it runs that fine in only 192Mb of shared ram under XP, (I've only got 512Mb to run opensuse 10.2 so I have to share it out carefully).

This has been a major gripe from PC gamers I have heard. Glitches galore.

Now that I use Vista, this thread interests me and I want everyone to post in it again.

I've been trying for a while to get Windows Explorer working the way I like it, and I just can't. I hate it's blank titlebar, and it has two real bugs that can actually cause problems - it can show files that don't actually exist, and keyboard shortcuts don't necessarily go to what you think is the highlighted item. Anyway, I found a decent replacement and it's free - xplorer2 lite. It's briskly fast as well.

But mostly I like Vista. It boots fast, and I like its look (although I tend to turn off just about all the interface features).

I'm running Vista on a slow PC. P4 3.2, 512mb, 160HD, 64MB vid card running Home basic. It's pretty slow booting up and uses a lot of my memory.

I think i may partition the HD and install XP on it.

But, i find Vista rarely crashes programs. Majority of times you can work and not have any interruptions. If you have the appropriate processor and ram, Vista can be a very enjoyable experience.

I think you need 2GB to get it to run fast.

Ya, 2GB is the prefered amount of memory...but i'm running the Basic Home version. I tried the Vista upgrade software and it said my system was capable of Home Premium, but i needed more memory.I think it said 1GB....2GB may be for the higher versions of Vista.

But, i only paid $250 for my system, so i guess i can't complain.

When i had XP, i ran it on:

    P4 1.5GHZ, 256MB RAM, 80GB HD, 32MB video card...ran pretty quick.

Thank you Microsoft for giving us Vista. Thank you for opening people eyes on how not to create an OS. Thank you for pushing people away and making them want an alternative to bloatware and "trusted" computing. May the next release of Windows be as "innovative" as Vista!

The operating system is fine. It's user friendly and reliable. Many people revert from Vista bc they do not want to spend $1200 on a new pc that is required to run it correctly. Aside from all the new software they have purchase. For the basic user for internet, documents and multimedia, XP is fine and no need to upgrade.

The only reason why i have Vista is due to the fact that it came with my cpu and i've kept it on for warranty purposes.

If you have a top end cpu, Vista is a good operating system.
