Stanfurd scores. 2-1 on a play where Ruekner had to rush the ball and they barely got it over his head.
Stanfurd scores again. 2-2 on a centering ball that was headed in. Bad sub caused a miscommunication in marking.
First OT is scoreless. Gauchos put their second half starters back in and are playing a bit better, but Furd keeps getting a few runs here and there.
Probably giving up more than 14 goals this season. What happened to the backline? Or was it new 'keeper issues?
Gauchos lost last weekend to Gonzaga. A 2pm game on a Sunday isn't the best time for the Gauchos to play. We outshot the Zags like no other, but could not find the back of the night. They got one counter off a corner that just left an unmarked man at the top of the box for a low corner shot past Ruekner. Lost 1-0. We played and beat UW-Milwaukee 2-0. Pontius got the first goal on a scramble in the box from a FK. The second goal was just great altogether and Nunez finally got his first goal on a lovely shot from the top of the box into the upper v. We dominated that game from the beginning and probably should have scored more. The team is starting to come around more and more. I think last weekend was a wake up call. SMU will be a huge test for us. As for our GK Ruekner, he is very good. I wasn't at the Stanfurd match, but heard he did what he was supposed to do but didn't luck out. The goal from Gonzaga was a possible save, but came on the counter with the open man getting the ball. That same game though he came out on a breakaway and made an amazing save. He was also solid for the 2 saves against UW-M. One he had to stretch for, save, and gather the rebound. I think with Boxall and Iro switching around duties at CB, it will just stregthen our defense. G Curry is still waiting on his MRI last I checked, but he is solid in the back also. We just need to find the way to put our shots in the nets and then our defense won't have to worry so much.
Have you guys seen thata swedish player has joined the squad? Maybe somebody has seen him and can about his quality
He's played a few minutes in the matches so far. He hasn't shown much. He's played centrally in midfield. He looks slower compared to our other CMs and hasn't had any time to really do anything with the ball.
Gauchos in the past few weeks lost to NM, beat Colombia 5-1, tied Harvard, and they have just beat UC Davis 4-0 in front of a packed house. We lie at 4-2-2. Big game on Wednesday on FSC. Should have an awesome fan showing and be a great game since UC Irvine is having a good start to the year.
Nope, not yet. I know we and UCLA recruited U-17 captain Mykell Bates but he apparently verballed to Santa Clara. I know you have asked about and/or commented on Chris Pontius before. I have seen the Gauchos play 2 games so far this year (@ Stanford and @UCD), and I think he was our best player in both matches. A recent poll on the Gaucho message board for who our MVP is so far this year has him in first by far: http://p220.ezboard.com/Soccer-MVP-so-far/fucsbgauchosfrm2.showMessage?topicID=9226.topic Go Gauchos!!!
Chris has always been one of my favorites. He's coming into his own and is a tremendous asset to UCSB. He definitely deserves MVP especially after all his hard work. Just curious as to future recruits as my younger son really loves the team and would love to play for them. But...as his club coach stated, college recruiting is like "flavor of the week", and with the league season starting, recruiting goes in lulls as the coaches are busy. It seems many national players have already verballed. Some club teams down this way are over half-way done with recruits, and others have just one or two done. It is a stressful process especially for the parents. Thanks for the info though.
Gauchos are on fire!!!!!!!!! Didn't you see the smoke? 8 goals in the last two games is huge. I am glad we found our offense.
Anyone know if the game against Cal Poly SLO will be on gametracker or on UCSB's website tonight? Can't find anything, and with Poly 10-1-1 and UCSB is also doing very well. It should be an awesome game.
Gauchos down 1-0 off a FK right outside the box curled into the upper V. We are playing without Iro for his red card suspension from the Davis game. We need to get it together even if we are without Iro. About 10min left in the 1st half at this moment. Now they just didn't call a hand ball in Poly's box. Greeaaat. FYI, Poly's lead scorer is out for the season after messing up his knee after celebrating a goal against UC Davis. I find that kinda funny in some way.
Boxall apparently threw his man down after being fouled and we lucked out and no card was given with the ball given to the Gauchos towards the end of the half. And then..................... DAVID WALKER SCORES!!! Thank goodness. O'Brien crossed it to Walker it sounds like and Walker ripped it into the goal with 36 seconds left in the half. 1-1 at the half.
Poly scores quick in the second half and the Gauchos just can't recover. Boxall gets a second yellow and sits out against UCR. Poly takes over 1st in the Big West and will more than likely be ranked. Poly had a record crowd that rushed the field afterwards. Still isn't crap compared to a Harder crowd.
I was part of that crowd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just got back from the game. I've only been to a handful of Cal Poly soccer games in my _ years at the school and, of course, tonight was the best crowd ever! Makes me wish I followed our soccer team more throughout my time at Poly. Oh yeah, I forgot to say hi. This is my first time posting here. I usually just post in the MLS forums.
Who scored for Poly in the 2nd half? You've got to give Coach Holocher (sp?) credit. He's only had this program for around a year and half, and look what's he's done with it. Nice guy too!
But poorly misinformed or blind if he thinks his fans are at the same level as Man U. Hell, I don't even think we are at that level and we have the best fans in college soccer hands down. It happens in soccer. Not taking anything away from the guy, but sometimes the tide just doesn't go your way. Iro missing was big for a breakdown in our defensive leadership. And of course, we still can't finish. There is so much coulda woulda shoulda, but in the end, Poly finished when they needed to and pulled it out. It's also better for us though b/c we always play better when we actually feel we have something to play for. Not being in the top spot in the BW is definitely one of those somethings.
