As if we didn't need any more reasons for MLS teams to own their own stadium and not have to share them with non-soccer residents (ie: baseball/football) or have other owners who can rent them out to whomever they choose. This week, RFK (which just had the baseball clock torn down, pitcher's mound removed, backstop taken out and all new sod install) is being used for.... Pros vs. Joes. They are installing a boxing ring on the field. They're painting football lines on the field. DC United didn't want it but they have no say. The Stadium authorities claim that green paint will solve the football lines and there should not be any problems with the field. Meh. Every MLS team needs their own stadium designed for soccer.
The photos above are the reason the term Soccer Specific Stadium is a complete misnomer and a joke. Every SSS in the league gets used for other purposes and the MLS teams really have little or no say about it.
Really? The phrase Soccer Specific Stadium doesn't mean Soccer Only Stadium - it means that you have a properly sized field with proper site lines and a flat field (no American football crown) designed for the sport of soccer. What is a joke - is your reading comprehension skills. Just because you're irritated that people have been hating on Qwest Field doesn't mean the SSS concept is a joke OR that your assumption that ONLY soccer can be played in an SSS is what the phrase means. Actually MLS owners who own the stadiums (or control stadium rights/operations) have total say over how their stadiums get used - they just can design something specific to the sport of soccer that can ALSO accomodate other moneymaking ventures... hence, they're rich people - they figure out how to maximize utility of assets.
Actually we do have a say in it since we own our stadium. The X games are no big deal to me because we get a new field right after . The only one who seems to get punked in there SSS to me is Dallas with the football lines on the field. Thanks to our SSS we were able to schedule Superliga games at will and don't have to worry about scheduling conflicts during the playoffs. So what was your point again?
Qwest has all those attributes that you speak of. definitions of specific on the Web: * (sometimes followed by `to') applying to or characterized by or distinguishing something particular or special or unique; "rules with specific ... particular..... special....unique. dumbshit.
Yup. was just about to say that. Of course it was in the off season so maybe owning the stadium can give you that much leverage...
You really can't read can you. You're definition doesn't say specific means "exclusive" or "only" does it? You're the moron who made the statement that the moniker SSS means ONLY soccer can be played there if it was designed for soccer SPECIFICALLY in mind. A baseball park can be built SPECIFICALLY for baseball, but you can still put dirt on it and have a monster truck pull for your friends... You can build a stadium SPECIFICALLY for American football in mind, yet hold a multitude of other events like a fireworks show or a World Cup Qualifier. It's about pimary purpose and secondary purposes - one doesn't preclude the other. But unless you're blind like you are dumb, you can't go to a soccer game in a stadium designed for baseball with a dirt infield temporarily covered with grass or a narrow turf football field with a pronounced crown AND NOT think that the soccer experience would be so much better in a stadium with dimensions that accomodate a properly sized field, is flat, and allows you to see all four corners of the field... THAT is what a SSS does for a team. SSS has never meant (except to you) that the only thing the venue can be used for is soccer. What makes an SSS important to the sport is that it is designed to maximize the soccer experience but no where does it mean it PRECLUDES other uses of the venue.
You know FCD receives so much crap about its stadium. How many SSS received the kind of monetary support from the local community? Here is an answer. None. There is a reason why FCD is profitable and until idiots understand that MLS is a business and not a charity, BigSoccer will be full of ignorant posts about PHP.
Ok numbnutz ..... Here is my post again.... The photos above are the reason the term Soccer Specific Stadium is a complete misnomer and a joke. Every SSS in the league gets used for other purposes and the MLS teams really have little or no say about it. __________________ NOWHERE in that post is the word ONLY! Thanks for the comprehension lesson but I don't take education lessons from MORONS.
Qwest field sucks for soccer. It's just as if you were playing in Gillette stadium, or Giants stadium..which ALSO sucks for soccer. You're going to have 15,000 people a game, and have no atmosphere at all. Thanks for playing, and have a nice day. Maybe you guys can actually build something whose PRIMARY purpose is SOCCER.
I know everything about the PHP deal, I wouldn't comment on it If I didn't. I know it's profitable. I think the football lines kill everything and gives a bad image. That's it.
It's like arguing with a 3 year old. Why is SSS a misnomer because it accomodates other events? That's what you say - having another event in an SSS means the phrase is a misnomer, but it doesn't. It means it has multiple purposes even if it was designed primarily for soccer in mind. Seriously, how does another event being staged in an SSS somehow invalidate the term "Soccer Specific Stadium?"
Wrong. Since MLS teams are typically the owners and/or the managers of the SSS, they book these events. Obviously, soccer isn't enough of a draw yet in this country to make the financials of a SSS work by itself.
A better definition would be just plain soccer stadium. They are not being used specifically for soccer. They are multi purpose stadiums just like an Arena is used for basketball or hockey or a home show. To throw the word "specific" in is misleading. You brought up Qwest which is a multi purpose stadium for soccer and football. The comment I made had nothing to do with Qwest. You opened up with hostility when all I was saying is that SSS is misleading. You are allowed to disagree but why be such a prick about it?
Name me another sports facility that isn't used for an event outside of the intended sports occupants. Hell, Bruce Springsteen was able to fit a stage inside Fenway Park and make a nice profit off of it.
Sounderman is right. The SSS thing is a marketing gimick to appease to fans. But for all intents and purposes, they are just plain stadiums. The only thing specific about them is that they are owned or controlled by MLS soccer teams. The SSS should actually be printed as $$$. And there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, people would get less upset about other events getting staged in the stadium if the got rid of "specific" as it leads people to believe that the only use of the stadium should be for soccer.
Oops, I'm sorry, I was looking for BigSoccer. I somehow wound up at MySpace. My apologies. I mean ... w00t, or whatever you kids say these days.
