While Hugo is in love with the 4-4-2, I believe that the MNT lacks the players necessary to be successful with this formation. A 4-4-2 formation requires two conventional forwards that have size, good poaching, aerial ability/finishing, and can complement each other.

The MNT has only one true forward, Cacho, that can successful play up front. Castillo, Giovanni, and Vela are all more akin to attacking mids than true forwards.

I think that the most dynamic players that Mexico possesses (Guardado, Castillo, Giovanni, and maybe Vela) are not well suited to playing in a formation of 4-4-2.

The formation must complement the strengths of a nations players while minimizing their weaknesses. Hence, a nation that has tall/big players should play a physical style that emphasizes their aerial abilities while a nation of small/short players should play a possession style that maximizes the quickness and agility of its players.

Therefore I'd like to see the MNT play a 4-1-2-2-1

    -------------------------------[Ochoa]---------------------------------
    ------[Castro]-------[Marquez]---------[Magallon]-------[Salcido]-------
    -------------------------------[Torrado]--------------------------------
    ------------------[Arce]-------------------[Guardado]------------------
    ------[Giovanni]----------------------------------------[Castillo]--------
    -------------------------------[Cacho]---------------------------------

My reasoning for this formation is that it offers a good balance between defense and offense while minimizing the weaknesses (height/size/strength) of the Mexican NT players while playing to their strength (agility/quickness).

I think that a 4-3-2-1 may also be viable

    -------------------------------[Ochoa]---------------------------------
    ------[Castro]-------[Marquez]---------[Magallon]-------[Salcido]-------
    ------------[Arce]-------------[Torrado]----------[Guardado]-----------
    ---------------------[Giovanni]---------[Castillo]------------------------
    -------------------------------[Cacho]---------------------------------

What do you guys think would be an effective lineup for the MNT?

I would love to see the 4-1-2-2-1, but hugo is too hard headed to change what he has in mind. :(

He can go from 4-4-2 to 5-3-2 to 4-3-2-1 to 4-4-1-1 he's got access to so many players that can preform well at more than one position . Why not take advantage

I think a 4-2-3-1 would work with this team.......Hugo can always play with his 4-4-2 but giving players like giovani and Nery freedom to move around as they please, and he can turn a 4-4-2 into a 4-2-3-1 easily........

    Esparza---Rafa---anyone but Magallon--Salcido

    -----Torrado---someone other than Correa----

Esparza moves up on the attack a lot on Chivas, but i assume he won't do the same here. Salcido already provides us with some extra offense. this backline should hold against any team. unless Osorio improves then he will be replaced by our domestic players. Defensive midfield is great too with Torrado and Pineda, Pineda who i believe is underrated and is one the best midfielders in our league. how is Nery with his right foot? and how would Guardado play as an attacking midfielder? Cacho is proven and should always be our #9, until Vela gets playing time at Osasuna.

Guardado has been playing as a 10 at Depor as of late and has been doing exceptional for them their. The 3 on that line could interchange at some point in game if necessary. Nery played attacking from that side at Olipyakos and Gio does it in Barca.

When Esparza moves up, it turns into a promising attack. If he does then Pineda can just fall back and Magallon covers Esparzas place.

Pair anyone with Cacho, it will be good.

While i like Torrado as a "enforcer" on defense his poor passing is a major liability in the NT which plays a possession/passing style. I'd like to see Pineda/Arujo compete for his position.

While Magallon has played well at CB i would like to see him play as a right-back instead. My reasoning is that while Castro has played well at the right-defensive position, he does not advance as well as Magallon. I would like to see Aaron Galindo (played well with the NT before juicying) and Hector Moreno (he is tall 6'1" and young 19) audition/play the CB position because Magallon tends to make a couple of stupid mistakes at the position.

    *******************************************************
4-1-2-2-1 with Gio and Castillo switching sides and pressuring the opposing defenders.

    -------------------------------[Ochoa]---------------------------------
    ------[Magallon]-------[Marquez]---------[Galindo]-------[Salcido]-------
    -------------------------------[Pineda/Arujo]---------------------------
    ------------------[Arce]-------------------[Guardado]------------------
    ------[Giovanni]----------------------------------------[Castillo]--------
    -------------------------------[Cacho]---------------------------------

    ********************************************************

4-3-2-1 i'd like to see how Carlos Vela plays with Gio and Cacho because Nery is incredibly pass-averse.
    -------------------------------[Ochoa]---------------------------------
    ------[Magallon]-------[Marquez]---------[Moreno]-------[Salcido]-------
    ------------[Arce]-------------[Arujo/Pineda]------[Guardado]-----------
    ---------------------[Giovanni]---------[Vela]--------------------------
    -------------------------------[Cacho]---------------------------------
    ********************************************************
Subs: Kikin for Cacho, Bravo for Arce, Bofo for Gio

I'd like to see Kikin as the sub for Cacho because he has size and hustles on every play. He plays the forward position differently than Cacho and may be useful in confusing opposing teams.

While Omar Bravo has not been very good as a "target forward" i like his speed and effort/willingness on defense; hence, he may be a good sub for Arce. Omar Bravo will add a speedy mid with proven goal scoring.

While Bofo has been inconsistent with the NT he provides passing/size/creativity to the field in the absence of dynamic players like castillo/Gio.

Seeing all these formations, really do open up how the team can be planted. In the past we usually had only type of setup, but now we have alot of options to pick from. What I want to see is if we can find another winger/attacking minded player to play the right side. Arce is very good at what he does, but I think someone that would be creative would open it up that much for the team from the right side.

I like Nery in for Cerda, shift over Gio and Cacho plays behind Nery or Hobbit for Pineda and line of 4 with Cerda--Hobbit--Gio--Guardado and up top Cacho.
Villaluz, Cerda, Arce, or Gio can fill the void on the right.

    What about DeNigris?

interesting choice (cerda) i haven't seen him play but their is a positive gossip on him.

Antonio DeNigris? If you refering to him he maybe a possiblity due to his height (6'2", 6'3" or something like that) i a vague idea of him when he played for Mexico several years ago he was really inconsistent, maybe he could get a shot if he has improved. What team does he play for?

With Arce and Guardado as well as being great attackers

can help on the defensive side.

If we were to play with one lone striker and 2 attacking midfielders, I would prefer Nery, Gio, or Vela being the strikers over Cacho.

    I agree we shouldn't use 2 d-mids against teams like Guatemala. V.S
stronger teams however, we do need 2 contencias because we don't have someone like Gattuso. To keep the "punch" coming from the center of the field which we lack and stop only playing thru the wings, we need an enganche infront of the 2 contenciones who can distribute and control the flow. At the moment the best at this is Cuauh, but he will be too old for the WC, however we could use him in the eliminatorias and take him out of respect like Claudio Suarez.
