Been lurking around here for a while, and things seem to be full speed ahead... Mreetings, Council votes, ownership recognizing the supporters, jersey design, etc. I'm a St. Louisan who now lives in Indianapolis, and have been supporting the Chicago Fire for years. I've always said that if St. Louis ever got a team, I'd be thrilled to go to matches trying to outsing Section 8 rather than stand with them, and I'd probably end up "putting the Fire out" so to speak, at least on a personal level. I usually get to Chicago for one match per year, and have seen the Fire play in Columbus as well, which is always a good time. Made it out to LA for MLS Cup 8 as well..... I have some gear, watch on TV, etc. I'm a pretty good supporter for one who does not live in Chicago... I'm curious how many others are out there like me..... ready to change allegiances for the STL Franchise? If this Collinsville thing happens, consider the Fire ranks diminished by one, and your ranks swelling by the same number. A trip to STL to see the Cards, and the "Saints" (my preference) in the same weekend!!! Can't wait!! Bryan in Indy
it would be nice if stl got tons of fans right away, which they will of course....... but i dont know how many cubs fans i could stand lingering around the ST. LOUIS soccer team.... keep them up there
Why would a Chicagoan support the STL franchise? The Fire are right there... and are GREAT to thier fans. The STL franchise will pick up fans throughout the midwest who are like myself. Transplanted St. Louisans, or soccer fans NOT living in another MLS city, but who do have some ties to the city, or embrace the STL movement. I'm just curious how many of them are out there ready to take the plunge, or how many of them are out there and on board at this point in time. Agreed about the Cub fans though... (on a completely unrelated note, I still chuckle how they perpetually blame Bartman for 2003, instead of recoginizing the EIGHT FREAKING RUNS scored after the Bartman incident.... Kool Aid Drinkers if I ever saw one.)
dont forget the other ten people trying to catch the ball, and error by their shortstop......all this talk it feels like the team and stadium are just waiting for play, i forget sometimes that we dont actually have a team yet...
I'm ready to ditch Arsenal as my favorite team for the STL team, how's that? (I will still follow Arsenal hard core.....but STL would take precedence)
Well, there would be at least one of Laclede's Army in Denver at Rapids games - being a transplant myself.
Ditch the Wizards? Well, not totally as I still have many friends from my time in KC. They would slide to a distant second team.
I've loved Newcastle for nearly a decade and don't intend on that changing because I have a team to support in St. Louis. Mind you, if the two ever face each other for a friendly (or World Club Championship LOL - that's likely), I'd have to support St. Louis United. But I plan on closely following Newcastle's disappointing results, year after year, despite having a team much closer to home to obsess about.
Great, hilarious topic! As a wandering polygamist for all these years, it will be weird to finally have an actual live-in bride. I originally followed teams like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle (plus whoever caught my eye in other countries) simply by reading about them in Soccer America -- but once I could actually watch them on TV fairly regularly, I *still* couldn't help but root for them all (which, I know, justifiably should make me a pariah. *dodges tomatoes* What can I say? It was an organic process). When MLS started I took to DC United for the simple fact that their name and uniform was not as hideous as all the others, heh. That worked out well. I tried to have regional affinity for the Wiz(ards), but the name and stadium atmosphere just didn't grab me. When the Fire arrived I started following them to the point that it will be hard to truly "hate" them or D.C. once they're up against St. Louis...but I pledge to do my best!
Just to make this clear.... I will be a USMNT supporter #1, Liverpool FC will without a doubt be #2, and St. Louis will be third, but will probalby end up VERY close to #2. I've been a self proclaimed "Yankee Scouser" for almost 15 years, minus the petty theft, of course. The family dog is named after a Liverpool legend, I have several shirts, several scarves, and have skipped work several times for big matches, Champions League Finals, etc. have Fox Soccer Channel, Setanta, etc. It will be tough to cast all that aside. But a few trips to Collinsville will help the process along. To think I used to laugh when other supporters chanted "Piss on the Fire!" I guess I better practice it though..... Come on Collinsville!!!
Well... The word FIRE has officially been removed from my list of teams underneath my username..... hey are great supporters, the Section 8 gang. I've had a lot of fun with them... but the possibility of a STL team??? Feels good! Dam Good!!
Since I'm basically an MLS neutral, if the StL team happens, I'll be there on opening day, no question. However, it'll be very, very difficult to get me to cut my current allegiances to the Minnesota Thunder, because of the investment I've made in supporting them these last few years. So, I think it would remain Thunder über alles in my heart, and then StL MLS.
Hahaha, love the imagination, Iron... if Newcastle ever faces a St. Louis-based MLS side at the Club World Cup, drop me a line and I'll send you a case of Newcastle ale and a case of Bud in commemoration of the world's most unlikely outcome. Cheers!
I'm not ditching FCD just yet, but it looks like my wife is going to get transfered to StL in the next year. If so, I'll probably be jumping on board.
I will only ditch FCD if McCarty plays for St Louis. Otherwise, I will cheer for FCD mostly and STL occasionally.
I would definitely ditch Houston Dynamo (I switched to them from D.C. after they joined) but hailing from St. Louis and playing soccer for 15 + years there I would ditch without a doubt. I will be at the opener, season ticket holder, fanatical fan, TEMPLAR (my supportor group I hope to create if we go with the "KNIGHTS" name). As for #1, I am, and will always be, a CHELSEA FC fan. But since it has been increasingly difficult to see their games on TV (poor college student doesn't get FSC) and actually flying to London to watch their games leaves me wanting something more. ST. LOUIS! Prefect I say.
You're about 8 months late with that. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10840827&postcount=13
I tried to send a private email regarding this post to SB. I was unable, so my concern is aired here, in public. I'm a little irked by posts like this. Yes, some people have discussed this before. When posts like this are made, it makes it less likely for others to feel that they can express their opinion. GCSC wants a broad range of support, correct? Why would you discount someone's current opinion simply because someone else came up with it long before the current opinion was voiced? Perhaps, I'm biased. I'm not a huge fan of elitism, and this smacks of elitism to me. To me, the quoted post implies, "Ha, ha, we were here first - your idea is old and we're going to let you know how behind the curve you are." I understand that SB did not write the post he referred to. I don't intend for this to be a personal attack on SB. I have noticed many positive contributions by him on this board. I assume, judging by what is inferred on this board, that his/her positive contributions occur outside of cyberspace as well. I am just commenting on something that I notice every couple of days while checking up on the threads here at Candidate Cities:St. Louis. ...and for some irony, did someone already post this concern at an earlier date? In my laziness, I didn't bother to check.
I can't speak for SB's motives or intents in this situation, but as a fairly recent addition to this site he's been pretty accepting of me. Part of that may be that like him most of my efforts have been outside of these forums. My best advice to anyone interested in being a supporter is to get out and really support the stadium plan. This could come in the form of writing letters to the editor of the PD,BND, or even Collinsville Herald. Another great contribution would be appearing at the next council meeting. It's nice to speculate about the future, but if we don't get a team it's really all for naught.
i will deffinitly switch st. louis to number one, with us second and Fulham F.C. third. i will be at the first game and buy the kit as soon as it comes out. we will have one of the most loyal fan bases in the mls
