Re: Chastain, Foudy & Mia pissed is anyone listening?

Well stated. That's been my argument for sometime, now. This WC shows that perfectly. With the Nike propaganda, and keeping players around for their "name," it seems this organization was not focused on the right things, and were not out to take seriously the threats that were starting to arise from the rest of the Women's soccer world.

Oliver Kahn is a legend, but is now past his sell-by date, slowing down and has been replaced as his National team's #1 goalkeeper. So yes that is a great comparison to Scurry. Ryan is a nutbar that should be gone well before the Olympics.

Re: it only gets crazier, new vids on espn about Hope

Julie Foudy jumps to the defense of her friend Scurry, understandable, but did she really hear what Solo said? Solo was obviously lashing out at the coaching decision, not at Scurry. If you want to talk about mean-spirited-ness, that parting shot about "if I'm a player I don't want Solo in goal behind me" takes the cake. If I'm a player, I want a teammate who has fire and passion, two things the team on the field against Brazil, and particularly the goalie, DIDN'T HAVE.

Since everyone else is ignoring you (for good reason) I will say you are oversimplifying it. Flame elsewhere.

Re: Hope interview: behind the scenes

I agree. He makes a huge blunder. From the reporter, Erin Paul:

"We were busy getting a clip from Abby Wambach when I saw Hope Solo, clearly upset, walking by. I said quietly, "Hope, do you want to comment?" The press person for the U.S., Aaron Heifetz, said out loud to me, "She didn't play, you only want to talk to people who played the game." Hope spun on her heels when she heard Heifetz say that and said, 'No, I want to talk!'"

He should have said, "We are late for a team meeting", "We have to get back to the hotel", "I'm sorry, no questions at this time. There will be time for that later..", etc. The minute he said that he set the wheels of the bus in motion and off the cliff. He should have known better.

inflated soccer ego? that's funny in itself, but even if true, we can join a long list of great winners. i think most have accepted the loss, but now there's a juicy controversy.

Re: Hope Goes Ballistic at News Conference

It was really unproffesional what Hope did but when stuff like that happens i can understand why should would speak her mind. I think because she was pulled out we lost the game basically because with Hope out it just destroyed team chemistry and most importantly team moral.

    Re: Who wins the spin?

The USSF will win because they will suspend Solo. Scurry will retire and Ryan will be fired. Just so things will return to business as usual and in the long run nobody wins because they will keep making the same dumb mistakes. Foudy is on point with the yahoo article about how the past and current president cannot see two feet in front of them when it comes to making decisions regarding the future and instead are living in the past.

Jim Rome just led off with a rant on this. Said Solo's quote was awesome, best quote ever, Solo is now his favorite athlete. "TO is shocked at that" [IMG]

"It was the wrong thing to say but since it's soccer it doesn't matter. That was just awesome."

    Hope Issues Statement

    September 28, 2007 - Friday

    2007 worldcup

To all my old fans, to all my new fans, and to those who find me disgraceful,

I have felt compelled to clear the air regarding many of my postgame comments on Thursday night. I am not proud or happy the way things have come out. Although I stand strong in everything I said, the true disheartening moment for me was realizing it could look as though I was taking a direct shot at my own teamate. I would never throw such a low blow. Never. Many of this goes way beyond anyone's understanding, and is simply hard to justify. In my eyes there is no justification to put down a teamate. That is not what i was doing. I am confidant in knowing that i would have made a major difference on the field. I have to believe that. I have to believe that I should have been on the field or why am I a professional trying to be the very best? I also have agreed to disagree with our head coach and I stand firm in my beliefs that it was the wrong decision. However, to put down a teamate was never, ever my intent. I only wanted to speak of my own abilities yet also recognize that the past is the past. Things were taken out of context, or analyzed differently from my true meaning of my own words. for that I am sorry. I hope everybody will come to know I have a deep respect for this team and for Bri. For all of whom I disappointed I am truly sorry. There is a fine line of being a professional and being yourself. I can only do what I feel is right, and then hope that my true meaning is understood. I have an uphill battle now, and I have already suffered many consequences. For those who have been in my corner, your support means more than you'll ever know. I cannot thank you all enough. Truly there are too many to respond back to. I feel very fortunate to have the many different people from all different ages, countries, and personalities, standing behind me. It is extremely humbling. I only wish I could tell you all individually. For those who despise me, well, I can only hope that in due time you can find the understanding needed to forgive me.

    all the best,

    Hope

Whatever. I didn't realize you had psychic powers and knew what would have happened. He tried to do his job but it didn't work -- the player ignored him. Some of you people on this thread are just amazing.

not odd at all. it means she's able to observe a situation w/ a degree of depth. this apparently is challenging to some.

Again, Bruce Arena kept the peace between Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller during the prime of each career. There were blowups, but it never hurt the team. This episode brings serious questions about Ryan's player management. And it just seems to keep going.

Was Michael Jordan dripping with class, tact, and sportsmanship? No. How about Bobby Knight? No. And on and on and on.

Those things are essential to role models, not champions.

    How is that flaming?

One person's opinion (mine) of the whole Hope/Ryan saga that is going down. . . blaming each other for an ass whoopin' they have to swallow and stop their bitchin'.

I will say. . . judge elsewhere Mr. Judge!

If you don't like it just keep reading. . .easy as that. Now back to the real issues at hand. . .

what's missing here? hmm...oh, right, one or the other didn't trash the other on international tv. this is actually much more like '98, when players went gunning for the coach when they knew he was at his weakest.

Re: Chastain, Foudy & Mia pissed is anyone listening?

Don't lose the plot though, there are some real problems with this team and women's soccer development in general based on the inadequacies at the top. Not to mention the tactical game decisions. Shadows or not, when Brazil MT loses a WC, changes are demanded and made, and heads roll (player or management).

Re: Chastain, Foudy & Mia pissed is anyone listening?

Wow, that article was impressive. Much of it has already said and Chastain said a lot of what has already been said by many others, but the forcefulness and precision of her comments is quite stunning.

"He (Ryan) was the fifth choice of five people." That is a tsunami wave right there.

I didn't agree with Foudy during the broadcast that the US was only trying to disrupt Brazil, and I don't know why she would be so upset that the starting goalkeeper on the team claims that she is a better keeper than the benchwarmer and deserved to start. If Solo thought she should start despite believing that Scurry might have tactical advantages in this particular match, then it would be clear that she was not a team player.

I still can't truly believe that the full team never trained together, i.e. that the various lines always trained separately. It is inconceivable.

Both Foudy and Chastain hint that the player selection process has been far too weak, another sentiment frequently echoed on these boards:

"We really had to battle for our teams and our place, and that gives you a sense of camaraderie and pride. When we talked about this team – and I'm not blaming the players – we talked about a sense of entitlement." --Chastain.

"There are so many talented players out there, and you wonder, 'Is this program building? Is it growing? Is that the best soccer we can produce? Is this the direction we want to go in?' I don't think it is." --Foudy

Of course we all knew that was her intent from the getgo but spinners and PR wranglers are trying to misrepresent her to take the scathing eye of stupidity off Ryan's huge mistake. I hope this gets some press too...
