Hoy en día ni penadoy ni nacional le hacen sombra a defensor, se parece bastante a un cuadro brasilero la verdad.

September was a turbulent month with some remarkable trends. Sevilla FC kept the lead despite four defeats, because the European pursuers put in weaker performances or, despite good results, could not improve because of the deletion of so many points from the September 2006. So, for the first time since 1991, three clubs from South America are among the "Top 4" of the Club World Ranking, among them the winners of the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Libertadores.
The World's Club Team of the Month for September is Defensor Sporting Club from Montevideo, who remained unbeaten nationally and internationally during the month and achieved 42 points, improving from 51st to 26th place. Only Arsenal FC Sarandí achieved more points (46) worldwide, but the team from Argentina lost one league match.
In the meantime the situation has stabilized with each three to four clubs from Africa and the CONCACAF area featuring in the "Top 100". Now also the Asian clubs push forward in this area. Also the South American element (currently 31 teams) among the "Top 100" has also increased - all at the expense of the Europeans. This trend will continue in the long-term.
In the "Top 100" there are clubs from 34 countries: 61 clubs from the UEFA, 31 from the CONMEBOL, three from the CONCACAF, four from the CAF, two from the AFC, but none from the OFC. The following leagues are represented by the most clubs in the "Top 100": Brazil (10), Spain (8), Italy (8), Argentina (8), England (7), France (7), Germany (5),Colombia (4). The "Top 10" for each of the four football continents - South America, Africa, Asia and CONCACAF - are as follows

 

Well, basically I'm probably going to have a couple of weeks in Uruguay in a few months and hope to go to a few matches when I'm there, as long as my wife doesn't complain too much! I've always liked your national team and the fact that such a small country is so football mad. I've read about a few clubs, and have decided to support Defensor; mainly because they're a medium sized club (I couldn't support Penarol or Nacional) and because I like their kit colour, and they have a nice history.

What I'd like to know is, how does the support in Montevideo work? I am amazed that a city that size can have so many top flight teams. Do people often support one of Penarol or Nacional and then also a smaller team, or do lots of people support just say Wanderers or River Plate? Is support by district or soemthing else?

Also, who of the others has most fans? I would guess from what I've read Danubio then Defensor? Is that right, and who else has good fans? I've watched some highlights on youtube and some games seem to have about 1000 people there? Which are the main derby games outside of the big two that may be worth going to? Are there any stadiums or areas of stadiums that should be avoided by an Englishman becuase of crowd trouble?

Finally, I think there are two top flight teams from outside of Montevideo at the moment? If so, will either ever have a chance of becoming a top side?

Ok Where do I start? Defensor's hardcore fan base is nearly 10.000 strong but Defensor averaged more than 20,000 fans for home games, obviously some of them were unaffiliated fans but still they cheered up the team when they had to.

Founded in 1913, Defensor is considered the third strongest local team in Uruguay and the only one that can compete equally against two glories from the past, and I'm refering to Nacional and Penarol.

However the scene has dramatically changed since the beginning of the new century. Both classic teams (Nacional and Penarol) are going through a severe crisis (both financial and sport crisis) and they are getting worse each year.

On the other hand Defensor has taken the lead winning not only the public's heart but also an unprecedented media coverage from the local and foreign press.


Most people are amazed at just how well the team is playing hammering every opponent they face.

Nowadays Defensor has the most competitive team and is the n 1 candidate to achieve the title. A talented generation of young players among some experienced and very effective men are part of a very united team with one aim: make history.


Unfortunately most people refuse to move forward due to uruguay's tradicional roots...so It will take a while before Defensor can actually match Nacional or Penarol supporter base. Have in mind that 90% of the population which is 3 million people, are supporters of one of the teams mentioned above. It's sad bad true.

Danubio has severely reduced its budget and it appears that they won't be able to catch up with Defensor. They have no international prestige and the proof is that they were humillated by modest team Tacuary from Paraguay.

So all in all, I can say there's a visible gap between defensor and the rest of the teams despite of all those out-dated people who still dream about achievements from the very faraway past.

Violeta y millonario en “verdes”

Defensor Sporting ha recaudado, prácticamente, 1 millón de dólares, por su participación en Copa libertadores y Sudamericana, la Asociación se queda con el 10% y además, fue reconocido por Fifa como el mejor club del mes de setiembre. El equipo de la Farola, sigue creciendo.​

"Los números que maneja son muy cercanos a esa cifra, a la que hay que descontarle desde el porcentaje de la Asociación, hasta pasajes, viáticos, premios, en fin. Pero creo que no es menor que entre un millón de dólares al país", nos afirmó el presidente de los violetas, Fernando Sobral.

-De ese dinero, una parte importante, 50%, es de los jugadores, por premios.

-Entre jugadores y técnicos, entre víáticos y premios, tienen más o menos ese monto, o en el correr de las dos copas, han logrado ese monto. Y le reitero, el tema de viajes y hospedajes, se lleva otra parte importante.

-Y los partidos de local, por recaudación...

-Justamente, no nos dan taquilla, porque nosotros lo encaramos como aporte al Pereira Rossell, pero no nos podemos quejar porque algún dinero ha dejado y más allá de la parte económica, nos ha prestigiado en el mundo y eso es lo más importante. Como el reconocimiento que nos hizo la Fifa.

-Esto motiva, incluso, que Defensor tenga que pagar por entrada, en lugar de recaudar.

-Por cada entrada que se vende, hay una parte para Unicef, Pereira Rossell y Confederación Sudamericana y Defensor, de acuerdo al compromiso asumido, pone una determinada cantidad de dinero.

-¿Y como si fuera poco, 100.000 dólares para la Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol?

-Efectivamente, es una norma, con la que nunca estuvimos de acuerdo. Se lo manifestamos al anterior presidente de la Asociación, también al actual, y esperamos que se cambie de futuro, no para bien de Defensor, sino para los equipos uruguayos, porque nos parece excesivo que la Asociación tenga ese porcentaje, el que no existe en los demás países de América.

-¿Económicamente sirve participar en estas copas?

-La Copa Libertadores es más interesante, desde el punto de vista económico, porque se asegura una cantidad importante por los tres partidos de local de la serie. La Sudamericana, en la medida que se vaya pasando de fase, cuando se llega al cuadro final, los números comienzan a ser interesantes. Pero depende mucho del rival, porque, por ejemplo, el partido con El Nacional de Ecuador, no le reportó ganancias. Es que entre viajes y hospedajes, se fue todo. Pero en el partido con River Plate, por un tema de cercanía, nos puede dar un buen resultado económico.

-Y tienen idea de realizar una gran fiesta.

-Esperamos hacer un buen espectáculo. El partido estaba fijado para hoy (ayer), habíamos hecho toda una planificación, muy apurada, que creo iba a salir más o menos bien, pero no quisieron jugar el 10, sino el 25, cosa que nos extrañó muchísimo. No sé los motivos y no quiero ponerme a investigar cuáles son. Pero esto nos permitirá tener unos días más para organizar mejor ese partido. La idea es que vaya mucha gente.

Esperamos tener un muy buen marco de público y un gran espectáculo. Por ende, una muy buena recaudación, que seguirá siendo volcada a Unicef y al Pereira Rossell.

Según este delegado los honorarios del escribano Jorge Franzini Batlle, que la AUF ya le pagó, fueron por su participación en la confección del acta notarial del fideicomiso que gestionó la AUF ante el Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay. "Yo pensaba que el escribano Franzini, estaba en el fútbol para colaborar desinteresadamente. Hete aquí que leyendo el acta del Consejo Ejecutivo me entero que reclamó el pago de honorarios por su actuación profesional. Es la primera vez que un delegado, con título universitario, le cobra honorarios a la AUF", manifestó el colega del dirigente violeta..."
