This is guy is def. quality. I am sure he will start for Charlton when he gets back to full health.

Charlton look very dominant right now, Gibbs only re-enforces a very strong team. Theyve got quality forwards in Reid, Zheng, McKleod, et al. A real luxury. A sturdy back like Gibbs only helps things. I have a good feeling Gibbs and Charlton go up automatically this year, one or two (Watford being the second, that parachute windfall is astronomical)

    Great news.

A healthy Gibbs should be a first XI player for the US. Just want to see him back on the field playing on a week and week out basis.

    Never thought I'd read that.

I know what you mean, it just sounds funny to call a guy who's been hurt his whole career "sturdy".

As an aside, can we wait to see how he looks before we declare that he is better than what we have now?

Hard to tell if it's scares but to me it looks more like the imprint of his flexed thigh muscle. Plus, I'm almost certain the surgeries were on the right knee.

I always find it amusing that we put the R's on the reserve matches of a championship team. Just in case somebody has it tivo'd I guess.

I'm glad Gibbs is back on track. It's going to be a while before we see him for the USMNT, though. Charlton isn't gonna want Bob to risk him in a meaningless friendly. Perhaps we'll see him in the run-up to WC10 qualifying. It's also a big assumption to say he's a definite first XI player for the US. I have no idea whether he'll be better than Boca, Gooch, DeMerit, Conrad, etc. etc. when his recovery is complete. We're making the grand assumption that there won't be any long-term effects of the injury. Which there invariably are.

I'd actually see what he could do for us on the left side first, as he looked pretty good there pre-injury.

Does anybody know how he played? Must have been fairly solid if they lost 1-0.

    Re: Gibbs' return advances (R)

dont shoot the messenger here, but i think once Cory becomes healthy that he will be lining up at left back for this squad, im trying to put myself in the train of thought of BB here. I think he would make a better CB no question but, ive got that nagging feeling they will roll him out left when he gets healthy. Bradley will look at the tape against Germany and look how well he played there, shutting down Asamoah, and getting up field to cross the ball. And if i recall Cory played left back against Morrocco too. We'll probably be looking at Cherundolo-Onyewu-Bocanegra-Gibbs as Bradley's preferred back four.

But the bright side, BS will be brought to its knees overcome by joy when they dont see John Bornstein as Bob Bradley's prefferred left back :D

(note: i dont have anything against Bornstein whatsoever, but alot of people here would like to see him go. Gibbs is a notable upgrade regardless)

    What, no Heath Pearce?

    *dodge*

Regardless, great for Gibbs, and perhaps even better for Charlton if he plays as well as he did prior to his injury. Seems wrong for them to be in the Colaship

Why? Charlton don't have the history of topflight footy that an Arsenal ,Spurs ,Chelsea, or West Ham have. The Addicks are defo a second-tier London club.

    Re: Gibbs' return advances (R)

I totally support playing Cory Gibbs at LB. We have a fairly deep pool of center backs and a very thin pool at LB. Both Gibbs & Bocanegra are capable of playing at LB if needed, but the difference is that a healthy Gibbs has superior foot speed, making him a better candidate for the flank. We need to get our best players on the field, and Bocanegra, Onyewu, DeMerit, Conrad & a healthy Gibbs are all better than Bornstein, Pearce or any of our other options at LB. Obviously, Onyewu, Conrad & DeMerit aren't good candidates for LB, but Boca & Gibbs are, and Gibbs gets the nod in my book because of his superior pace.

    Re: Gibbs' return advances (R)

Well I will dissent from the BS common wisdom. Jonathon Bornstein has all the tools to potentially be a truly great left back, Cory Gibbs doesn't (mainly because his offensive skills are not great). On the other hand, Carlos Bocanegra is having a good year for club and country, all he needs is a partner who can make up for his lack of size. While Gibbs is no Gooch in the size department, his size and speed is theoretically a great combination for Bocanegra.

Of course, this is way premature as Gibbs as a long way to go before the USMNT should even consider him. Let him play this year for Charleton and hope that goes well.

    Gibbs To Return In January?

    http://www.americansoccerdaily.com/news/gibbs251007.htm

ASD is reporting that, despite the English media saying Cory was all but done both for the season and maybe for his Charlton career, he may return as early as the New Year. Charlton's press officer mentioned normal recovery time is 2 months but they are not setting a target date. He's certainly not out of the woods yet but this is some positive news. Though they aren't setting a target date they aren't saying he's done for the season. I nearly shed a tear for Cory reading his latest injury set back and I'll keep my fingers crossed he can recover and make that long waited debut. This could be the toughest and most important 2-3 months of his career.

Wayne Rooney breaks metatarsals for lunch ... and comes back 6 weeks later.

I'll believe it when I see it! This guy has been hurt since right before the last world cup. How long ago was that? :(

Re: Gibbs To Return In January?

I was thinking the same thing initially van, metatarsals, thats a 2 month layoff at best, 4 month at worst. For the average player thats about the average recovery period. Rooney was 6 friggin weeks, Michael Owen's was 2 and a half months, and hes pretty injury ridden, even according to logistics an injury riddled player as oft injured as Cory should have 4 months, its not like because you break more it will take longer to heal, each bone should heal at the same rate. But we are dealing with Cory Gibbs here, seriously Gibbs and JOB are the unluckiest soccer players i have heard of in my entire life hands down, no one else even comes close.
