I think this is a good idea because Clark Hunt might not be aware that the fans aren't happy with the current state of the Crew.

And after a massive letter writing campaign, he probably still won't; his front office will but he probably won't. I'll take a visit to the stadium and the sight of a burning Clark Hunt effigy constructed from materials "obtained" from the nearby Lowes hardware. If we could get some folks bearing yellow and black war paint to dance nekkid around it, even better.

It'd be pretty easy to just flood their fax machine once or twice a day. That'd be pretty awesome/fun. How about something simple and to the point

"Columbus Crew Fans Think Clark Hunt Doesn't Care About Us"
"Clark, your father rolls in his grave with your inept handling (or lack of involvement) in making the Columbus Crew a championship caliber side"
"Sell Columbus Crew to Local Investors Who Care"

It's not my job to determine who in the greater Columbus area is a potential investor.

Well, it's not the soccer gods, but Clapton has to be on better terms with them than most people. After all,

Oh, there are plenty of people. See: St. Louis, Seattle, Philadelphia...

Seriously, if a local owner/group were interested, the Hunts would listen. They have no reason NOT to sell the team. The fact that they still own the team should tell anyone who is paying attention that there's not much interest. Quiet down the new ownership talk, that's not the problem here. On the other hand, if your dream is to see Columbus without a Major League Soccer franchise, by all means, keep up the negativity and soon enough we'll be without a fanbase and without a team.

    What are you smoking?

Seriously - did Clark or HSG ever come out and say that if the Crew found a DP that wanted to come to Columbus (like FC Dallas did) they wouldn't help sign him? Honestly, it's a legitimate question - because I have NEVER heard anything of the sort.

Some of this is getting beyond the idiocy phase...

I still think they have turned away legit options for monetary reasons, but those options could have catapulted us into the playoffs. See Wanchope, Paulo. And I still believe, no matter how many times that I have to say it, that Guille could have had Palermo here in an instant, if all the talk about him being interested in MLS is true... so I think they were seriously slacking. How come they didn't land Angel? There's many options they seem to have missed the boat on. And I'd wager that all of those options would come to Columbus for the right amount of cash... hell even RSL's little Argentine trio is helping them win, and I don't think any of those guys are DPs, and I bet they would give a nut to play with Schelotto. But somehow they decided it would be fun to play in Mormonville, USA.

And there's is your problem...a lot of "speculation" on you part, don't you think?

Are you kidding? This is a little out there...

well, with the way we get info from the team, speculation is the best you can do around here.

And why do you think we couldn't have landed Angel. Everyone knows HSG has huge resources to pull from, and I think that those 14 goals he has scored would come in handy with some of the 1-0, 2-1, 1-1 ties that we have suffered this season. And, as I said in my original post, for some of these guys it would be the money that would bring them here, not the nightlife, especially the DPs besides Beckham. Angel and Schelotto? I know they were on opposing teams in Argentina but for crying out loud, they would be a badass combo for us.

And I'm to assume that other than Wanchope, who they were not willing to pony up the cash for, they have missed others too. Sigi is supposed to be so well connected, why didn't he sign Blanco? Hell, the rumors of Ruiz would have been nice, I'm sure he would have helped us up top too.

No offense, but you have a lot of speculation in your post, and in my opinion it's unfair to crack on the Crew based on your speculation of players who might have been available. And I'm really curious about the "many options they seem to have missed the boat on."

The options they missed the boat on were the others who have been signed by other clubs, that's the point I was trying to get across. That most of these South Americans would not mind living in Columbus at all, and with one SI and one (i think) YI spot, we should have been looking at getting some help. look at Toja. He's young, not a DP I don't think, and he's damn good. We need one of those. If we are not going to utilize all of our attacking options available to us, then lets trade them. I could care less if the reserve team goes 0-10 if the main squad makes it into the playoffs and does well...

And besides which, I could see someone like Jason Garey doing very well with better feeding. Which is precisely why Joe is doing better at Houston, he has the skills, he just didn't have a good enough team to get it done. Same for Herron and why he did well at the Fire but is not doing super here. Hell, with his goal-minute ratio I would think Sigi could look past his damn doghouse and see the pissed off fans who want to WIN.

If a team had no legitimate shot at acquiring someone, is it fair to say they "missed the boat" on that player? I have no idea if the Crew could have legitimately signed any of the players you mentioned, but I suspect the list of realistic targets does not equal the list of players who were signed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a frustrated fan, too. However, I want to make sure I'm frustrated by the "right" things and the "right" situations.

Maybe missed the boat is a bit of an overstatement, but sometimes it feels like the organization has just plain missed the boat alltogether. I'm sure they are convinced they are doing the best they can, but are they really? Is Leonard Griffin the best they can do? apparently so, luckily all we had to give up was a 4th round supplemental draft pick for his rights to Shitcago. I'm just frustrated and I personally feel like they were not taking calculated gambles and chances like they should be. If we wanted a DP, we would have had one. But we don't. It's blatantly obvious we need a finisher, a striker, but we don't have one. We "tried" with getting Moreno, but despite his obvious efforts, it's not good enough. Maybe the answer isn't from the outside, but from the inside. I know Sigi sees and knows all, but from what I saw at the Colorado reserve game, there's a very hungry Jason Garey waiting to be started for the big team, plus a more-than-capable Robbie Rogers who could come in too. But I question Sigi's insistence on keeping them out of the game. Oh well, I might be fat, but I'm not the fat guy on the sidelines. We will see how it shakes out after today's game.

For me, this sounds a lot like last season, when we couldn't seem to find a single player in the entire world to use our allocations to sign. (I know, we tried to get Chopra). Is there no one, anywhere, who would come play for the Crew when we have a supposed blank check on how much we can sign them for (at least, in the rulebook, which may not be the same as how much HSG has said we can spend).

Here's the thing -- first, the day the league announced the DP spot, we should have compiled a laundry list of guys we'd like to try to get. From what we've heard publicly, that list was Brian McBride. Obviously, I'd guess there were others, but here we are again, in a situation that appears to me to say we put our eggs all in one basket, and when we don't get the one guy we're trying for, we're completely stuck, and we've got to hit the reset button and start the process over again, instead of working on back-up plans.

Beyond that, and I know Fid questioned earlier if HSG has said they wouldn't help sign a DP, and we don't know what sort of financial constraints have been put in place, if any, but TimD posted in one of the other threads about the pre-game forum last week, and MM speaking of "challenging" HSG on the DP issue. Now, maybe that's GM speak for simply asking for $, but that sounds, on the surface, like we're limited in what we can do.

Which, unfortunately, brings me to this -- we're going to have to overpay a guy to come to Columbus. We're not NY or LA or Chicago. Everybody talks about how nobody wants to play here, which can't entirely be true, or we wouldn't have GBS. But, the great equalizer can be cash. If a guy is a $1 million dollar player, offer him $1.5m. It sucks financially, but that might be what needs to happen for us to get a guy.

Now, beyond all that, and someone with a better knowledge of MLS salary cap rules can clarify this, isn't the allocation money we used to sign GBS only good for this season. Perhaps bringing him back will require a larger amount of cash, and we're saving that DP to keep him here, knowing we don't have anything of value to acquire a second DP.

Or, we're trading for Donovan after the season, because he's played for the Galaxy (even though it wasn't for Sigi)...
