Do you think a loss to Chivas will do him in before the end of the season? at this point why not just wait until its over

There has been so much churning of the roster and upheaval, I can't see any value in changing coaches now. I hope this is Paul Bravo's decision to make, not Lalas.

Galaxy fans seem more anti-Lalas than anti-Yallop. I wonder if Lalas will start feeling the heat and sacrifice Yallop to deflect criticism. This will buy him another year as GM, because he can show how much he cares and knows the fans will give the new coach time to "mold" the team.

I'm fine with Lalas firing Yallop.

I can't believe Frank had nothing to do with personnel decisions.

I wish a reporter would do us all the favor of revealing what exactly the dynamic is now between Bravo-Lalas and Yallop.

What responsibililites does each person have with respect to

    a) obtaining players
    b) hiring /firing coach (Between Bravo/Lalas)
    c) identifying players/ scouting
    d) youth team set up (Do we even have one?)

    etc.

It would make a good story for one of the local soccer blogs...

There seems to be some disconnect between Yallop and Lalas on personal. You have to feel that Jazic was hand picked by Yallop. On the other hand, I can't picture Yallop going after X, can you? That looks like a Lalas move all the way. Point being, if Lalas and Yallop are going in separate directions with acquisitions (remember all the comments that Lalas has been making about "players who can deal with the pressure of playing with Beckham"?), than you're going to end up with a dis-jointed team.

Someone, either Yallop or Lalas, has made a decision to go with a "short" roster for over a year now. When the inevitable injuries hit, the Galaxy were screwed.

There is one thing I'm sure of. If Yallop wanted a player and Lalas said no, then the Galaxy wouldn't get that player. If Lalas wanted a player and Yallop said no, I think the Galaxy would get that player anyway.

This is what I attribute to Frank:

Jazic, Harmse (Canadians- no big deal), then Dunivant (who ironically is playing in Canada), Gardner gone, Cannon for Hugo/Herc ... then I remember seeing something last year about Yallop not liking large rosters, which IMO is something real stupid given the number of competitions, friendlies and exhibitions.
Maybe he has too much confidence in his ability to turn mediocre players into contributors; or maybe he is one of the "4400" (tv show..... ?? ) with healing powers.

    A promise unfulfilled...

Does anyone out there still have the Volume 12, Issue 1, 2007 "Galaxy FreeKick" magazine? I do. I'm holding it in my hands right now.

Here is what Yallop wrote in his "Coach's Corner" piece:

"....Last year we weren't able to make up enough ground over the final months of the season and missed out on the playoffs for the first time in this club's history. To me, and the entire organization, this was not acceptable.....
.....We have a lot of games on the calendar and when you add into that the potential national team involvements of so many of our guys, you see that we need depth and that is something that I am trying to establish here. Every player that is on our roster between now and the end of the season is there because they can help this team not only win, but win today.

And that is our goal for each and every game that we play.

.....The world soccer spotlight is now upon the Galaxy and I do not mean to disappoint..."

I picked up the magazine at the first 2007 LAG vs. Chivas USA game in April.

Those were Yallop's own words. You can draw your own conclusion.

I'm probably going to get a lot of stick for this, but I can't help but feel that Yallop is taking the rap for everything that's gone wrong this season unjustly. Sure, he's ultimately responsible for how the team is run, but there's been so much upheaval with Becks coming in and lots of players coming and going... he hasn't been able to field the same guys for two consecutive games, maybe once or twice this season.

We all know that for a team to win they have to gel together, and that doesn't just happen on the training pitch. It also happens in games and in game situations, and it happens over time. The Dynamo are a good example, because those guys win and they win because they've got quality but mostly because they've got a group that's essentially played for awhile together. Same as D.C. United and a host of other teams.

I know that the Galaxy have had problems for awhile, but I feel like everyone is after Yallop and doesn't seem to understand that there are other factors involved in why we are The Suck this year, not just him and his management. I've personally called for his resignation before, but I'm starting to think that maybe it isn't the right thing now. Give the guy a chance to prove that he's the man with the same group of guys, and if it doesn't work then it's time for a change.

That's just my two cents worth...

Yallop is still here, so he's likely to be here until the end of the season, at least, and maybe even next season. If he hasn't left yet, he's not leaving.

I'm not picking on you personally, but I sooooo disagree with this sentiment when it is expressed on this board.

Jazic is a mediocre player. When he is defending he backs off his player about 2 yards because he isn't quick enough to stick the forward, and will get burned if he gets closer.
Roberts is a terrible right back. He doesn't know how to play the position and he gets turned like a top repeatedly.
Klein is slow as molasses. He is a good guy, and used to be a great player, but now he is one of the weakest right backs in MLS, after Roberts.
Kelly Gray is soft. He gives up on plays, loses the ball then watches, and just doesn't have much grit.
Martino is soft, makes stupid tackles from behind, seems ok with the situation when the team sucks.
    Veganas is unskilled period.
    Buddle is lazy.

NONE of these things have much to do with "team chemistry", distractions, or gelling. Jazic and Klein will always be slow from here forward. Roberts would need months of playing right back in reserve games before he would learn the nuances of the position. If Vegenas hasn't learned how to trap a ball or make a quality pass by now he never will.

Sure lack of chemistry doesn't help, but the problem with this team is that many of the players range from medicre to bad.

Forget chemistry - let's look at a top MLS team, DC United and compare just personnel with the LAGS. You are starting a new team - rank order within each position the order would you pick the following players. Then see how many LAGS are on your team.

    Forwards (pick 4):
    Addlery
    Buddle
    Emilio
    Gordon
    Glinton
    Kpene
    Moreno
    Pavon
    (My choices: Emilio,Moreno,Kpene,Addlery)

    Midfield Playmakers (pick 4):
    Beckham
    Donovan
    Fred
    Gomez
    Gros
    Martino
    Jones
    Olsen
(My choices:Gomez,Beckham,Donovan,Fred, wow what a midfield!!)

    Defensive midfielders (pick 3):
    Carroll
    Gray
    Harmse
    Mediate
    Vagenas
    Simms
    (My choices: Carrol,Simms,and uggg...Gray)
    Defenders (pick 5):
    Boswell
    Burch
    Harden
    Jazic
    McTavish
    Namoff
    Randolph
    Roberts
    Vanney
    Xavier
    (My choices: Boswell, McTavish,Randolph,Namoff,Vanney)

So for me, if these 32 players were in a line, and I got to pick as outlined above, I would end up with 12 of 16 from DCU. And of my 10 field starters, two or three would be from LAG: Donovan, Beckham, and possibly Randolph. I didn't mention keepers because I think both Perkins and Cannon are quality (believe me, on a team like DCU, Cannon would look just fine.)

Both teams LAG and DCU essentially have the same money to spend, except for LAG getting to spend a fortune on Beckham. Why has one team ended up with most of the talent? That has to fall at the feet of the front office. Lalas has fuxxed up this team.

So while it is true the team has no chemistry - its more true that all of the chemistry in the world wouldn't make up for the mostly weak assemblage of talent on this team. What's most infuriating though is that neither Lalas or Yallop seem to recognize this. Lalas blabbering on about looking for players who can "handle the spotlight"... how about players who can handle a soccer ball? Yallop looking woeful and not yelling at his players when they stand around like dopes. Its all too much to take. I know I suffer when I see this team play - I can only imagine how Beckham feels. :(

    the season that went booooooooooooom

Everyone asks what went wrong with this team?

Who is to blame. But the art of being this crappy and the new way sporting organizations and athletes work is to never be copeable to any blame whatsoever.

Is this whole season Yallops fault?

    A) Yes, he had a hand in this disaster, coached this team... picked the lineups, created the tactics, and made player substitutions in those games.
he definately is to blame for this season.

Is this whole season Lalas fault?

    A) Yes, he didnt have to tinker to much with this team in the 2006 offseason. one decent trade, and obvious major acquistions thats all it took. but the incesant trades and moves gave the team a revolving door feel. Alexi is at fault for not knowing anything about player developement and accessing talent levels, it is because of him the team is non-functional right now. And his over the top antics to the media that LAG will not live down his hype fest.

Is this whole season Beckhams fault?

    A) Yes, but for more off the field than on because he didnt disclose the severity of his ankle injury. His media circus is a complete distraction to a team thats used to getting 1% of that kinda media attetion without him. His attitude on the field reflected his own ego. If I believe david beckham thinks he made a mistake coming here, that is because he genuinely projects that in his demeanor, and the way he avoids these questions when asked by the media who befriend him for his likeablility. Its plain to see the Galaxy are playing better without him since the pachuca game There are many reasons that is.... and becks is behind 75% of them.

Is this whole season Donovans fault?

    A) Yes, more on the field than off. You can say that this was LD's team until January of 2007 and the becks announcement. at that point to think LD hasnt thought of every scenario of why becks is here and what that means to him.... is naive and ridiculous... he is a professional athlete and his ego is just as big as becks, just not as pampered. LD has basically been a transitional player this year, he can come and go. take games seriously, or not. When becks finally got here we saw a glimpse of magic between the two... but these are two players not looking to compliment each other, but out do and out spotlight. Donovan is not in that place becks need LD to be, a hungry go getter looking to be placed upon some fame from beckhams hands. LD is a child who will go hungry to sacrafice himself. LD claims Los Angeles is his town. Becks is here now taking it away from LD, and I feel for the kid, If he feels betrayed by the organization because they brought becks here he has every right to. (3) mls cups in his young career, he doesnt need the aggrevation of being LAG's,Lalas, becks whipping boy for potential problems. he should leave here... immediately.

Is this whole season AEG's fault?

    A) Yes, they will forsake it all for the money. They have hired overrated imcompetent management to fulfill a hollow destiny of being a flagship organization on paper, but not on the field or in the trophy case. They measure their success by bank statements and not by gold plated gawdy silverware. If jersey sales and television contracts made the fans genuinely happy then I would be shitting out gold bricks with enthusiasm, but im not.... Im writing this post. "Yeah". Unkie Phil wants a return on his money, and in that is he no more a soccer visionary than a loan shark. He is for lack of better term a soccer peddler. He gives me my soccer fix, but whether Im happy or not about what I pay for... he doesnt care cuz peddlers always can sell there product to the next guy. Bringing becks has essentially said to all you loyal fans is, "get on the bandwagon and shut up." If you dont believe me call your ticket reps which many of you have, you get the hard sell about not being able to see the wonders that beckham will bring and how you will be left outta the loop if dont buy what were selling.

In some respects its the fans fault also, Not enough of us showed up to the games over the last 2 or 3 years. we didnt buy enough merchandise, enough beers. AEG lost millions on this venture for which we took advantage of there great misfortune. You didnt help promote the team and this sport enough to bring more people to games, who would eventually become fans. You didn't support all the products that paid for sponsorship to the Galaxy Organization. You took advantage of low priced tickets full well knowing AEG was losing money with every passing year. You will have to pay for your beligerence of the past as new sicko-fans like an un-thundering hoard move into those nice season seats they kinda want. The difference between LA soccer fans, and soccer fans from other parts of the world is that they are interested until something cooler comes around. And as Galaxy fans you cant control that, you only hope to ride it out, while AEG pushes and pushes to exploit it.

I personally think its the fans fault as well. Mainly for not buying $12 beer inside the stadium and supporting David Beckhams $32,000 per minute salary.

Remember folks, in Heaven there is no beer, so we gotta drink it here!

I agree that both Roberts and Klein are weak right backs, but they're not right backs. Roberts is a center back and Klein is a midfielder. Ideally, neither would be playing there.

Our lack of depth is perhaps a fair criticism, although I think it's hard to have good depth when you look how deep in the roster we are going.

As to the players, if I could choose from both rosters I would go with (in a diamond midfield).

    ---------Emilio---Donovan---------
    ------------Gomez------------------
    Fred-----------------------Beckham
    ------------Olsen-------------------
    Randolph-Boswell-Xavier-Albright
    -------------Cannon----------------

Which gives the Galaxy 6 out of 11, although DC brings three out of the five impact players.

Why are we doing so bad? Beckham and Albright played for about two games. Xavier and Randolph didn't play for the first half of the season and Donovan missed a number of games on international duty.

The big difference between the teams was the offseason had by DC United. And I give them a world of credit for this. They worked hard to get Fred and Emilio and it's paid off. We didn't. But I blame Frank as much as I do Alexi.

Say that we had the same offseason as DC (ie, Fred and Emilio). Next year we line up as:

    -----------Emilio-------------
    ------Donovan------------------
    Martino------------------Fred--
    ---------------Beckham--------
    ----------Harmse--------------
    Randolph-Harden-Xavier-Albright
    -----------Cannon-------------

That's a team that could challenge for the championship.

TJ....you smokin' the herb in the wee hours of the morning before writing these rants? I have to say that in this case I agree with all of your points. Would love to hear from those that dispute any of them. Seems to me you have summed up the ingrediants to the recipe for a crappy year of soccer.

We'll have to wait and see about next year with Beckham but so far this year he has to share some of the blame for wrecking our season. I don't believe for a minute that was the goal...I really like the guy and believe he genuinely wants to be here (although I'll acknowledge that he may now be second guessing himself). In the end though the circus that surrounds him has done nothing but bring in $$$....it sure hasn't helped our cause as a solid soccer team. The jury is still out whether or not he has helped raise the profile of the league....certainly temporarily....but not sure about the long term yet.

You could say that injuries are out of his control and in a way yes they are....but he played on the injured foot in the Spanish league final match probably making it worse (don't blame him for wanting to do that). He then came here and played in a bunch of games where he shouldn't have been playing (blame the Galaxy, MLS, ESPN, etc. etc. and Beckham for these games). Then....he is forced to start playing on fields with artificial turf. ( I know they laid grass over it but it just can't be the same) I'm sure the NY game didn't help his injury although it certainly helped the NY market for a day. Good long term vision...I'm here for 5 years...we're thinking about the future......yea right.

Additionally our schedule is totally 'effed with a rediculous number of games back to back to parade him around. If he wasn't hurt already there was a good chance he was going to get hurt. The MLS is a more physical league than Spain and you have a bunch of young guys out to prove something. Our team was setup for failure this year and it played out in a reasonable fashion given the circumstances. None of this should come as a surprise.

In hindsight it's easy to second guess....but early on I know many people posted reservations about our teams ability to handle such a difficult schedule when we learned about it. It was more difficult to predict that we would implode in such a spectacular fashion.....but I don't think it is much of a surprise.

I'm quoting this whole post 'cause people should read it twice. Baysider is spot on with this. The difference between the two teams, roster-wise, is DC found two impact players at reasonable salaries in the offseason and we found Nate Jaqua....

The biggest blame I lay at the feet of Yallop and Lalas isn't what's happened during the season, but that we failed to significantly improve our team during the off-season. And then the desperation trades we made during the season when we realized this only made matters worse.

FIRE YALLOP. To me the above is an indication of Frank's delusion in his own abilities to make an excellent team out of mediocrity (as someone else stated in another thread).
And being the genius that I am, I saw that happening during the offseason :)

You make excellent points, but I still believe that most of our players have the skills they need to be successful. Whether they know how to use that skill is another matter entirely. I will agree with you that Lalas and Yallop didn't seem to make the right trades in the offseason to bolster the squad. I guess I just feel bad for the guy (Yallop) and that's why I think he's unjustly crucified right now.

Maybe I'm wrong though. It's been known to happen on more than one occasion... just ask my wife.

Blasphemy heathen! Remind me not to go to your church.

And for those who think Yallop is to blame, please consider past history; Lalas has screwed up EVERY team he's touched... Yallop's won two titles.

May Lalas control the Galaxy for eternity... even better he makes a deal with the devil (AEG), records a record, makes millions and buys the Galaxy from AEG. The only more fitting owner of the Galaxy than AEG, Alexi Lalas.

Forgot to mention that I think the team has indeed recognized this to an extent - with the promotion of Paul Bravo. Now we have someone dedicated to searching out/auditioning talent who can spend the time it takes to find those "diamonds in the rough" like Emilio.

Now, whether Bravo has a good eye for talent or not remains to be seen....
