How would people feel if Francisco Mendoza played for the US? He has represented Mexico at the u-17 level but claims he would play for the US and looks like a very promising talent at only 22 years of age. He gains US citizenship within the next six months and has been great so far for Chivas USA. I mostly want to know if anybody here thinks he has the potential to play for the US Nats.

This has been mentioned before but i thought i would refresh it after seeing his play lately.

I thought that once you represented a country at any national team level, you were bound to them.

If he can play I wouldn't mind seeing him. It would be sweet to shove it at the "Mexico is in your blood" crowd

How can he gain citizenship if he's been here 3 years? I thought it was either 5 or 10 years to become a citizen. He might become a resident

If I'm not mistaken, you're tied at aged 21 or 22 after representing a youth national team.

Did he play for Mexico U-17 in official matches? If so, he is cap-tied, because he was not also eligible to play for the US when he did, and is over the age limit for changing nationalities.

However, if he played only friendlies for Mexico U-17, then he can play for the US.

    1. Under current FIFA rules, he's tied to Mexico if he played in official U-17 matches.
    2. If he were a right wing, I'd be very, very interested in the kid. Since he's a left wing, well, he's a nice player, but he's not as good as Beasley or Convey or even Mapp.

Given that the odds of him becoming a US citizen before he's 30 are pretty slim, I think this is a moot point.

What a bunch of sorry azzes.....Why do we give up so fast ....? Are we admitting our lack of capacity to develop top class soccer players... why?....Hey here is a suggestion..... lets give citizenship to all the Brazilian players that are not in the national team. They can play for US

I don't like naturalizing players JUST for the sake of playing for the National Team.

Mastro,Adu,and Feilhaber are completely different stories though...

If Mendoza really is going to get citizenship in the next six months, then his application has been in the works for quite a while - and if he sincerely wants to represent the United States, I certainly wouldn't be averse to giving him the chance.

Of course, it also represents yet another bit of irony about the Chivas USA organization, in that what started out as an idea for a farm club for Chivas might end up sending a promising young Mexican player to the USMNT (thus keeping him from ever playing for Chivas de Guadalajara due to their Mexican-only policy) first! That, on top of finding success on the field only after dropping the idea of using a primarily Mexican team...
