Latin American Flair Will Boost MLS Popularity

MLS needs not only players from LatinoAmerica to sell a better product on the field. But also to invest in broadcasting primetime in one of those AM chained radio stations in Spanish, at least one hour of a daily show: all MLS related, with interviews and talk show of the games, with info of what is going on in the world. Without mixing with Mexican's league related stories except as a filler. I have heard listener eager to follow MLS more, but most of the time the broadcasters are forced to talk only about Mexican league, because that is their target. It should sell commercials too. Also a national broadcast of the main game of the week in Spanish. The other sports are pushing hard with their games in Spanish, NFL started yesterday and Baseball has been there for a while. If a Hispanic wants to follow them is because they already adjust to the country's taste in sports and most probably follow them anyway that they can and there are plenty of outlets. But MLS is a "convidado de piedra" (somebody you invite to a party but if the guy doesn't show up none cares) everywhere. I understand they bought TV time in the past to improve "the showing", but a cheaper investment as in radio stations broadcasting could have taken MLS further into the conscience of the ones who already love soccer. Now come these new guys, but where are their stories, their expectations, what they find different, how they came to MLS? I want to know. I believe most of everybody would like to know, it is just ESPN and Dave O'Bryan try to tell us in the worst possible time: in the developing of the game. But this is for another time.

How did I know, the INSTANT that I saw the thread title, who wrote the story?

What I don't know, is just how many of the sentences in that story were written within the last five years? Jesus H., you'd think his editor would be sick of reading the same story over and over.

You would also think sports editors would be tired of reading the same anti-soccer diatribes over and over as well, but we know that's not the case either.

    I'm sick of them both.

ha ha. I had a feeling too when I saw the RSS link.

I was rather pleased though with the direction the thread starter pulled this thread rather than follow PG's regurgitation of the week.

I'd really like to have more games available on the radio. Why not even buy some radio time in cities where soccer has a decent following or where MLS is thinking of expanding.

They have been saying that for years. Thats not happening. Perfect example of this is Chivas USA nobody watches this team and people are put of by the fact that they seem to be a second rate version of the original. Their first couple of years they filled their line ups full of mexican players and still NOBODY cared.

You know what most so called "latinos" are doing on saturdays in the US they are most likely watching College Football.

Most people feel that any league would benefit from having better players regardless of their ethnicity/background. Gardner's the only fool who thinks it's paramount that MLS's improvement must come from south of the Rio Grande.

Here's a question: Has Jamie Trecker or Paul Gardner produced more half-assed, retarded columns over the past five years? Now that's a MLS:N&A thread worth reading.

Perhaps. But many are watching their native league. Or the native league of his father. Those are the fans that we need to aim. The same way that we target the anglophile fans that do not watch MLS.

How much flair will each club need? Will the minimum amount of flair, say...6 flair players do? Or will MLS require 6 flair players, but really expect clubs to go all out and express themselves with as many flair players as they can get?

I would much rather have Brits than latins. We should focus on convincing players like Giggs and Fowler to come stateside and forget about Blanco and JPA. Brits are harder working players and are tougher than the latins. There style is more similar to the american soccer style.

I'm just surprised nobody ever thought of this amazing idea before. I'm surprised nobody has apparently discussed this idea since the planning stages for the league started. :)

Hey, watch it. After all, England has beaten Brazil three times in 23 tries. Clearly speaks to the quality of the English game and why DC United has erred in bringing in Brazilians like Luciano and Fred.

that's also a branding problem too. unfortunately, the majority of hispanics in LA aren't big fans of the ORIGINAL in the first place (in fact they're staunch fans of direct competitors). so they're sure as hell not gonna support a cheap knock-off version of a brand they didn't like in the first place.

Chivas USA was an idea based on arrogance, not business. the smart business move would have been to name it LAFC and be done with it.
