On lots of internet discussion forums there are buttons that can be pressed to make it so particular poster's commentary is hidden from your view. So, if there is a poster whom you feel consistently delivers obnoxious or strange comments that you would rather not read, or even spend the time trying to decide if you should read, you can permanently remove them from your sight.

Does BigSoccer have such a feature? If so, please point me to it. If not, can we get it included in a future release? Thanks!

Yes! I was wanting to see Brazil and at times wondered if I wasn't watching Italy!

You are correct, it was an accident. I had "1 Polish" on the list but decided to order them from highest to lowest... in my high tech "cut and paste" method of ordering them, I cut him, but must have forgotten to paste him!

Passion is a wonderful thing. And soccer has such a rich history of passionate fans. However, both soccer fans and Latin people can (and usually do) balance this passion with respect for those around them.

I've already expressed my comments on the original post, but just to be clear - I value both RealSandy's and RSLFM's posts on this board. They both have a great (and varied) perspective on things, and I enjoy reading their posts. The last thing I want to be is preachy (or an arm-chair mod), but I will stand behind my post. Let's move on.

  6. You show your ignorance of latin american soccer fans with this statement. I have seen grown men (professional people) stop their car in the middle of busy intersection to insult a fan of an opposing team. I've seen them break off contact professionally with someone because they disagreed with their opinion.
The rampid violence seen in Argentina this past season bears witness to the fact that there is very little balance with passion and respect in latin america. What latin americans do have is thicker skin. In that sense RSLFM is 100% correct. Too many people on these boards get offended when someone passionately disagrees with them and throws a jab (yes, even a low blow at times). Comparatively speaking RSLFM is pretty mild compared to what she could be. You wouldn't want to unleash that tiger...;)

True. My background is primarily with Romanian and Belgian soccer. Romanian fans are likewise passionate, and have some very clever and crude songs taking jabs at the opposing team (and fans). However, when it is done under the guise of fandom it seems appropriate. Many times they end up sharing a beer together at the local bar. Granted there are fights that breakout, but for the most part these fans show each other a mutual respect.

I assume the violence is a result of fans who are the exception rather than the rule (just like with English or Italian fans), but I may be wrong. It's fair to say that we may all have different perspectives of how we should treat each other, which is why I am willing to move on. I've said my peace.

People acting that way are idiots, IMO.

    It is a game.

    Period.

Paying to watch people play a children's game in children's clothing is all very nice and fun. But: People are dying in wars, starving in the streets, diseases rampaging populations, etc. Soccer is a nice distraction, but it should never distract us from what is actually important. People acting as you describe are idiotically allowing a distraction to get in the way of success in life and benefits they can bring the world. That is pathetic.

Heck, I play bridge with tons of passion and care, but my watch phrase when playing (even when playing against world champions as I have on occasion) is: It is a game, not a career choice (even though some people do make a career out of it).

  9. In the USA, yes. In Latin America it is a distraction from all the corruption and garbage you put up with in every day life. Soccer may be the only successful thing to which you may be associated. Your club is literally your life. So when we get immigrants coming to the US (me, RSLFM and a host of others) you just have to understand that it will take a generation or two to get those passionate feelings down to a level that won't scare/offend most North Americans. Much the same way we must get accustomed to the way some fans are here in the US: fair-weather, semi-commited and statistics-oriented.

In order to understand each other we must see each other as fans who are doing their best to be fans according to their traditions. Sometimes that is a difficult thing to do. But in the immortal words of Rodney King...;)

My ancestoral traditions have some limitations... BUT, ships low on the horizon, shallow keels to allow them to go almost straight to shore, and attacking with the sun behind us made up for most of them.

I highly recommend reading this book:

Also available in a US version, Soccer Against the Enemy. Terrific read, written in a very accessible style. The football version is edited better (when they made the US version, all instances of "football" were changed to "soccer" - even in the US chapter, resulting in an odd reference to an American Soccer Quarterback).

Kuper did what I wish I had fifteen years ago: he traveled on a shoe string budget all over the world to look at how soccer shapes conflict in various countries all over the world. Want a sense of how Holland-Germany matches play out in Amsterdam? Or how organized crime infiltrates club soccer in Ukraine? Rangers-Celtic clashes in Glasgow? Generals and soccer in Argentina? Poverty and soccer in Africa? Slovakia, Brazil, Catalunya (which the US plays next month), and others - each is a self-contained chapter, so it is perfect for picking up and putting back down whenever you get the chance (I hand it out like a proselytizer when I have friends/colleagues set to travel a long distance). Kuper is a journalist, and good at making the material accessible.

Even with a post-9/11 chapter, it is beginning to feel a bit out of date, since many people no longer recognize the players as readily (the old cover had Frank Rijkaard spitting on Rudy Voeller in a 1990 World Cup game, which was a clear reference when I bought the book in 1995, but not so clear now). But at less that $12 on Amazon, it's well worth it.

Speaking of the spitting incident, see about 30 seconds in:

Maybe the people should focus on actually doing something about the corruption, etc. You know, making a positive difference.... <sigh> Not that we do better in the US. We are as distracted by our favorite sports, etc. Silly, in all cases... we are all playing the violin while our respective cities burn.

I knew there had to be a deeper reason why Boca is my favorite Argentine time...

  20. People, mostly college students, tried doing something about the corruption in 1975-1982 and most of them ended up at the bottom of a lake with lead poisoning. Over 30,000 in fact. Just ask the Madres de Mayo about that. It's la mesma merda all over. Thanks for the fun exchange of ideas.

  21. Thanks for the teaser. I just added it to my hint list for Christmas. I look forward to some off-season reading.

There is nothing I like more in life than watching the UNMNT humilitate Mexico and anyone else who can thump the Brazilians (Yeah France! Did it twice in the World Cup!). The US-Brazil game was a decnet game for the US which I thought could have won except for the "Juventus Curse".

What is the "Juventus Curse"? The Juventus Curse or Curse of Juve is the fact that a team is just so good (or believed to be) that the referees will call a game in their favor. The penalty kick call against the US just after the US had tied the game was just too convienent, afterall, everyone knows that Brazil is the best team on the planet, ergo, we can't have the best team on the planet loose to the Americans now can we?

I've seen this before. As you recall, Juve got sent down for match fixing by tampering with the refs. Before that happened, I remember how it seemed like Juve could always seem to get that tieing goal in the last minutes to salvage a tie or win. Most everyone always thought that it was the fact that Juve had all these good players, but now we know it was because the refs were calling the game for them. Brazil reminds me of Juve. They have a team full of good players, so if the refs happen to help them out a bit, nobody will suspect anything. Everyone will just assume it's due to the brazilian players natural ability and not because the ref got paid off to make sure that Brazil wouldn't loose to the US.

Actually, the scoring went as follows:

    Scoring:
USA – Carlos Bocanegra (Landon Donovan) 21st minute.
BRA – Oguchi Onyewu (own goal) 33.
    BRA – Lucio (Ronaldinho) 53.
USA – Clint Dempsey (Steve Cherundolo) 73
    BRA – Ronaldinho (unassisted) 75
BRA – Elano (penalty kick) 92+

You can clearly see that Ronaldinho had the go ahead goal in the 75th from a gorgeous free kick at the top of the box. The PK was called in the stoppage.

Brazil simply outplayed the USMNT. It's really not any more complicated than that.

    Fixed your post.

Remember, whenever you play Brazil, you are fighting the Curse of Juve.
