The Red Bulls magic number for the Ply Off is a combination of five (5), with 7 games to go.... ¿Can we make it?
Re: The Countdown Considering that the Rapids, Wizards and Crew all have to leapfrog the Red Bulls to push us out of the playoffs, I think we're safe.
Re: The Countdown At this writing the magic number is not 5, it is 14. Here's how it is computed: Colorado and Columbus, who are fighting for the 8th spot, each have 28 points with 7 games to play. If they each win all the rest of their games, they will each have 49 points. (7*3=21, 21+28=49). So as of right now, we need 50 to clinch. We have 36. 50-36=14. Unless, you mean that the magic number is 5 GAMES, not 5 points, in which case the statement is accurate.
Re: The Countdown We make points but we play games and to make 14 points we need 5 games at least, that's why the magic number is 5 games...
Re: The Countdown We don't necessarily need 5 games, we need a number of NY wins and Columbus losses that total 5 games. That's why unless Columbus wins out (very little chance) or NY goes winless (very little chance), we're in the playoffs. I'm more concerned with trying to grab the top two seeds, which is now unlikely after our losses to DC and NE. Plus it would've been nice to grab fifth in the East and sneak into a weak West bracket (except for Houston), but unless Columbus outdoes Colorado on points we're better off just trying to qualify outright instead of positioning ourselves to pick our competition.
Re: The Countdown There are a few flaws with this magic number theory. The first being that based on the explanation above, KC has a magic number of 17. But they have only 6 games left and play Columbus next. So, if they don't win, they can't possibly make their magic number, and so Columbus would pass them by. This means that Columbus would be 7th, not 8th.
Re: The Countdown I don't see a flaw here. You're absolutely right, if KC loses to Columbus and the Crew and Rapids win out they make the playoffs since they both have a game in hand. The magic number is a combination of the points you earn and the points the other team drops. Even if they lose to Columbus, Columbus could lose or tie a game somewhere else and the magic number would continue to go down.
Re: The Countdown I cant say i like they state of mind i see from you guys, we should be thinking of how many times the Scums need to slip up so we can catch them and secure our place , not how to stay ahead of Columbus. Think positive , think with a mind of victory its this kind of attitude that kills us every season . If there is a curse on us the fans did it. With the second class mentality
Re: The Countdown It is true that Colorado and Columbus have seventh (7) games left, and true that KC have only six (6), but, KC have five (5) points more than Colorado & Columbus and this two team will need to spend two games of that seventh (7) and win them to level the score with KC, and just like that, if they win this two games will live them with only five (5) left, compared to Kansas that will have six (6), which make the Wizards # 7
Re: The Countdown ¿Positive?, positive is that: DC is six (6) points ahead of us, with eight (8) games to go against our seventh (7) to go and they are playing a better football than us and this year the only chance to catch them will be in the play off, because the season is over.... finito, caput... the only we can say is: ...sayonara, ...Until the next year....
Re: The Countdown Dude, I hear you, but remember that DC (1 - 3 - 1, 4 pts) was sucking while we were flying (3 - 0 - 2, 11 pts) back in the beginning of the year. That's a 7 point difference in just 5 games, and it's not fantasy (it happened.) Just because a team is playing great now is no guarentee of future success.
Re: The Countdown My sentiments exactly , think of how many times they should slip and the slide by them , thats my way of think the crew is not in our class we should not be competing with them we should be looking to get back to the top like we were . its not impossible as some may think all it takes is one mistake
Re: The Countdown Oh...Miracles happens is not a discussion in there, 1969 The Mets, Nicks and the Jets, everything is possible, but not provable or positive....
Re: The Countdown I am with Kwandino! The Bulls are still within striking distance of one of the top two spots in the Eastern Conference and given that we are playing NE again and only behind them by 6 points or two games anything is possible.. The true test will be the upcoming road trip to Chivas and Chicago...if we win both those games we will be in excellent shape to not only be in the playoffs but also compete for the top two Superliga spots... I am an optimist but I am a realist too... the two wins on this road trip will not be easy...Chivas has looked great of late (and are poised to win the Western Conference as a result) and Chica needs a win bad to keep their playoff hopes alive and they always play us tough at home... However, that was before Angel was w/ us!
Re: The Countdown I agree with both viewpoints, but this is a marathon, not a sprint. I think the agenda should be prioritized as follows: 1. Qualify for the playoffs; anything can happen. 2. Qualify for the playoffs; anything can happen. 3. Qualify for the playoffs; anything can happen. 4. Once a playoff spot is secured, climb as high in the standings as you can before the playoffs begin. 5. Beat your first-round opponent. The rest follows logically, but the bulls are not the type of team that can take anything for granted. They need to take as many points in the next few games as they can and assure themselves of a spot, at which point Bruce can be more liberal in his player-rotations, resting guys who've played lotsa minutes or who have minor injuries. If we can leapfrog one of the teams we're chasing, all the better, but you'll have to go through at least one or two of them in the playoffs anyway, so what seed RBNY gets is a little less important. I'd love to see a top-two seed heading in, but it's less important than getting in ASAP so that you get everybody healed up and rested. A #1 seed is worthless if you burn out three players getting there.
Re: The Countdown we're in the playoffs don't worry. But winning a playoff series...wow remember that feeling???? I WANT THAT FEELING AGAIN
Re: The Countdown We are in the playoffs. There is really no drama here. Last night loss shows us we are in no way contenders for anything else, SO Time to focus on getting ready for the post season. Manage the season, get some rest, get healthy and ready ourselves for the post season.
Re: The Countdown I'd like for this team to do a little bit more than that. Worst case scenario is we win the fourth seed in the East bracket, and that means playing DC at RFK in the second leg. I'd rather take on New England in the home-and-home and play DC in the conference championship. If it's one game anything goes, and perhaps KC eliminates them first.
Re: The Countdown I aint afraid of no stinkin' DC! But, I'd like us to kick as much ass as possible (mostly because I'm tired of Devil500 yelling "Fire Bruce" with every loss. )
Re: The (playoff race) Countdown I was hoping for a Superliga spot (top four overall) but Sunday really put us behind the 8-ball now. That was our chance to jump Chivas and really be in it. Obviously we are still close and have a relatively good schedule to finish up, but taking out Chivas would have done alot. Right now we are: GP PTS 1 DC United (E1) 24 46 2 Houston Dynamo (W1) 25 42 3 NE Revolution (E2) 24 42 4 Chivas USA (W2) 22 40 5 FC Dallas 23 39 6 Red Bull NY 23 36 If we have to bump one team out, it might end up being Houston seeing as we have 2 games in hand on them.
Re: The (playoff race) Countdown Chivas in the Superliga will be fun. I thought it was top four overall though considering the results of the playoffs (MLS Cup)?
Re: The (playoff race) Countdown I believe it's top 4 at the end of the regular season, overall standings (regardless of conference)
