It's too bad that most people in the US won't have much of a reasonable opportunity see many of these games.

Germany was by far the best team last time and well deserved champions. I remember watching US x Germany in an elimination game and hearing one of the announcers say that he wasn't sure if the Germans had enough fighting spirit to hang on against the US team. Ahem. Not enough fighting spirit? The Germans. Franz Beckenbauer played with a broken arm in the 1970 World Cup. Obviously, that's a different event, but c'mon. The Germans.

Anderson, have a question for you. When the US Women played Brazil, I noticed that the Brazilian Team had the 5 Stars above the Federation Crest. Any idea why? I know the German Womens Team only wears the one star for the Title they won instead of including the mens team as well.

That's weird. I know that this year the US Women have the two stars for their wins on the back of the jersey.

It's just a different policy than the one Germany uses.

My understanding is that all teams that represent the CBF (the Brazilian soccer federation) wear the five stars because they're part of the CBF crest. The women's teams and the men's youth teams wear the stars because they're CBF teams and wear the CBF crest.

I actually checked this on the DFB site, and the Womens Team wore the Three Stars on the jersey at the last World Cup. So their policy might have been similar until they won one. Now it appears they wear only the number of stars that they won for themselves. Interesting if the Mens and Womens titles were added to the mix as an overall Federation thing.

Of course England would still suck, as some things don't change no matter what Gender is playing. :D

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the CBF reevaluates the policy once the women win a WWC. At this point, I'm just glad that the CBF honchos could be bothered to notice that there's another WWC going on and got around to assembling a team.

I think ESPN's going to reshow the USA game later in the day as well.

I just set my alarm for 4:50am, that is exactly 4 hours and 17 minutes away. I figure we will get up 3 nil in the first half and then I can go sleep another hour.

I'll probably watch the game when I get home tomorrow from work. Remember to keep all comments about the WWC in this thread so as not to spoil it for others.

We are still playing poorly, North Korea's possession is worrying me.

Full time. 2-2. The US should feel very fortunate. They still need to play Sweeden, who is a better team.

Man, that Korean Men's team played like their lives depended on it. (And it probably did.) Not sure how many Kum Suk or Un Suk Jersey's will be sold here, but they may have found a market in the PRK.

Seriouxly, this is going to be a tough group. US Team looked nervous almost the entire match.

    Some pretty exciting draws today.

U.S.A 2-2 North Korea: North Korea scores both goals while the U.S. is playing a "man" down but the U.S. comes back to tie.

England 2-2 Japan: Japan takes the early 2nd half lead, England scores two in 3 minutes to take the lead back but Japan gets a late goal to earn the draw.

Nigeria 1-1 Sweden, Nigeria also scores late to get the draw.

    Group A
    Germany 3 pts
    Japan 1
    England 1
    Argentina 0

    Group B
    North Korea 1 pt
    U.S.A. 1
    Sweden 1
    Nigeria 1

Groups C and D start tomorrow morning.

In addition to the replays on TV mentioned above, you may also want to check www.espn360.com - check for a replays of WWC games.

It's free, but your internet service provider has to have an agreement with ESPN to carry it.

(Also, whenever there's an MLS game on ESPN2 that follows a college football game or WNBA game or whatver that runs late, check espn360.com - they should have the start of the MLS game even if the ESPN2 network is still showing the end of the previous event.)
